You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's time to learn some English and have some fun while we do that.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our first topic this month is ACTIVITIES.
And the title of our lesson is Let's Make Cards!
Let's Make Cards!
Nathan, have you made a card before?
Yes. I have made cards for many people.
One time I remember making cards that we would send to people in another country
that we did not know.
We wanted them to have a good Christmas.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
It's great to be here learning with you together today.
Right now, why don't we open up our LTE magazines and look at the Let's Begin
reading for today.
Katie will read it with you.
Let's begin!
Megan and Susie are making Christmas cards.
They use paper for the cards.
They cut other paper into shapes.
Then they put them on the front of each card.
They use glue or tape.
They also put pictures and stickers on the cards.
Many of the cards say "Merry Christmas." Megan and Susie are having fun!
And I think we'll have fun today, too.
Let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Mark.
Hi, Megan. Hello, Susie.
Are you still working?
No, we aren't working.
Well... we are working on our Christmas cards!
Now? But Christmas is three weeks from now.
I know. But we're making our Christmas cards.
Then we write in them, put them in envelopes and mail them.
So we need a lot of time!
This is the best time of year, Nathan.
Aren't you happy that it's December?
Yes, I love December, too, Katie.
The weather is cold, school is almost finished, and it's almost Christmas.
I love Christmas.
I love Christmas, too.
It's my favorite holiday, and...
Oh, Nathan, we should probably tell our friends about this key word.
Christmas.
Christmas.
Christmas is a special holiday at the end of the year.
It's always in December.
Mmhm. Christmas is a great holiday.
Christmas is the holiday when we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
It's the time of the year when you go home and see your family, too.
You give special presents to the people you love.
And you do special things for Christmas.
Many people decorate Christmas trees or sing songs for Christmas.
Nathan, does your family do anything special for Christmas?
Well, I think a lot of families do this in the United States.
But we have big red socks that we call stockings and we get little presents in
our stockings.
But there's something else you can do for Christmas, too.
You can make Christmas cards for your friends and family.
And that's what Susie and Megan are doing in our conversation.
They're making Christmas cards.
OK. Why don't we move on to Conversation B now.
(Music).
These are cool cards.
How do you make them?
First we make the cards from paper.
Then we put other paper and things on the front.
Do you cut paper into different shapes?
Yes. We also use pictures and stickers.
Sometimes I use pictures from other cards.
So people send cards to you.
Then you cut out the pictures.
That's right!
Now Mark wants to make cards, also.
He thinks they are cool.
So he asks, "How do you make them?" This is a great sentence to know.
How do you do something?
Yeah. Like:
How do you spell the word "Dinosaur?" Or how do you play this game?
Try to use this sentence pattern on your own.
Yes, you should try.
Now Megan tells Mark how to make cards.
First you make the card out of paper like this.
You can take a big piece of paper and fold it in half.
But then what should you do, Katie?
Well, then you put paper and other things on the front of your card.
You can put different things on the front.
But Nathan, that's a key word today.
That's right.
We should look at it together.
front.
front.
The front is different from the back of something.
This is the front of my body.
That's right. But the other side is the back of your body.
And when you read a book, you start at the front of the book.
We do things from front to back.
Right. And when you go home, you may go into the front door of the house.
But in our conversation, you put things on the front of the card.
Yeah. I want to write "Merry Christmas" on the front of my card.
That's something that you say to people when it is Christmas.
And I want to put something on the front of the card to make it look pretty.
Um... Maybe this.
Hmm.
Nathan, that looks kind of weird, don't you think?
Yeah, but... Oh. I... I think I know why.
You need to cut some paper to make some shapes.
And that is another key word.
cut.
cut.
When you cut things, you need something really important.
You need scissors.
Oh! If I have scissors, I can cut some shapes out of paper.
Let me try.
Nathan, what are you going to cut?
Well, I almost finish cutting a shape earlier.
I think you will know what it is.
My shape is a Christmas tree.
And I cut out a star.
That'll go great on my Christmas card.
Oh, friends, when you use the word cut, you say that you cut out things or you
cut things out.
I cut out a star. I cut a star out.
So Katie and I cut things out.
But it's still not working.
Katie, I tried, but the paper will not stay on my card.
Mine either, Nathan.
I think that we need something else to finish these cards.
And I think that we'll find out what we need in Conversation C.
(Music).
Can I make a card?
Sure. We have a lot of paper.
And you can borrow some glue or tape.
You can use these pens and markers, too.
Great! Thanks.
Who is your card for?
It's for the best mom in the world.
Merry Christmas, Mom!
Oh, now we know what we need.
Nathan and I need glue and tape to finish our cards.
Those are important.
And they're also important key words.
The first one is:
glue.
glue.
Glue is something that is really sticky.
That's right.
If you use glue on something, it will stay on that thing for a long time.
You can use glue to make things stay together.
When you use glue, it won't come apart.
So you can use glue to put the card together.
We put paper on our cards with glue.
But we can also use tape.
That's another key word, so let's look at this one.
tape.
tape.
Tape is something else that you use to put two things together.
But if you use tape, you can usually pull the two things apart.
That's right.
So I can use tape on my card.
I can tape some paper to this card just like this.
Now it stays on.
And Nathan just used our key word as a verb, too.
The word tape can be both a noun and a verb.
You can use tape to stick things together or you can tape two things together.
So what else do we use tape and glue for?
Well, if you tear a piece of paper, you can use tape to put it back together.
And if you break something, you can try to use glue to put it back together.
But we try to use tape and glue to make cards.
Now friends, when you make a card, you give it to someone.
And that's what Susie asks Mark:
Who is your card for?
She wants to know who he will give it to.
But we don't have any more time to talk about our cards.
We need to talk about key words.
Let's get started, Katie.
Here is your first key word.
Christmas.
Christmas.
Christmas is my favorite holiday.
cut.
cut.
Cut the paper into small pieces.
front.
front.
Use the door at the front of the house.
glue.
glue.
I need some glue for this card.
tape.
tape.
Dan used tape on his gift.
OK, friends, those are all of today's key... key words.
I hope that you remember them and that you use them when you speak English.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we'll be rightback.
