You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we are very glad that you joined us today.
Today's topic is LIFE.
And the title of our new lesson is Bad Habits.
Bad Habits.
Nathan, what are some bad habits?
Hmm, well, I know some people that drink things that keep them awake late at
night, like coffee or coke, and that can be a bad habit.
You can't get to sleep that way.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you today on Let's Talk in English.
But right now we need to read our Let's Begin reading for today.
Find it in your magazine and read it with Katie.
Let's begin!
Ken has a problem.
He is on his computer late at night.
So he can't get up in the morning.
This is a bad habit. Ken can go online another time.
Then he can get more sleep and get up early.
And he can eat breakfast at home, too.
OK. Let's start today's lesson with Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hi, Carol.
Hi, Ken. Come in!
Please sit down.
Thank you.
What can I do for you?
We have a problem.
What is it?
You. You are late to work.
Well, maybe a few times.
No, Ken. You are often late to work.
Really?
Yes, really.
You were late three times last week.
Uh-oh. Has this ever happened to you, Nathan?
Have you ever had to talk to a boss about a problem?
Hmm, well, I haven't had many bosses.
And I don't think I remember talking to my boss about a problem that was my
fault.
I hope I don't have to later, either.
But Katie, let's talk about one of our key words today because I think it's very
important.
You're right.
Friends, let's learn about this word.
problem.
problem.
A problem is something that's usually bad that you have to make better.
We call that fixing a problem.
Right.
And if you have a problem, it has to get fixed.
That's important.
For example, if you don't have any money, you could say you have a problem.
So you have to fix it.
You can get a job to get money.
But you may have other problems.
If you have a fight with a friend, that might be a problem, too.
So you have to fix it by making things OK with your friend.
But Carol and Ken's problem is that he's always late to work.
He was late three times last week.
So they will have to fix this problem, Katie.
That's right.
But before we find out how they can fix this problem, let's look at our Use It!
What can I do for you?
What can I (blank) for you?
Let's use it.
What can I sing for you?
What can I carry for you?
Ask this question when you want to help someone with something.
You want to do something for someone.
It's a great question to know.
So use this question today.
Right now we need to go to Conversation B.
(Music).
I'm sorry. I have a bad habit.
I go to bed too late.
Why?
Because I'm on the computer late at night.
And you can't get up in the morning.
Well, I can. But I don't move very fast.
So you are late to work.
Yes. And other people are upset.
Yes, they are.
Well, we find out why Ken is always late for work.
He has a bad habit.
He's on his computer too late at night.
Oh, I do that sometimes, too.
But we should learn about our key word first.
Thank you, Katie.
The first key word is:
habit.
habit.
A habit is something that you do a lot of times.
So exercising every day is a good habit because it is good for you.
Now another good habit might be eating healthy every day or studying English for
ten minutes every day.
Well, those are great habits.
They are very good for you.
But sometimes we have bad habits.
A bad habit is something you do that is not good for you.
Sometimes this could be eating bad food or biting your fingernails.
And Ken has a bad habit.
He stays up late because he is on the computer late at night.
Now let's look at our next key word.
computer.
computer.
A computer is a machine that you can use.
I think most of you have computers.
You can go on the Internet with a computer.
We've talked about computers before.
You probably use a computer for school or at your job.
Both Nathan and I use a computer a lot when we are at work.
You can play games on a computer, too.
Computers are very convenient.
But you have to be careful when you use the computer.
You don't want to spend too much time on the computer.
Yes, that's what Ken does and then he can't get up in the mornings.
Now that is a great phrase to know.
Get up.
When you get up in the morning, you wake up and you get out of your bed.
Right.
When you get up, you wake up and get out of your bed like Katie said.
Now Ken can't do that because he's really tired.
Well, he can get up.
But he can't move very fast.
He can't move fast because he's so tired.
Now, Nathan, have you ever felt that way before?
Yes. Sometimes you are so tired you really don't want to get out of bed or do
anything.
But friends, we should go to Conversation C now because there's more to learn
there.
(Music).
What can I do?
Go to bed before midnight.
But all my friends are online late at night.
Find them online another time.
OK. You're right.
Then you can get more sleep.
And you can get up early.
Then I can do something else, too.
What?
I can eat breakfast at home.
I usually don't have time!
Well, Carol helps Ken.
She tells him that he should go to bed before midnight.
And that is a great idea.
If he goes to bed before midnight, he can move faster in the morning.
That's true. It would be better if he went to bed earlier.
But Katie, Ken wants to talk to his friends, and they're online late at night.
Well, Nathan, he should find another time to talk to them.
Hmm, another time. Well, what does that mean?
Oh. I think you used a... a key word, too.
Thanks, Nathan.
Friends, the key word we need to learn about right now is:
another.
another.
Another something means a different something.
Ken should talk to his friends at another time.
That means he should talk to them at a different time.
I see.
Well, we often use this word to talk about doing something at a different time.
But you use it different ways, too.
That's right.
We also use the word to talk about an extra or one more thing.
If you're eating your dinner, you may say that you want to eat another thing.
You want to eat one more thing.
Or if you are shopping, you might want to buy another thing.
You want to buy a different thing.
Now let's look at the next key word in this conversation.
breakfast.
breakfast.
Breakfast is the meal that you eat very first thing in the morning.
You eat a lot of different and great foods for breakfast.
Hmm. So what is some breakfast food?
Hmm, I can think of eggs, muffins and fruit.
There's also pancakes.
Mmm. Katie, I'm getting hungry thinking about all this food.
Oh. Me, too. I love eating breakfast.
Pancakes and fruit are my favorite.
Nathan, what do you like to eat for breakfast?
Well, there are a lot of choices.
I usually just eat toast.
I guess that's good enough for me.
It's important to eat breakfast in the morning, friends.
It's a really important meal.
Eating breakfast will help you eat better for the rest of the day, too.
That's right.
Breakfast is the most important meal.
A lot of people say that.
So make sure you eat breakfast.
But Ken doesn't have breakfast.
He doesn't have time.
And that is a great phrase to know.
If you have time for something, it means that you can do it.
If you don't have time, you can't do it.
OK. Right now I think that we need to review today's key words.
Katie, can you say the first one?
Here is the first key word.
problem.
problem.
I have a problem. Can you help me?
computer.
computer.
Ned types letters on his computer.
habit.
habit.
Sam reads a lot. That's a good habit.
another.
another.
I want another apple. I'm still hungry.
breakfast.
breakfast.
I eat eggs for breakfast.
OK, friends, those are all of today's keys... key words.
I hope that you remembered them and said them with us.
Practice them at home.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we will be back afterthat.
