Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
Today we are in the LTE TV studio to learn together with you.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you today, too.
We want to continue our topic called ENTERTAINMENT.
But the title of today's new lesson is called More Ways to Watch Movies.
More Ways to Watch Movies.
Katie, how do you usually watch movies?
Well, I don't go to the movie theater very often, so I usually watch movies on
my laptop with a DVD.
That is a great way to watch a movie.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And it's great to be here with you today.
We have a lot of great things to learn and I think that you will enjoy this
lesson.
OK. So let's go right now to Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
You know, I love watching movies. Do you?
Well, my guest today is an expert on watching movies.
Please help me welcome Ms. Mindi Movie.
Welcome to the show, Mindi Movie!
Thanks, Rob!
There are more and more ways to watch movies at home.
So are movie theaters becoming less popular?
Not at all, Rob!
Theaters are still crowded.
But you're right, watching movies at home is now easier than ever!
Many people pay low monthly fees to online movie sites.
Yes, you just click and your movie starts in minutes!
Rob asks Mindi a great question.
It's a "Use It!" sentence.
Are movie theaters becoming less popular?
Are (blank) becoming less (blank)?
Are restaurants becoming less cheap?
Are movies becoming less interesting?
Are classes becoming less fun?
What questions can you think of, friends?
Katie, what do you think about Rob's question?
Well, I agree with Mindi.
Many people still see movies in theaters.
But many people also pay a low price every month to watch movies online.
Hmm, so maybe people are just watching more movies.
Now let's look at our first key word.
low.
low.
If something is low, there is not much of it.
A low price is not much money.
So a low price is like a cheap price.
Low can be used about other things, too.
If you're driving a car, your gas might be low.
Good example.
You don't have much gas, so you can say your gas is low.
You can often say something is low.
You can also say that you are low on something.
That's right.
We're low on food. We don't have much food.
Or they are low on people. They don't have many people.
But today we're talking about low monthly fees.
Let's talk about that key word.
monthly.
monthly.
If something is monthly, it happens every month.
A monthly fee is money you have to pay every month.
Most people pay monthly rent for their house.
And we have a monthly birthday party at work.
Yep. That's a lot of fun.
And I take a monthly trip to see my family.
I don't live very close to them.
So I see them once a month.
And this is our monthly ENTERTAINMENT lesson on Let's Talk in English.
Now let's continue with Conversation B.
(Music).
That sounds easy.
Yes! People also watch movies at home through their cable companies.
Are you talking about MOD -- movies on demand?
Yes. After you choose a movie, your cable company adds the cost to your bill.
So do people still rent DVDs?
Yes, but there are fewer places that rent DVDs now.
But people still buy DVDs.
That's another way to watch movies at home!
Some ways to watch movies are old, like watching movies through cable.
Now there are two key words there to look at.
So let's look at the first one.
cable.
cable.
Cable is what puts movies and TV shows on your TV.
You can choose a cable company to watch channels (Chinese) on your TV.
Different companies will let you have different channels.
But you have to pay for cable every month.
It's not free.
People have watched movies through cable for many years now.
Now let's look at the next key word.
through.
through.
If you do A through B, you use B.
Mmhm. So you can watch movies by using cable.
And there are a few ways to buy music today.
You might buy music through the Internet.
You use the Internet to buy MP3s.
But we often say that we go through things.
That's a little different.
It means you go in and out of something.
I go through the park on my way home.
I went into the park to go home.
I drive through the mountains to visit my family.
I go in one side of the mountains and then I go out the other side.
But let's go back to movies now.
You can also watch movies through MOD.
That means movies on demand.
If something is on demand, you can get it when you want it.
And you can watch a new movie just by choosing it on TV.
It's like renting a movie on your TV.
Money for the movie will be added to your bill.
It is quick and easy on demand.
That's right.
Now let's look at another key word.
add.
add.
You add things when you put them together.
I always think of math when I hear the word "add." You can add numbers.
You put two numbers together and you get a new number.
Now if you add 2 and 2, you get 4.
This also works for money.
You can add money together.
The cable company adds MOD prices to your monthly bill, too.
And then you will get a new cost for the month.
Now I think it's time to look at our last key word.
cost.
cost.
Cost is how much money you pay for something.
When you are in college, you have to pay a cost to your school.
You have to pay a cost to rent your house, too.
And if you pay money for something, it can be called a cost.
It's also good to know that cost can be a verb.
"How much does it cost?" is a very common question.
It means: How much money do I need to pay for it?
Like: How much does it cost to rent a movie?
You can answer, "It costs a dollar or two.".
But it doesn't cost anything to watch Read It!
So let's go there now.
(Music).
You're thinking about watching a movie.
But you don't want to go rent a movie or go to a theater.
No problem! Watch one at home!
If you're a member of an online movie site, it's easy.
Click on a movie and it will play on your computer!
The monthly fees for movie sites are low.
You can also get movies through your cable company.
You can choose a movie on demand.
Your company will add the cost to your bill.
Read It starts by saying, "You're thinking about watching a movie." But that's
not true.
I'm not thinking about movies, Nathan.
How does Read It know what I'm thinking?
Oh. It's... it's OK, Katie. Read It doesn't know what you're thinking.
This is just a way to make us feel like we are part of the lesson.
So it's saying what if you wanted to watch a movie, but you don't want to leave
home, either.
Right?
That is right. You got it.
But now if you are thinking about watching a movie, it means you aren't sure if
you want to watch one or not.
You haven't decided yet.
Like, I'm thinking about getting something to eat.
I'm not sure if I will get anything yet, and I probably don't know where I will
go.
Well, there are a few different ways to watch movies, but we already talked
about those things.
Now we need to review our key words, right, Katie?
That's right, so let's do that now.
Here is the first key word.
monthly.
monthly.
How much is your monthly cellphone bill?
low.
low.
The price of these shoes is really low!
through.
through.
I got my ticket through a travel agent.
cable.
cable.
We have many cable channels on our TV.
add.
add.
Please add these numbers together.
cost.
cost.
What is the cost to rent this car?
OK, try to practice these key words with a friend so that you know how to use
them, and so that you remember them.
Right now it's time for us to take a break.
But please come back for the rest of the show.
