Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
Today let's learn some English together.
We are glad that you're here with us.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Now today's topic is still LIFE.
And we have the same lesson today, too. It's called Bad Habits.
Bad Habits.
So, Katie, do you have any bad habits?
Well, like I said yesterday, one of my bad habits is staying up too late.
But sometimes I also snack.
That's a bad habit, too.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm so glad that you joined us today.
It's time to get ready for today's lesson.
So take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
Nathan will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Mark is snacking again.
He eats several bags of potato chips each day.
Snacking is not a very bad habit.
There are worse ones.
Mark could smoke or be late.
But he should stop snacking or he will gain weight.
Susie suggests some good habits to Mark.
Well, friends, I think that we will learn a lot today about bad habits and good
habits.
So let's get started right now with Conversation A.
(Music).
Mark, are you snacking again?
Who, me?
Yes, you. I see those potato chips.
Susie, this is my first bag today.
Will it be your only bag today?
Uh... maybe.
You want to stop snacking.
You asked me to help you.
I know. Snacking can be a bad habit.
It is for me.
And habits aren't easy to change.
Conversation A starts with a question.
Susie asks, "Mark, are you snacking again?" Now there is a key word.
snack.
snack.
When you snack, you eat food between your meals.
That's right. It's OK to snack a little bit.
But if you snack a lot, you might not be able to eat your lunch or dinner.
So don't snack too much.
That's right. Now when you snack, you usually eat things like cookies or candy
or chips.
And you don't eat food that you should eat for a meal.
That's right. Sometimes when I snack, I eat chips.
But I try to snack on fruit.
That is a healthy way to snack.
But Mark is also snacking on potato chips.
But it's his first bag today.
OK, there is another key word for us.
bag.
bag.
Now a bag is something that you can hold and carry things in.
And there are many different kinds of bags.
You probably have a bookbag.
That's a bag that you carry your books in for school.
Bookbags are important.
But when you go to a store and buy something, they might give you a bag there to
carry the things that you buy.
But sometimes you have to ask for it, too.
And a lot of times women carry bags.
I carry a bag when I leave home.
I use a bag to carry my money and other things.
Hmm. So bags can be very important.
And it's a great word for you to know.
Now let's look at another phrase in this conversation.
Susie says, "Habits aren't easy to change.".
And that's an important sentence.
We learned yesterday that habits are something you do a lot.
So habits are hard to change.
It's hard to do things different from how you usually do them.
It's not easy.
That's right.
It's hard to change bad habits because we get used to doing things a certain
way.
That's right.
Now, friends, it's time for us to go to Conversation B.
(Music).
Hi, Susie. Hi, Mark.
Oh! Potato chips. Can I have one?
Sure. Have more than one.
I eat too many of them.
Thanks. You do snack a lot.
I know. Susie is trying to help me stop.
There are worse habits than snacking.
You could smoke.
Or you could be late all the time!
Yes. But I shouldn't snack too much.
I'll gain weight!
We are still talking about habits in this conversation.
Ken wants some chips.
He says he eats too many of them.
Friends, do you eat too much of something?
Nathan, do you eat too much of something?
Hmm. I don't think I eat too much of something, but sometimes I drink too much
tea.
That's not a good thing, either.
But it's not always good to eat too much of something.
Mark's bad habit is snacking.
But Susie is trying to help him stop.
Now then we see our "Use It!" sentence.
There are worse habits than snacking.
There are worse something than something else.
Let's use this sentence together.
There are worse smells than stinky tofu.
There are worse sounds than thunder.
There are worse things to learn than math.
Friends, you should try to use this sentence.
These are important to know.
But let's keep learning together.
Susie thinks there are worse habits than snacking.
Mark could smoke, and that is a key word.
smoke.
smoke.
When you smoke, you use a cigarette.
And smoking makes smoke, which is like grey gas that floats in the air.
Now, friends, smoking is not a good habit.
Smoking smells really bad.
And if you smoke, it makes you smell bad, too.
Smoking is also very unhealthy.
And that's why it's not a good idea to smoke.
Smoking will hurt your body.
It can hurt your lungs and your mouth and throat.
Many places in a city will not let you smoke inside.
You often have to go outside to smoke.
That's because a lot of people don't like smoking.
That's right.
So now we know some bad habits.
We've talked about being late, smoking and snacking.
So let's look at another key word for today.
gain.
gain.
If you gain something, you get more of it.
And in our conversation, Mark says he could gain weight if he snacks too much.
Now when you gain weight, you get bigger.
It's unhealthy to gain too much weight.
That's right.
Now, friends, we are out of time, so let's move on to Conversation C.
(Music).
You need a good habit, Mark.
Then you can stop the bad one.
I do. What do you suggest?
Get regular exercise.
I do that.
Read good books.
I do. I'm reading one right now.
Then you have some good habits.
I do! Maybe I can have one bad one?
I can keep snacking.
But not too much.
Mark needs to find a good habit so he can stop all the snacking.
So he asks, "What do you suggest?" That is a key word.
suggest.
suggest.
When you suggest something, you say something for other people to think about.
That's right.
When you're with your friends, a lot of times you suggest things for you and
your friends to do.
You may suggest that you all go to the park or suggest that you all go watch a
movie.
Susie and Ken suggest some great ideas.
Ken suggests that he gets regular exercise.
Well, Katie, that sounds like a great idea.
It does. Ken had a great suggestion.
That is such a great idea.
But Katie, what did you say?
I said Ken had a great suggestion. What's wrong?
Well, I think that you used our key word as a noun.
Suggestion is a noun and suggest is a verb.
OK, friends, now I have another suggestion.
Let's practice our key words together.
The first key word is:
snack.
snack.
Alice snacks all the time.
bag.
bag.
Please buy me a bag of apples.
smoke.
smoke.
Don't smoke. That's a bad habit.
gain.
gain.
My baby is gaining weight. He's healthy.
suggest.
suggest.
I need a good book. What do you suggest?
There are some great key words for you to learn today.
So we hope that you practice all of these words.
Say them with a friend.
But right now it's time for us to take a short break.
Please come back and finish theshow with us.
