Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we learn English and we have fun together.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us for the show today.
Our topic is still LIFE.
But we have a new lesson and the title is Change Those Bad Habits.
Change Those Bad Habits.
Nathan, how do you change bad habits?
Well, when I want to change a bad habit, I try to stay away from the thing that
makes me start my bad habit.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
And I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
OK. Well, I think that today we will learn a lot about how to change a bad
habit.
It will be very interesting.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you have any bad habits?
What are some ways that we can break our bad habits and make good ones?
Well, here to give us some tips is my special guest, Dr. Hans Habit.
Welcome to the program, Dr. Habit.
Thank you, Rob. I'm glad to be here.
We all have habits we want to break.
How can we do that?
Well, first decide the habit you want to break.
Write it down.
And then?
Ask your friends to help you break the habit.
Try to find someone who wants to break the same habit.
Then you have a partner to work with.
It's so important to talk about habits.
Everyone has habits, so it's a good thing to learn about them.
And that is why we have Dr. Habit in the studio today.
Mark wants to break his bad habit.
That means he wants to stop it. He wants to stop snacking.
And there are some things that you have to do to break your habits.
First you have to decide the habit you want to break.
And there is a key word.
So, friends, let's learn about this word together.
decide.
decide.
If you decide to do or stop doing something, you think and say, "I will stop
doing this.".
And that's called making a decision.
Decide and decision are words that are close to each other.
So when you decide you will do something, you make a decision.
That's right. The decision is a noun.
But deciding to do something is a verb.
Now it's very important to decide things.
And we decide on lots of other things.
You decide what you want to eat every day.
You decide where you want to go for vacation.
And you decide what to study when you are in school.
Those are great ways to use the word decide.
Now let's look at today's "Use It!" sentence.
Try to find someone who wants to break the same habit.
OK, let's use it.
Find someone who likes the same movies.
Find someone who goes to the same school.
Find someone who plays the same games.
Now, friends, let's keep learning.
If you find someone who can help you, then you have a partner to work with.
And that is our next key word.
partner.
partner.
A partner is someone who helps you to do something.
That's right.
In school, you may have a partner to help you do your work.
And at your job, you may have a partner who helps you do your work.
Yes. Partners help you with things.
You work with partners. That is very important to know.
Guess what? Katie and I are teaching partners because we teach you together.
But now we need to learn some more things in Conversation B.
We'll be right back.
(Music).
Next, find something you can do instead of the habit.
For example?
Maybe you don't want to smoke anymore.
When you want to smoke, do something else.
Like have coffee with a friend or go for a walk?
That's right.
What other tips do you have?
Be patient with yourself.
You did not form your habit in one day.
Don't expect to break it in one day, either!
We have a lot of good key words in this conversation.
So let's look at them together.
Dr. Habit gives us some great tips today.
One is to be patient with yourself. And that is a key word.
patient.
patient.
If you are patient, you can wait well.
That's right. It's important to be patient in life.
Sometimes we have to wait for things to happen.
When you go to a restaurant, you may have to wait to get a table.
So you should be patient when you are waiting.
Right. Being not patient, or we usually say "impatient," won't make things
happen faster.
Being patient is a very good thing to be.
And Dr. Habit tells you to be patient with yourself.
That means you should not try to make yourself change the habit so fast.
Be patient with yourself because it will take some time.
Now if you are patient, sometimes we say that you have patience.
That's a noun. P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E.
You can use that word, too.
But right now let's look at another key word.
form.
form.
If you form something, you make it.
We form habits. We make them or we can say that we start them.
Now Dr. Habit said you did not form your habit in one day.
It took a lot of time to form your habit.
It takes a lot of time to make a good or bad habit.
Maybe many weeks, many months or even many years.
And that's why it takes a lot of time to break a habit.
Forming habits takes a lot of time, and that's also why we have to be patient.
You have to wait some time to change a habit.
Dr. Habit also says you can't expect to break it in one day.
And there is another key word, Nathan.
Thank you, Katie.
Let's learn about this one, too.
expect.
expect.
If you expect something, you think or you believe that it will happen.
If you have a friend over to your house, you expect them to arrive at some time.
You may also expect things to happen.
You may expect the weather to be good or bad.
Or if you study a lot, you expect that you will do well in school.
You think that it will happen.
Dr. Habit had some great ideas for us, friends.
Now, Katie, have you ever tried to stop a bad habit yourself?
Well, yes. I used to snack a lot, too.
So any time I was hungry but I knew I should not eat a snack, I would do
something different instead.
I would go for a run or read a book, and that way I didn't snack anymore.
Well, that doesn't sound easy, but it is a great idea.
Now, friends, you've been so patient with us.
It's time to go to today's Read It now.
You can break a bad habit.
First, decide which habit you want to break.
If possible, find a partner who wants to change the same habit.
Then you can help each other.
Next, find another activity to do instead of the habit.
For example, if you want to smoke, have coffee with a friend or go for a walk.
And be patient with yourself.
You did not form your habit in one day.
So don't expect to break it in one day, either.
First, let's look at an important phrase.
Break a habit.
When you break a habit, you stop doing it.
You usually break bad habits, not good habits.
That's right.
Good habits you should keep doing. Bad habits you should try to break.
You should stop doing bad habits.
Another thing we learn is to find another activity to do instead of the habit.
Find something different to do.
If you read books instead of watching TV, you won't spend too much time watching
TV.
That will help you break that habit.
And that's good.
The phrase "instead of" is also important to know.
It means you do one thing but not the other thing.
That's right.
So we learn today that there are a lot of things to do to break bad habits.
I think we can all take Dr. Habit's advice.
Yes, that's true. We all have habits.
We have good ones and bad ones, but you can break the bad ones.
And now we can review our key words.
Let's do that together.
Here is your first key word.
decide.
decide.
What should I eat? I can't decide.
partner.
partner.
Work with a partner. Help each other.
patient.
patient.
Please be patient. I don't work fast.
form.
form.
When did you form that habit?
expect.
expect.
Carrie expects to get a good grade.
OK, friends, those were all of today's key words.
We hope that you remembered them and said them with us.
They will help you a lot.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we will be right back afterthat.
