Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
We are here in the LTE TV studio to learn some English with you today.
My name is Nathan, and I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
Our topic for today is still FOOD.
And the title of our lesson is still Let's Bake a Cake!
Let's Bake a Cake!
Katie, do you know how to bake very well?
Uh, well, Nathan, I know how to bake a few things, but I'm not that great at
baking.
I like it, but I should probably take a baking class like Susie did.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I hope that you are ready for today's lesson.
We need to get started.
So find your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
So let's begin!
The students in Susie's baking class made chocolate cookies.
And Megan made a lemon cake for Mark.
But the cake has a problem.
Megan mixed everything well, but she didn't measure some ingredients well.
The cake was really dry after she took it out of the oven.
Another student burned some cookies.
Oh, no!
Uh-oh, well, let's see what happens in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Susie! How was your baking class last night?
Well, it was my first class, so I was nervous.
But it was a good class!
The students learned a lot.
What did they bake?
We made chocolate cookies and...
And a lemon cake for me!
Don't worry. I already know about the cake.
Conversation A starts with today's "Use It!" sentence.
It was my first class, so I was nervous.
It was something, so I was something.
That's right.
It was snowing outside, so I was cold when I walked to class.
Or it was my third time to go to that class, so I was bored.
Try to use it at home, friends.
Now Susie is in a baking class.
Last night they learned a lot.
Katie, what did they bake last night?
Oh, they made chocolate cookies and a lemon cake.
Those are yummy foods.
That is right, Katie. They are yummy.
But let's learn about this key word now.
chocolate.
chocolate.
Chocolate is a kind of food.
It's sweet and the color of chocolate is brown.
Mmm. Chocolate is a great food.
I usually have to have some chocolate every day.
Nathan, do you like chocolate?
Uh, yes, I do like chocolate. I really like dark chocolate.
It isn't as sweet.
Now you can put chocolate in many different things.
You can make chocolate cookies, chocolate cake and chocolate pie, too, I guess.
Or you can have chocolate ice cream or chocolate candy.
You should try something chocolate today, friends.
It's a great food to eat.
That's a great idea.
And we should go to Conversation B right now because there's more to talk about
there.
(Music).
Megan told you about your birthday cake?
Yes, and thanks for helping her!
Well, your cake isn't ready yet.
It's not? What's the problem?
Megan mixed everything together well, but she had a little trouble.
What? Did she forget the sugar?
The lemon?
She didn't measure some of the ingredients well.
Oh, no!
Well, there's a small problem with Mark's cake.
Can you tell us what happened to it, Nathan?
Well, sure.
The cake isn't ready yet because there is a small problem.
Megan mixed everything together, but she didn't measure some of the ingredients
well.
And that does sound like a problem.
But let's look at these key words first.
The first one is:
mix.
mix.
When you mix things, you put them all together until they become one thing.
When you make a cake, you put butter, flour, eggs and everything else that goes
into a cake together.
And then you stir them until it's just one thing.
That's right.
You may have to mix it for a long time until it becomes one thing.
But you can mix other things, too.
You can mix colors.
If you mix red and blue, you get the color purple.
Or if you mix the colors yellow and red, you get the color orange.
And when you mix blue and yellow together, that makes the color green.
Nathan, can you mix anything else?
Hmm, well, you can mix things into your drinks like coffee or tea.
You can mix different tastes, different flavors in with your coffee and make it
taste different.
What are some things that we mix in our coffee, Katie?
Well, I like to mix milk into my coffee.
That makes the coffee not so strong.
So I think it tastes just a little bit better.
Now the cake that Megan made had a problem because she didn't measure some of
the ingredients well.
So let's look at this key word next.
(Music).
measure.
measure.
When you measure something, you see exactly how much of something you have.
When you bake, you have to measure your ingredients so that you have exactly the
right amount.
Right, that is very important.
And ingredients are the things you put into what you're baking or the kind of
food you're making.
So if you're making a cake, your ingredients are eggs, flour, butter and other
things.
You have to measure them before you bake them together.
But you can measure other things, too.
That's right.
You can measure yourself to see how tall you are.
Or you can measure your bedroom to see how big your room is.
So measuring can see how much of something you have or how big something is.
And you can also measure time.
You can see how much time you have to do something.
And we don't have much time now.
So we should move on to Conversation C.
We took the cake out of the oven, and it was really dry.
But don't worry.
We can make another cake before your party.
OK. But I'm sorry about this one.
It's OK!
Megan learned a good lesson.
In baking, be very careful when you measure!
True. Well, she didn't burn it!
That's good!
Yes. But another student burned some cookies.
Oh, well! Your next class will be better!
So we know that Megan did not measure her ingredients well.
But what is the problem with the lemon cake?
Susie says they took the cake out of the oven and it was really dry.
But what do those things mean?
Well, let's learn some key words first.
The first key word to learn is:
oven.
oven.
This word looks like "oven," but you should say oven.
An oven is a machine for baking food.
You put food inside, and you turn the heat on and leave the food in there for
some time.
Maybe an hour or more.
And then you can also put it on high heat, medium heat or low heat.
And then when you take the food out, it has been baked.
The food is ready to eat.
Now you use the oven to bake many things like cakes, cookies, pies or bread.
But watch out, oven gets... ovens get really, really hot.
So, friends, try to be careful if you use an oven.
Don't touch the inside of it.
Now there may not be many ovens in Asia.
But many homes in the United States have ovens and they use them often.
They are very big machines.
But now let's look at our next key word.
dry.
dry.
If something is dry, it is not wet.
And if you bake something for too long in an oven, you say that the food is dry.
And then it is really not very good to eat.
That's right.
When you bake food, you only leave the food in the oven for a certain amount of
time.
You might bake a cake for 45 minutes.
But if you're making cookies, you might only bake those cookies for 20 minutes.
Everything bakes for a different amount of time.
So if you bake something for too long, it might be dry.
And then like Nathan said, it won't taste good.
Sometimes you also cook meat and it can be dry.
If you cook meat for too long, it will dry out.
That is another way to say that something becomes dry.
It dries out. And then you don't want to eat it.
If a cake is dry, it also doesn't taste good.
But Megan learned a good lesson here.
So she will know for next time.
She'll know what not to do the next time she bakes a cake.
Now, friends, when you learn a lesson, you don't always have to be in school.
Sometimes you learn a lesson if you do something wrong.
You will know the next time not to do that same thing again.
And now we have one more key word to learn today.
burn.
burn.
If you burn something, you put it in fire.
We often talk about burning food.
And if you burn food, it becomes too hot, and it can catch on fire.
That's right.
If you burn something when you bake, you leave it in the oven for way too long.
And it can catch on fire when you burn it.
That's right.
And sometimes when food burns, it doesn't have to have fire there, but it
becomes very dry and maybe even hard.
Friends, you know that fire burns, so you have to be careful when you bake and
try not to burn your food.
You can't eat the food if you burn it.
But you can also burn yourself.
We said this earlier, but when you're using the oven, you might burn yourself if
you touch the inside of the oven.
So be careful. You don't want to burn yourself on the oven.
That would hurt.
That's true.
But even though she made some mistakes, Megan didn't burn the cake.
But some students in Susie's class burned the cookies.
I bet they weren't good to eat.
Yeah. I think you're right.
But friends, now it's time to practice today's key words together.
Say them with us.
Here's the first key word.
chocolate.
chocolate.
Would you like some chocolate pie?
mix.
mix.
Mix the onion and corn together.
measure.
measure.
Please measure the sugar.
dry.
dry.
This meat is really dry. It's not good.
oven.
oven.
Cook the meat in the oven for an hour.
burn.
burn.
The oven was too hot so I burned my pie.
Remember those key words, friends.
Right now it's time for a break.
See you again verysoon!
