Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
We are so glad that you came to learn with us together today.
My name is Nathan, and I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Today we have a new topic for you called ENTERTAINMENT.
And today's new lesson is called Everyone Loves Parades.
Everyone Loves Parades.
Do you remember going to parades as a kid, Katie?
Yes, Nathan, I do remember parades.
We used to go to parades a lot when I was a little kid.
They're a lot of fun, and I'm excited to talk about them today.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson today.
So let's get started by taking out your LTE magazines.
Turn to today's Let's Begin!
And you can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken is watching a holiday parade.
There are many exciting things in parades.
Rob likes parades, too. He likes the soldiers and their uniforms.
Rob likes the fire trucks and floats, too.
Ken likes candy. People throw candy to children at parades.
But Ken can get a piece or two.
Well, let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Ken. Are you watching something?
Yes. I'm watching a parade on YouTube.
Are you watching a Thanksgiving Day parade?
Yes. I like holiday parades.
Which parade are you watching?
I'm watching last year's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York.
You must like parades.
I do!
There are so many exciting things in them.
Before we do anything else today, friends, we should talk about the word parade.
Our lesson today is all about parades.
A parade is a kind of show that moves down the street.
They are a lot of fun to watch.
Yes. There are so many things to see and hear in a parade.
We will talk about those things later.
But first, it's important to know that parades usually happen on holidays.
That is important.
But let's talk about that key word.
holiday.
holiday.
A holiday is a special day in the year when we have fun remembering something.
Christmas is a big holiday.
That's right.
We have Christmas to remember Jesus being born, which was a really great gift to
all of us.
We do that by giving gifts to others, singing songs and having parties.
There are some Christmas parades.
But they are more common in the United States on July 4th.
We remember America's freedom on that day.
But what holiday has the most famous parade, Katie?
Well, that would be Thanksgiving.
In New York City, there is a very big parade on Thanksgiving Day.
You can always watch it on TV if you are not in the city.
Mmhm. And this parade will be on Thursday this week.
Ken is watching last year's parade.
But let's see what Ken and Rob like about it in Conversation B.
(Music).
I like parades, too.
I like all the floats.
I like all the marching bands.
I played in a marching band in high school.
Really! Were you in any parades?
Yes. I was in several parades.
Do you go to parades now?
Yes. I like the soldiers in parades.
Their uniforms are great.
There really are a lot of things to see in a parade.
Rob and Ken talked about so many things that they like to see.
Rob likes all the floats.
Floats are very interesting.
In a parade, floats are usually made on the back of big cars.
And they make the car look like a different thing or place.
Floats are very creative, and they have a lot of colors.
Some might look like a jungle.
And another might look like it is in the ocean.
And they are different every year.
But parades always have marching bands, too.
They dress in bright colors and they have big hats.
And they play music while they go down the street.
And the music they play is really fun, too.
Do you like marching band music, Nathan?
Of course.
(Background Noise).
That music just makes you smile.
I was never in a marching band like Rob was, but I'm sure it would have been
great.
I think you would have to practice very hard.
Some other people that work very hard are in parades.
And they are a key word today.
soldier.
soldier.
Soldiers are people who fight for their country when they need to.
Mmhm. And in some places, all men have to be soldiers for a year or maybe two.
The United States used to choose some people to be soldiers.
They needed people to fight.
But now, you can choose to be a soldier if you want.
If you choose to be a soldier, you might need to walk in a parade and wave to
people.
And when soldiers are in parades, they wear their nice uniforms for people to
see.
And that is a good key word to talk about.
uniform.
uniform.
A uniform is clothes that everybody at the same group wears.
The clothes are the same.
And if you wear a uniform, we say that you are in uniform.
So when you see soldiers in a parade, they are all in uniform.
What other people might need to wear uniforms, Katie?
Well, I see a lot of students going to school in uniform.
Friends, if you're a student, you might have a few different uniforms to wear at
school.
Now, Nathan, have you ever had to wear a school uniform?
No. I never had a school uniform.
But when I was in school, I was in a band.
And when we would play for everyone to hear, we needed to wear a uniform.
That happens. I have never had to wear a school uniform, either.
But friends, you don't have to wear a uniform for this class.
We can just keep learning like this in Conversation C.
(Music).
I like the candy at parades, too.
Ken, people throw candy to children at parades.
You're an adult.
I know.
But I still catch a piece or two!
I look for the fire trucks in parades, too.
They make a lot of noise!
And sometimes parades have really old cars.
I like those.
I like everything about parades!
Rob must like a lot of things.
We still have a lot more parade things to talk about today.
One of them is candy.
Do you remember getting candy at parades, Katie?
Sure. At parades, I would get a lot of pieces of candy and carry them all home
in a bag.
Then I could eat candy for a few weeks.
Yes. I remember doing that, too.
But Katie, I heard you say a very useful key word.
piece.
piece.
A piece is just one thing, like one piece of candy or a piece of paper.
But a piece can also mean one part of something.
A piece of pizza or a puzzle piece is like that.
There are many pieces in one whole pizza or one puzzle.
Or sometimes things break into pieces like a window.
Then there are many pieces of glass that were part of one window.
So there are a few ways to use the word piece.
Ken likes to catch a piece of candy or two.
But we need to talk about something else that Rob likes.
Fire trucks.
Yes. You are right, Katie.
So let's look at that key word together.
truck.
truck.
A truck is a kind of car that has an empty place in the back where you can put
things.
I've seen a lot of blue trucks before.
They are used to take things from one place to another.
And most people use them for work.
But in the United States, many people have their own trucks.
And those trucks are also very big, like the one you saw in the picture.
4 or 5 people can sit in the front of them, but they still have a lot of space
in the back, too.
But we need to talk about a very different kind of truck.
Fire trucks.
A fire truck is used to stop fires.
They carry a lot of people and things for them to use.
Back in America, I rode in a fire truck one time.
We got to visit the station and see what a fire truck is like.
That is exciting.
Now sometimes firemen ride on fire trucks in parades so everyone in the town can
see them.
And Rob likes to see fire trucks, too.
He says a "Use It!" sentence about that.
I like everything about parades.
Oh, I can use that sentence.
I like everything about this book.
I like everything about chocolate.
And I like everything about today's key words.
So, friends, let's practice them together.
Here's the first one.
holiday.
holiday.
Thanksgiving is Jen's favorite holiday.
soldier.
soldier.
A soldier protects his country.
uniform.
uniform.
Wendy wears a uniform to school.
truck.
truck.
Put the chairs in the truck.
piece.
piece.
I want a piece of cake.
All right. Those are today's key words.
Did you remember them?
Try to use them today with a friend for some practice.
But right now we want to take a short break.
Don't worry. We'll be back very soon.
(Music).
