Hello, friends.
Thank you for joining us here in the LTE TV studio.
You are watching Let's Talk in English.
I am your teacher Nathan.
It's great to learn together with you today.
Today is our last day on the topic - SHOPPING.
And the title of today's new lesson is called Supermarket Services.
Supermarket Services.
What services do you use at the supermarket, Katie?
Well, Nathan, when I go to the supermarket, I usually buy food like everyone
else.
But some of the other services I use are getting gas at the supermarket or
picking up medicine when I need to get it.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm the other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson today.
I think that we will learn a lot.
So let's find out what different things we can do at the supermarket starting
with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
You know, grocery stores have changed a lot over the years.
And here to tell us all about those changes is Mr. Sam Supermarket!
Sam Supermarket, tell us how grocery stores have changed over the years.
Today's supermarkets look very different than they did 20 years ago, Rob.
In what way?
Well, many supermarkets today have coffee shops, restaurants, banks and gas
stations!
People can drink coffee while they shop!
Yes, it's convenient!
And some supermarkets even have a place where children can play!
Really! That's great for parents.
Yes, children can play while their parents shop!
Sam Supermarket is at the studio today.
And he wants to tell us how grocery stores have changed.
And that is our first key word for today.
grocery store.
grocery store.
A grocery store is a store like a supermarket.
You can buy all of your food at the grocery store.
I usually like to go to the grocery store.
Grocery stores have many different kinds of food.
You can find fruits, vegetables, meat, bread and much more at a grocery store.
But grocery stores have changed.
They aren't the same anymore.
Do you like grocery stores, Katie?
Yes, I do.
They're very convenient because you can buy everything that you need at the
grocery store.
That's true.
And supermarkets today also have coffee shops, and restaurants, banks and gas
stations, too.
Wow! You can do so many things while you shop.
That is so convenient!
Mmhm. It is convenient.
And you use our next key word, Katie.
while.
while.
"While" means at the same time.
You can do something while you do something else.
You can do two things at the same time.
And our key word is also in our "Use It!" sentence.
People can drink coffee while they shop.
So let's use it.
I can study while I watch TV.
Or I can pay a bill while I'm at the convenience store.
I can visit my family while I'm in America.
Or I can read a book while I'm on vacation.
Do you see it, friends?
When you use the word "while," it means at the same time you do something else.
Try to use this word and this sentence today.
And while you do that, let's go to Conversation B.
(Music).
What else can people do at today's supermarkets?
They can get photos printed.
They can also pick up medicine.
Why do some supermarkets offer so many services?
They want lots of customers!
And many supermarkets now offer online shopping, don't they?
Yes. You can order your groceries online, and then just pick them up.
You don't have to walk around the supermarket.
But then you won't get to enjoy all the great services!
There's even more you can do at the supermarket.
You can also get your photos printed and pick up medicine.
Now those are the rest of our key words for today, so let's look at one of them.
print.
print.
When you print something, you put it on paper.
You usually print things from a computer.
But our conversation says that people can print photos or pictures.
This means they print them from their camera and it makes a picture.
Now you might have to print a paper for school.
Or you might have to print out your homework.
There are a lot of things you can print.
And when you print something, you use a printer.
That's right. That's the machine that prints things.
But we should talk about another key word.
They're all very important to learn.
Thank you, Nathan.
OK. Friends, let's look at the next key word.
pick up.
pick up.
If you pick something up from somewhere, you go and get it.
You pick up the things that you need when you go to the grocery store.
Or you can pick up something from the convenience store.
You can also pick up a person.
How do you do that, Katie?
Well, your mom and your dad might pick you up from school.
They drive to your school and they get you and they bring you back home.
And if you order food from a restaurant, you have to go and pick it up.
Like our conversation says, you could pick up medicine from the grocery store.
And that is our last key word for today.
Let's learn about this one together.
medicine.
medicine.
Medicine is what you take when you are sick or when you don't feel well.
That's right.
If you don't feel good, you can go to the doctor.
And if you're really sick, the doctor will tell you that you need some medicine.
And you can pick it up at the grocery store.
So that is another reason that the grocery stores are convenient.
You can pick up medicine from the store.
And medicine will help you feel better when you are sick.
But be careful. You should not take too much.
If you take too much medicine, it can make you even sicker.
Right. You should only take medicine when you're really sick.
Now sometimes medicine is like pills that were in our picture, or sometimes it's
like liquid that you need to drink.
Now it's really time to go to today's Read It.
(Music).
Grocery stores today don't look like they did 20 years ago.
Today's stores offer much more!
At many American supermarkets, you can find restaurants, coffee shops, banks and
gas stations.
You can also print photos and pick up medicine.
Some supermarkets even offer children a place to play.
Children can play safely while their parents shop!
Many supermarkets also offer online shopping.
All of these services make shopping more convenient for customers.
And that helps the supermarkets get more customers.
The first sentence of Read It says, "Grocery stores today don't look like they
did 20 years ago.".
So Katie, when they say "today," what do they mean?
Well, they don't mean this day.
The word "today" here means these days or lately or recently.
And today's stores offer much more to people.
That means that these stores have a lot more for the people who shop there.
And that's true. That's why I like to go to the grocery store.
That's right.
You can eat there, you can go to the bank there, or you can get gas and do a lot
of other things.
And some places also offer online shopping.
Oh, online shopping!
Nathan, that's very convenient for people.
Friends, if you shop online, you don't have to leave your home to shop for food.
You can just do it on your computer.
Nathan, have you ever shopped online for food?
No. I have never bought food online, but I have bought other things online.
Now all of these things are true.
These services are all very convenient.
So there are a lot of customers at the grocery store.
Now friends, we have something to offer you.
It's time to practice our key words for today.
Say them with us.
The first one is:
grocery store.
grocery store.
Get some eggs at the grocery store.
print.
print.
I must print my homework before class.
pick up.
pick up.
I'll order a pizza, and you pick it up.
medicine.
medicine.
I'm sick and need some medicine.
while.
while.
Dad made dinner while Mom was at work.
All right, friends, try to remember these key words.
And keep practicing them so that you don't forget how to use them.
Now it's time for a break.
Please come back and join us for the rest of theshow.
