Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we learn English and we have fun together.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us here at the LTE TV studios.
Today our topic is AROUND TOWN.
And the title of our new lesson is Dream Houses.
Dream Houses.
Nathan, do you know what your dream house would look like?
Hmm, not really. I haven't thought about it that much.
But I know that I want a chair where I can look and sit outside watching the
sunset.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you today.
But right now, let's read our Let's Begin reading for today.
It's in your LTE magazine.
Right now Katie can read it with you.
Let's begin!
Megan is planning her dream home.
What does it look like?
It has three stories and a big yard.
It also has a big balcony.
And she can walk around in her huge closet.
Mark's dream home has a big garage and a game room.
Can Megan and Mark buy their dream homes?
Not now. These homes are expensive!
We'll learn some useful things today.
So let's start with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Megan. What are you reading?
This is a magazine about houses.
I'm planning my dream home.
Are you shopping for a house?
No. I'm just looking at the pictures for fun!
May I see?
Sure!
There are a lot of ideas in here.
You're right!
So what does your dream home look like?
I can show you.
A dream home.
It's what everyone wants, right?
The perfect house.
And Megan is planning her dream home... dream home.
Does she have this house now, Nathan?
No. Her dream home means that she wants this home sometime in the future.
We have many things that we could call dream (blank).
Like a dream job - that's a job you want to have.
Or a dream car - the car that you most want to have some day.
That's right.
So Megan is planning for her dream home.
And that is a key word for today.
plan.
plan.
If you plan things, you decide what all you need to do and you get ready for it.
That's right.
We usually talk about making plans.
But here we use the word as a verb.
You plan things. You might plan a vacation.
And when you plan a vacation, you decide where you want to go and what you want
to see.
Or you can plan what you want to do on the weekend.
You decide what things you will do.
But Megan is planning her dream home.
So what do you think she is trying to decide, Nathan?
Well, she probably wants to plan where it will be, and how many rooms it has,
and how many floors it has.
Maybe she wants to plan the color of the house, too.
That's right.
You can plan anything when you want to plan your dream home.
Our "Use It!" sentence today is:
What does your dream home look like?
What does (something) look like?
So what does your mom look like?
Or what does the painting look like?
And in that sentence, we also see another key word.
That's right, Nathan.
Friends, the key word is:
like.
like.
If you want to know what something looks like, you want to know how it looks.
Mark wants to know how Megan's dream home looks.
Mmhm. So if I ask Katie what her car looks like, I want to know how her car
looks.
I want to know what kind of car it is and what color it is.
Sometimes we also say that things look like other things.
If we say that something looks like something else, they look almost the same.
Or people can look like each other.
You may look like your mom or you might look like your dad.
That's right.
You might have the same eyes or the same nose as your mom or dad.
Now, friends, it's time to go to Conversation B.
We'll be back.
(Music).
That's a big house!
It is. This house has three stories!
The yard is huge!
There is a pool behind the house, too.
I love swimming pools.
This is my dream home.
Find another home!
Look at this other house.
It has an indoor pool!
Nice! You can swim in the winter!
Megan's dream house is big.
It has three stories.
And that is one of today's key words.
story.
story.
A story in a building is the same as a floor.
It is very different from a story in a book.
Now a building might be 5 or even 10 stories tall.
That's right.
Many buildings have a lot of stories.
The building that Nathan and I work in has six stories.
And sometimes apartment buildings may have a lot of stories - even as many as 30
or more.
And houses can have stories, too.
But most homes are only one or two stories tall.
Taipei 101 has 101 stories.
But the house we're talking about today has three stories.
Now that's big for a house.
Not many houses have three stories.
So Megan's dream home is very big.
And the house that Megan shows Mark also has a huge yard.
And Nathan, that is another key word.
Thank you, Katie.
Let's look at this word together.
yard.
yard.
A yard is the land that is outside of a house.
Many houses have yards, especially in the United States.
And some even have a front yard and a backyard.
That's right. A yard is the place where you can play outside.
A yard usually has grass on it.
So you can run around outside in the yard.
Yes.
A yard is a fun place to play when you are at home.
And this house even has a swimming pool.
Now that sounds like fun.
I like to swim outside.
Nathan, it sounds like Megan has thought about her dream home a lot.
Yes, it does.
And now Mark is thinking about his dream home, too.
He sees one with an indoor pool.
And let's look at what Megan says here.
She says, "Nice! You can swim in the winter!".
Now when she says "nice" here, it's like she's saying cool or awesome.
You can say both.
Yes. "Nice" is a good word to use.
We hear it a lot.
OK, friends, now it's time for us to go to Conversation C and learn a few more
things for today.
(Music).
My dream home has a game room!
My dream home has a big balcony!
Well, my dream home has a big garage!
It is big enough for five cars!
My dream home has a huge closet!
I can walk around in it!
When can you buy your dream home?
Not soon. I need more money.
A lot more!
Mark and Megan keep talking about their dream homes.
Mark's dream home has a game room.
And that's a room where you can play a lot of games.
And Megan's dream home has a big balcony.
That's our last key word for today.
You're right, Nathan.
Friends, let's learn about this last word.
balcony.
balcony.
A balcony is something that is on the outside of the house.
It's usually on the second or third story of a house.
Nathan, have you ever lived in a house that had a balcony?
Well, when I lived in Asia, our houses had many balconies.
Actually, in Asia, sometimes every story has a balcony.
And a balcony usually has bars so that you can't fall off of it.
Balconies are a good place to relax outside.
And we find out a few other things that are good in a dream home.
Mark says that he wants a garage.
Nathan, do you know what a garage is?
Oh, well, sure. It's the place in the house where the cars go.
You park your cars in the garage so that they don't have to stay outside all the
time.
That's right. And Megan's dream home has a huge closet.
The closet is where you keep all your clothes and your shoes in your home.
It's a good idea to have a big closet.
That's true.
But Megan can't buy her dream home now.
She needs more money.
And you know what?
I think that we need to practice our key words.
And now is a great time to do that.
Here's the first key word.
plan.
plan.
Mom plans her day every morning.
like.
like.
What does your dad look like?
story.
story.
The office building has 10 stories.
yard.
yard.
Katie, go play in the yard.
balcony.
balcony.
We have some plants on our balcony.
OK, friends, those are all of today's key words.
I hope that you practiced them with us, and you were able to remember all of
them.
They're important words to know when you're talking about your home or what you
want in your dream home.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we'll be rightback.
