You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a new week here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're ready to learn.
Today our topic is SEASONS.
And we have a new lesson for you called Winter Is Here!
Winter Is Here!
Do you like winter, Nathan?
I do like winter.
I enjoy the cool weather, but sometimes especially in the United States it gets
too cold.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
It's great to be here with you.
Now it's time to find your Let's Begin reading in your LTE magazine.
Katie can read it with you now.
Let's begin!
Winter is here!
The weather outside is freezing!
There is snow on the ground.
It is slippery.
Rob has boots. They keep his feet dry.
He also has a new coat!
He has a hat and gloves, too.
The gloves keep his hands warm.
He can also buy a scarf.
That sounds a little bit too cold to me.
But there are lots of good words to learn.
Let's start with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Ken. I'm sorry.
I'm really late this morning.
That's OK, Rob.
The weather is bad today.
Many people are late for work today.
The weather is so cold!
It's freezing outside!
And there is so much snow!
I know. The ground is really slippery, too.
I almost fell this morning!
Let's practice our "Use It!" sentence.
I'm really late this morning.
I'm really something this morning.
I'm really happy this morning.
I'm really excited this morning.
Do you have a sentence, Nathan?
Uh, well, you can use other times, too, like this:
I'm really tired this afternoon.
I'm really mad tonight.
You can use this sentence lots of different ways.
Use it today, friends.
Now let's keep learning together.
Rob was late.
Lots of people were late today.
And they're late because it's freezing outside.
And that is a key word.
freezing.
freezing.
If it's freezing outside, it's really, really cold.
If it's freezing, you probably need to wear a coat.
It will keep you warm.
If it's freezing outside, the weather might be bad.
It could be windy and rainy.
So if it's freezing, you should probably just stay inside.
That is important.
But we can use this word to talk about other things than the weather.
You can say it's freezing inside if it's really cold inside your house or your
classroom.
Do you know what happens when it's freezing outside?
It might snow.
Oh, and that is a great key word.
I love this key word.
snow.
snow.
Snow is a kind of weather.
It comes from the sky and it's white.
It doesn't snow very much in some places, but it snows a lot in other places
around the world.
It usually snows in places where there are mountains.
It's usually freezing in the mountains in the winter.
But wait a minute.
We're using this word as a noun and a verb.
Snow can be both.
It snows outside, but it's called snow.
You can say there's a lot of snow outside.
But you can also say it's snowing a lot outside.
You can say it both ways.
But there's a lot of things that happen when it snows outside.
That's right.
It's freezing outside and then the ground gets slippery.
Slippery.
Now that is a good word to know.
Yes, it is. If the ground is slippery, that means it's easy for you to slip.
And if you slip, you usually fall down.
Yes, that has happened to me before.
I've fallen down when it has been slippery outside.
And it can also get slippery outside when it rains a lot.
Well, right now, friends, we need to move on to Conversation B, where there is
more to learn.
(Music).
Be careful! Don't fall.
You can break something.
I know. I'm very careful!
Are your boots warm?
Yes. They're great.
They keep my feet warm and dry.
Good. You're wearing warm clothes, too.
That's important.
I know. I have a new winter coat.
See?
It's nice!
It keeps me very warm.
You need a lot of things when it's freezing outside.
It's important to have the right clothes.
Lucky for you, Katie and I are here to help you with this.
That's right.
We have some clothes for cold weather here.
And the first thing that you need are boots.
That is a key word.
boot.
boot.
A boot is a big shoe you wear on your feet.
Boots keep your feet warm.
Yes, boots are great for cold weather.
And boots can help you walk on the slippery ground.
They keep your feet dry, too, so your feet don't get wet.
And you can wear rain boots if it is raining.
Or you can wear winter boots in the snow.
Boots are the best shoe to wear when it snows outside.
So if it's freezing and snowing outside, get some boots.
But you should also get a coat.
That's another key word for today.
coat.
coat.
A coat is like a jacket, but it is longer.
You put both of them over your clothes.
Coats are great. You need a coat in the winter.
Coats will keep you really warm.
And it's important to have a coat on if it is snowing outside.
So if it's snowing outside, get a coat, friends.
You will need one of those, too.
Now let's look at some other things in this conversation together.
At the beginning of the conversation, Ken says, "Don't fall.
You can break something." Now if you fall and break something,
it means that you could break a bone in your body.
Nathan, have you ever broken something?
I have broken something, but it was not because the ground was slippery.
When I was little, I fell from a high bed and broke this bone right here.
I woke up in the morning and it hurt a lot.
Now at the end of today's conversation, Rob says his coat keeps him very warm.
When he uses the word "keep," he means that the coat will make him warm.
He won't get cold. So it will keep him warm.
So remember these words that we have learned in Conversation B.
Remember your boots and your coat, especially if you visit a cold, freezing
place.
But now it's time for us to move on to Conversation C.
We'll be right back.
Don't forget your head and hands.
Wear a hat and gloves, too.
I know, I know. I have them.
I can buy a scarf for my neck, too.
That's a good idea.
We have 15 minutes before the show.
Let's go to the Jungle Cafe.
Sure. I can get some iced coffee!
I'm hot in all these clothes!
Ha...
(Music).
In the winter, it's important to wear the right clothes.
We have learned all about that today.
So we learned how to protect our feet and our bodies.
But what else do you need in the winter, Nathan?
Well, Katie, you also need to protect your head and your hands.
You should wear a hat like this and gloves like yours.
Yes. I am wearing gloves.
We will learn about that later.
Right now let's learn about our key word.
hand.
hand.
This is your hand.
Most people have two hands.
We have two hands and we have two feet.
And we use our hands to do a lot of things.
You use your hands to write.
You use your hands to play sports and to play video games, too.
So how do you protect your hands in the winter?
You wear gloves.
Gloves are important and they keep your hands very warm.
But there's even more things you can do when it's cold outside.
You can use a scarf for your neck, too.
Yeah. Scarves are great. I love them.
And friends, one scarf is spelled S-C-A-R-F, but two or more scarves is spelled
S-C-A-R-V-E-S.
One scarf, many scarves.
Well, that's everything we need to talk about for today.
It's time to review key words now.
Here is the first key word.
freezing.
freezing.
The weather is freezing outside!
snow.
snow.
The snow is white.
boot.
boot.
I wear boots in the snow.
coat.
coat.
This coat is too small.
hand.
hand.
I have two hands.
OK, friends, those were all of the key words for today.
We hope that you remembered them and said them with us.
They are some great words to know.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But don't worry, we will be right back afterthat.
