You are watching Let's Talk in English.
We are here in the LTE TV studio.
And we are ready for a great day.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your teachers here.
Our topic for today is still SEASONS.
And our lesson is called Winter Is Here!
Winter Is Here!
What do you do in the winter, Katie?
Well, when it is winter, I really like to play outside.
I like it when it's cold out and I really like snow.
There's a lot of fun things you can do when there is snow outside.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson today.
So let's get started.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Mark went skiing last weekend.
It was very exciting.
He went with church friends.
Some skied. Some snowboarded.
Ken likes to ski, but he really likes to ice skate.
He skates at the indoor rink at the park.
If it isn't snowing, he skates outside on the pond.
But Susie likes to build a snowman!
OK! Well, let's learn all about this in Conversation A.
(Music).
Good morning, Mark.
Good morning, Ken.
Good morning, Susie.
Mark, why are you walking like that?
Are you OK?
I'm OK. I'm just a little sore.
Why are you sore?
I went to Eagle Mountain last weekend to ski.
Was this your first time to ski?
Yes.
Then you must be really sore!
I think the first thing we need to talk about today is our "Use It!" sentence.
I went to Eagle Mountain last weekend to ski.
I went somewhere to do something.
I went to the restaurant to eat.
I went to Asia to teach English.
I went to the mall to buy clothes.
And I went to school to learn a lot of important things.
Thanks, Katie.
Now Mark is sore. That means his body hurts.
And he's sore because he skied at Eagle Mountain.
And there is a key word in that sentence.
ski.
ski.
When you ski, you go down a mountain on things also called skis.
That's right. Skiing is fun. It's a good thing to do in the winter.
And you can ski in the mountains.
Have you ever skied before, Nathan?
No. I have never skied, but I would like to try sometime.
But skiing I hear can make you very sore.
It works your whole body a lot.
That's right. Skiing is harder than it looks.
Now Ken asks, "Was this your first time to ski?" Was this your first time to do
something?
Let's try another one.
Was this your first time to go to America?
Was this your first time to ride a horse?
Well, this is a great sentence to know, so try to practice that.
Now, friends, let's take a look at Conversation B.
(Music).
Did you like skiing?
Yes, I did. Skiing was exciting!
But it was hard, too.
But you tried something new. That's great!
Who did you go with?
I went with some church friends.
Did everyone ski?
No. Some people skied. Some people snowboarded.
But everyone drank hot chocolate!
And everyone had a great time!
We did!
Mark likes skiing.
He says skiing was exciting.
And that is a key word.
Let's learn about it.
exciting.
exciting.
If something is exciting, it is really, really fun or good.
Sometimes things that we do are exciting and that means that it's a lot of fun.
Yes. If something is exciting, you really like it.
I think that traveling is exciting.
And I think going to new places is exciting.
Flying in airplanes is exciting, too.
Katie, what do you think is exciting?
Well, I think that trying new foods is exciting.
And learning new things is really exciting, too!
But sometimes movies can be exciting.
The story of the movie is exciting.
And Mark thinks that skiing is exciting.
But it's very hard, too.
I think something else is exciting, too.
Snowboarding.
Snowboarding is like skiing, and you go down the mountain.
Have you ever gone snowboarding, Katie?
No, I haven't.
When you go snowboarding, you only have one thing to stand on instead of two
skis.
So it's a little bit harder than skiing.
But it sounds like the ski trip was exciting.
Both skiing and snowboarding are exciting sports.
That's right.
And we have some exciting news for you.
It's time to learn some more about these things in Conversation C.
Do you ski, Ken?
I do. But I like to ice skate more!
That sounds fun. Where do you skate?
I skate at the park.
There's an indoor rink there.
But if it isn't snowing, I skate outside on the pond.
What about you, Susie? Do you ski or skate?
I can. But I'd rather build a snowman!
Well, I agree with Ken.
It's fun to ice skate.
That is a key word, too.
skate.
skate.
When you skate, you ride on the ground with special shoes.
Yeah. You can ice skate, so that means that you have special shoes to move on
the ice.
It's a lot of fun. But you have to be careful.
It's easy to fall down when you ice skate.
Have you ever been ice skating, Nathan?
Yes, I have been ice skating.
And I have fallen down when I have been ice skating, too.
But when I went ice skating, I was always inside.
You can go ice skating outside, too.
Have you ever tried that, Katie?
Yes. I have been ice skating outside one time back in America and it was a lot
of fun.
It's a lot colder to skate outside than it is to skate inside.
So if the water in a pond is made out of ice, you can go ice skating outside.
But you can go skating other places, too.
That's right. You can also skate outside.
You don't always have to ice skate.
When I say that, I mean that you can skate on the sidewalk or the street.
You just need a different kind of shoes and those are called skates.
Mmhm. You can skate in some sports like hockey - that would be on the ice.
And Ken skates at the park at an indoor rink.
Now a rink is a place where you can ice skate inside.
But if it isn't snowing, he can also skate at the pond.
And Nathan, that is our next key word.
Yes, it is. Thank you, Katie.
This key word is...
snow.
snow.
When it snows, snow falls from the sky.
Now we talked about this word yesterday.
But it's such a great key word that we're going to talk about it again today.
That's right.
Like we said yesterday, the word "snow" can be both a noun and a verb.
Snow is what comes from the sky.
It's white and very cold.
But when snow falls from the sky, we say that it is snowing outside.
When it snows, it is really cold.
And if it's snowing outside, you have to be careful when you go outside.
If it snows too much, you should stay inside.
The roads and the sidewalks can be very slippery when it snows, so it is easy to
fall.
Now sometimes when it snows too much, we say that there is a snowstorm outside.
And if that happens, you say that you have been snowed in.
That's right, snowed in.
If you get snowed in, you can't even go outside if you try.
There's too much snow, so you have to stay inside.
So even though snow causes a lot of problems, I really love the snow.
I think there are so many fun things to do when it snows outside.
Like we've learned, you can go skating and you can go skiing.
Or my favorite, you can stay inside and drink some hot tea to keep you warm.
Or you can also build a snowman.
And that is our next key word.
snowman.
snowman.
A snowman is something that you make out of snow.
It's a person made out of snow.
That's right. Snowmen are fun to make and it's easy, too.
You just have to roll three big balls out of snow, put them on top of each other
and then put a face on your snowman.
It's a great time.
Mmhm. Susie likes building snowmen, too!
She says she'd rather build a snowman.
If you say you would rather do something, that means you want to do it more than
something else.
That's right. So let's use this.
I would rather read a book than study for school.
So I don't want to study.
Or I'd rather sleep than play a sport.
I would rather practice key words with you than finish the show.
So let's do that now.
Here is today's first key word.
exciting.
exciting.
Was the concert exciting?
ski.
ski.
I love to ski in the winter.
skate.
skate.
Kate skates on the pond near her house.
snow.
snow.
It snowed last night!
snowman.
snowman.
Did it snow? I want to make a snowman!
All right, friends, those are all of today's key words.
Make sure that you practice them on your own.
They're great words to know when you want to talk about the weather.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But don't worry, Nathan and I will be right here afterthat.
