Hi, everyone. Welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and it's time for another Saturday review show.
We learned a lot this week.
First we talked about the holidays.
During the holidays, you do many things and you can see parades.
Those are some of my favorite things.
You can watch people march and see the soldiers in uniforms.
Sometimes you can even get candy.
How many balloons does New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade have?
Later in the week, we talked about the supermarket.
You can buy so many different things at the supermarket these days.
And like we learned, the supermarket has many different services.
What kinds of services can you find at the supermarket?
Find out the answers to these questions as we review the conversations right
now.
(Music).
Hi, Ken. Are you watching something?
Yes. I'm watching a parade on YouTube.
Are you watching a Thanksgiving Day parade?
Yes. I like holiday parades.
Which parade are you watching?
I'm watching last year's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York.
You must like parades.
I do! There are so many exciting things in them.
I like parades, too. I like all the floats.
I like all the marching bands.
I played in a marching band in high school.
Really! Were you in any parades?
Yes. I was in several parades.
Do you go to parades now?
Yes. I like the soldiers in parades.
Their uniforms are great.
I like the candy at parades, too.
Ken, people throw candy to children at parades.
You're an adult.
Ha...
I know. But I still catch a piece or two!
I look for the fire trucks in parades, too.
They make a lot of noise!
And sometimes parades have really old cars.
I like those.
I like everything about parades!
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Today we are going to talk about something that I love. Parades!
Please help me welcome my special guest, Ms. Pat Parade!
Welcome to the program, Pat!
I'm glad to be here, Rob.
Let's talk about parades.
Everyone loves parades!
They do. People go to them in person, or they watch them on TV.
Yes! Many people like the big parade balloons.
Those giant balloons are amazing.
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York has more than 40 of them.
Do you have a favorite parade, Pat?
I have several. I really like the Rose Parade in California.
It has the best floats.
It has lots of marching bands, too.
The best high school and college bands march in it.
And the bands march a long way.
The parade is more than five and a half miles long!
What are some other great parades in America?
There are some great St. Patrick's Day parades.
The one in New York City is the biggest parade in the country.
Really!
Yes. About 150,000 people march in it.
Thousands of people stand on the sidewalks to watch it.
Are there any floats in that parade?
No. There are just people marching!
It's really amazing to watch.
What are you doing, Susie?
I'm making a list.
For what?
For the supermarket! I'm planning my big Thanksgiving dinner.
Susie, Thanksgiving is tomorrow!
I know! So I must shop today!
What do you need?
A lot of things! First, I need a turkey!
You can't have a Thanksgiving meal without one!
Hey, I have a newspaper.
It has an ad for Freeway Supermarket.
May I see it?
Sure. Maybe the store is having a good sale.
Their turkeys are only 99 cents a pound!
Is that a good price?
Yes! And their potatoes are only 35 cents a pound.
I can shop at Freeway!
Mmm... I love mashed potatoes with lots of butter.
Me, too! And butter is on my list!
What about green beans?
Oh, yes. I can put green beans on my list.
What else is on your list?
Sweet potatoes, onions, bread, pumpkin...
Maybe I can shop with you, Susie.
Why?
So I can help you. You might forget something on your list.
(Music).
Susie, are you OK?
You look tired.
I am tired!
I just went shopping for all my Thanksgiving food!
During lunch?
Yes. Ken helped me. We shopped really fast!
Did you buy a lot of food?
Yes, and I got some great deals at Freeway Supermarket.
Oh, that store does have good prices!
Their cans of pumpkin are really cheap!
Yes, all their cans of vegetables are cheap!
Last week, their loaves of bread were buy one, get one free!
Wow! That's great!
Are you preparing a big Thanksgiving dinner?
Yes, and I still have a lot to do!
Do you cook a big meal every Thanksgiving?
No! My mom usually cooks.
But I wanted to give her a break this year.
That's nice of you!
Or stupid of me!
I might not be ready in time!
Do you need help?
I'm not going home for the holiday.
I'll help you if I can eat with you!
Sure! You're welcome to! Thanks, Mark!
Can my husband and I come and help, too?
OK! Sure! But I might need to go to the supermarket again.
We'll need more food!
Ha...
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
You know, grocery stores have changed a lot over the years.
And here to tell us all about those changes is Mr. Sam Supermarket!
Sam Supermarket, tell us how grocery stores have changed over the years.
Today's supermarkets look very different than they did 20 years ago, Rob.
In what way?
Well, many supermarkets today have coffee shops, restaurants, banks and gas
stations!
People can drink coffee while they shop!
Yes, it's convenient!
And some supermarkets even have a place where children can play!
Really! That's great for parents.
Yes, children can play while their parents shop!
What else can people do at today's supermarkets?
They can get photos printed.
They can also pick up medicine.
Why do some supermarkets offer so many services?
They want lots of customers!
And many supermarkets now offer online shopping, don't they?
Yes. You can order your groceries online and then just pick them up.
You don't have to walk around the supermarket.
But then you won't get to enjoy all the great services.
Grocery stores today don't look like they did 20 years ago.
Today's stores offer much more!
At many American supermarkets, you can find restaurants, coffee shops, banks and
gas stations.
You can also print photos and pick up medicine.
Some supermarkets even offer children a place to play.
Children can play safely while their parents shop!
Many supermarkets also offer online shopping.
All of these services make shopping more convenient for customers.
And that helps the supermarkets get more customers.
What a great week last week was.
There was so much to learn.
Well, I learned a lot. I learned so much.
I mean I feel so smart.
Oh, I'm sure everyone does.
All of our friends are so smart, Chris.
Well, I am definitely smart.
And I'm ready to show you.
Don't you have some questions for me, Katie?
Yes, I do, Chris. I'm so glad that you're ready today.
Friends, last week Ken and Rob watched the parade on YouTube.
Oh, parades! I love parades.
Katie, don't you just love parades?
Yeah. They're a lot of fun. And many people watch America's big parades.
So friends, here is the first question.
How many people march in New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade?
Ooh, good question.
And I know the answer! 150,000 people march in the parade every year.
That's right. Great job, Chris. You are so smart.
I love parades in New York.
They're so much fun.
I would like to go. Someday I will go, Katie. Someday!
I'm sure you will, Chris.
All right, friends, let's review some more.
We also talked about supermarkets last week.
Supermarkets are very important.
Of course, they are.
You can buy a lot of food at a supermarket.
That's right. And Susie needs food for her Thanksgiving dinner.
She needs to buy a turkey. So here is my next question.
Does Susie cook a big meal every Thanksgiving?
Ooh. Let me think about this... No. She doesn't.
Susie's mom usually cooks for Thanksgiving.
That's right. But Susie wanted to give her a break this year.
That's nice of Susie!
Yes, that is nice.
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner is a hard job.
I hope Susie has enough food.
I'm sure she does.
Friends, we're going to take a short break.
We will be right back afterthat.
