Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
We hope that you are ready to learn some new words and phrases today.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your English teachers here on the show.
So let's look at today's new topic.
It is called SHOPPING.
And our title of the lesson for today is called Food at the Supermarket.
Food at the Supermarket.
So, Katie, what do you buy at the supermarket?
Well, when I go to the supermarket, I usually buy food.
I often buy a lot of fruit and maybe some vegetables so I can make meals that
week.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We need to get ready for today's lesson.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Susie is making a list for the supermarket.
She needs food for her Thanksgiving dinner.
Ken has an ad for Freeway Supermarket.
Their turkeys are cheap.
And their potatoes are only 35 cents a pound.
Susie can make mashed potatoes!
She also needs green beans, sweet potatoes, bread and many other things.
Well, we have a lot of great things to learn today.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
What are you doing, Susie?
I'm making a list.
For what?
For the supermarket!
I'm planning my big Thanksgiving dinner.
Susie, Thanksgiving is tomorrow!
I know! So I must shop today!
What do you need?
A lot of things!
First, I need a turkey!
You can't have a Thanksgiving meal without one!
It's almost Thanksgiving.
That means it's time to go to the supermarket.
The supermarket is a busy place.
So what do you need to take with you when you go to the supermarket, Katie?
Well, that's an easy question, Nathan.
You should take money, of course.
OK. Uh, is there anything else that you would take?
Hmm. Maybe a bag... Yeah, a bag!
You need a bag to carry all the food that you buy.
Um, maybe, maybe. But really, I think you should take a list.
That's important, right?
A list?
What is a list?
Well, it's a key word for today.
So let's let Katie learn about this key word.
list.
list.
A list is something that you make.
You write down things that you want to remember.
You write down many different things.
So, Katie, why do you think that you should take a list to the supermarket?
Oh, I know!
So you can remember all the food you want to buy.
That's a great idea, Nathan!
Now you've got it.
But you can write lists at other times and for other things, too.
Maybe you need to know what you need to do the next day.
Well, write a list.
If you have a lot of things to do, a list will help you remember them.
Actually, I do that every day.
Or, friends, if you have a lot of homework, you can make a list of all the
homework you have to do.
Or you can make a list of people.
If you're having a party, write down a list of your friends' names.
But Susie needs a list because she has to go shopping today.
And the most important thing that she needs to buy is a turkey which is another
key word.
turkey.
turkey.
A turkey is a kind of bird, but we can eat turkey, too.
And in America, we usually eat turkey on Thanksgiving.
That's usually the main food for this special holiday.
You can't have a Thanksgiving meal without a turkey.
That's right.
A turkey is the most important food at Thanksgiving.
So you have to have a turkey.
But it takes a long time to cook a turkey.
And that's why you have to plan a lot for your Thanksgiving dinner.
It's an important meal with a lot of food and a lot of people.
But you know, learning other key words is important, too.
So let's move on to Conversation B.
(Music).
Hey, I have a newspaper.
It has an ad for Freeway Supermarket.
May I see it?
Sure. Maybe the store is having a good sale.
Their turkeys are only 99 cents a pound!
Is that a good price?
Yes! And their potatoes are only 35 cents a pound.
I can shop at Freeway!
When you go shopping, you should do what Ken and Susie do.
Look for ads in the newspaper.
Maybe you can find when a store has a good sale.
Ads or advertisements are good because they tell you when things are on sale,
when they are cheaper.
And you can see them when you go to a store or maybe in the newspaper.
That's right. And it looks like Freeway Supermarket is having a sale.
Their turkeys are only 99 cents a pound.
And that is one of our key words today.
cent.
cent.
A cent is part of an American dollar.
This penny is one American cent, and $1 is made up of 100 cents or 100 pennies.
Mmhm. That's right.
So these turkeys are cheap.
They are 99 cents a pound, or a little bit less than $1.
Now when you're in America, you use cents.
Sometimes at the supermarket, you can buy things for 75 cents or 99 cents.
But if something is 100 cents, it's the same as $1.
You don't say 100 cents.
Right. We just say $1.
And we find out that the potatoes at Freeway are also very cheap.
They are only 35 cents a pound.
That is cheap.
I guess that Susie and Ken did find some good deals.
And now we need to go see what there is to learn about in Conversation C.
(Music).
Mmm... I love mashed potatoes with lots of butter.
Me, too!
And butter is on my list!
What about green beans?
Oh, yes. I can put green beans on my list.
What else is on your list?
Sweet potatoes, onions, bread, pumpkin...
Maybe I can shop with you, Susie.
Why?
So I can help you.
You might forget something on your list!
(Music).
We have more words to learn about in this conversation.
Susie is making a list.
And she can put things on her list.
But what does she want to put on her list, Katie?
Well, butter is one thing that's on her list.
And she says she can put green beans on her list.
I remember learning about butter the other day on Let's Talk in English.
But today one of our key words is...
green bean.
green bean.
Now green beans are a kind of vegetable.
Like the name says, they are green and they are good for you, too.
That's right.
Green beans are a great vegetable to eat.
They are different from other beans because they are longer.
And green beans are another special vegetable to eat at Thanksgiving.
A lot of people eat this food at Thanksgiving.
But we eat a lot of different kinds of food at Thanksgiving.
Nathan, what is your favorite Thanksgiving food?
That's really hard to answer because there are a lot of good choices.
But my mom makes one kind of really delicious noodles at Thanksgiving.
Now Susie has a lot more food on her list.
And one of them is another key word for today.
bread.
bread.
Bread is another kind of food.
You might use two slices or pieces of bread to make a sandwich.
That's right. Bread is good with butter on it.
Like we talked about earlier this month, you can bake bread.
I don't know how to bake bread, but I think it would be nice to learn how.
Yes, I think so, too.
Well, Susie has a long list of food that she needs to buy.
Katie, can you think of any other kinds of food that it might be good to have at
Thanksgiving?
Um, well, we already said turkey and green beans and bread.
Maybe she should get some potatoes.
That's another good food to have at Thanksgiving.
Yes. You always need potatoes at Thanksgiving.
But now let's talk about our "Use It!" sentence.
I can put green beans on my list.
I can put something on my list.
I can put potatoes on my list.
Katie, why don't you try to use it?
OK. Here is my sentence.
I can put strawberries on my list.
I can put cereal on my list.
OK! Now, friends, it's time to review all of today's key words together.
Here is your first key word.
list.
list.
Here's a list of the students' names.
turkey.
turkey.
Do you have turkeys on your farm?
cent.
cent.
There are 100 cents in a dollar.
green bean.
green bean.
Wash the green beans. Then cook them.
bread.
bread.
I want a sandwich. Where's the bread?
OK, friends, those are all of today's key words.
They're important words to know when you go to the supermarket, or when you are
trying to make a meal for people.
Right now we're going to take a break.
But we'll be right back afterthat.
