You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's time to have some fun and learn some English together.
My name is Katie, and we're glad that you joined us today.
Our topic today is FOOD.
And the title of our new lesson is Let's Bake a Cake!
Let's Bake a Cake!
Nathan, do you like to bake cakes?
Hmm.
I think I like to eat them more than I like to bake them.
Hi, everyone, my name is Nathan.
I am so glad to be here with you today.
Now let's get started by opening our LTE magazines and finding today's Let's
Begin reading.
Katie will read this reading with you now.
Let's begin!
Susie can bake many things.
She teaches a baking class.
Megan can cook. But she can't bake.
Megan needs a birthday cake for Mark.
Susie can help her!
She has a good recipe.
What does Megan need for the cake?
She needs flour, sugar, eggs, butter and other things.
Then she can make a yummy cake for Mark!
This will be a delicious lesson, so let's start with conversation A now.
(Music).
Susie, you bake a lot of things.
Yes, I do.
I need a cake!
You can bake one.
No. I can cook. But I can't bake!
I can help you.
You can bake a cake.
No. I can buy a cake from the store.
That's easy!
No. You can make a cake.
That's easy, too!
Mmm, Susie likes to bake.
And that's our first key word for today.
bake.
bake.
When you bake, you make food in an oven.
An oven is something that makes a lot of heat.
It bakes the food.
That's right. You can bake many different things.
You can bake pies, cookies, cakes and other things, too.
And, Katie, where can you buy food that is baked?
Well, that's a good question, Nathan.
Friends, you can find food that you bake in a bakery.
You can see the word "bake" inside the word bakery.
You buy cakes, cookies, pies and other things in a bakery.
Megan can cook. But she can't bake.
Cooking is different from baking.
When you cook, you don't use an oven.
You usually use a stove to cook.
You always use an oven when you bake.
And when you bake something, you need many things.
The first thing you need is a recipe.
A recipe will tell you all the different things that you need to bake a cake.
You need different things to make a cake.
And I think we'll find out what different things that we will need to bake a
cake in Conversation B.
So let's go there together now.
I need the cake for Mark's birthday party.
When is Mark's party?
I didn't know about it.
On Saturday.
What kind of cake does he like?
He really likes lemon cake.
OK. I have a yummy lemon cake recipe.
Good! What do I need for the cake?
Flour, sugar, eggs, lemon... what else?
So why does Megan need a cake?
Because it's Mark's birthday party on Saturday.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
That does sound like fun.
But when you have a birthday party, you need a cake.
You always need cake for someone's birthday.
I guess so.
At least, we usually have cake for birthday parties.
And Mark likes lemon cake, which is good because Susie has a yummy lemon cake
recipe.
A recipe is something that you can look at so you know how to make some kind of
food.
But we have a key word to talk about now.
yummy.
yummy.
If something is yummy, it tastes really, really good.
That's right.
We usually use this word when we are talking about food.
You can say food or something you're eating is yummy if you really, really like
it.
That's right.
I think (blank) is really yummy because (blank).
So, Katie, which food do you think is yummy?
Oh. I think that chocolate cake is yummy because it's so sweet.
Mmhm.
And... and cupcakes are yummy.
And Pizza's yummy.
And... and...
OK. Calm. Calm down, Katie.
Ah, it's... it's great that you think so many different kinds of food are yummy,
but we really need to continue and keep learning our key words for today.
We can talk about yummy foods another time.
OK. Sorry. Sorry, Nathan.
OK. Now, friends, like we said before, you need a lot of things to bake a lemon
cake.
You need flour, you need sugar, and you need eggs and lemon.
Katie, you just used some more key words for today.
So let's look at one.
flour.
flour.
Flour is something you put into baked foods.
That's right. You always use flour to bake things.
Without flour, the cake or cookies or whatever you are making won't be baked
correctly.
Now flour helps whatever you bake be thick.
Without flour, the cake will be too soft and sticky.
So flour is very important.
That's right. Flour is very important when you bake.
But there are other things that are important when you bake something.
We said earlier that you also need sugar, eggs and lemon when you're making a
lemon cake.
So flour is good so that the things you bake are not flat.
They rise.
But we need to talk about something else that is something that you need when
you bake.
And it's a key word.
egg.
egg.
An egg is something that comes from a chicken.
You can eat an egg and they are actually very good for you.
That's right. You also need eggs when you bake something.
And eggs are a great food.
We usually eat eggs with breakfast, but you have to cook them first.
You should never eat an egg without cooking it.
That's really unhealthy.
And it could make you very sick if you eat an egg without cooking it.
Mmhm. But when you use eggs to bake cookies or a cake, you don't cook them.
You mix them in with flour and other things first.
You don't cook them first.
Remember that. That's very important.
But when you bake these things, the eggs will cook inside.
That's right.
So now, friends, you know that you need a lot of different things to make a
cake.
Without these things, the cake won't work.
So before you get started baking, you should probably make a list and write down
everything that you will need to put into the cake.
And actually, there are different kinds of flour and different kinds of eggs.
You need to choose which ones are best.
Now let's find out what else you need in Conversation C.
You need butter and a few other things.
What do I do first?
Come to my baking class.
I can show you there.
Where is your baking class?
The class is at my church!
My first class is tonight.
OK! Why didn't you tell anyone about your class?
I don't know.
Why didn't you tell me about Mark's party?
I don't know!
Another thing that you need when you're baking a cake is butter.
That is our last key word for today.
So let's learn about it.
butter.
butter.
Butter is a kind of food that you usually spread on bread.
That's right. But we also use it when we are baking.
Butter is also important when you bake a cake.
Without butter, the cake just won't work.
That's right. Butter helps to give cakes some flavor.
You can't make a cake without butter.
But we do use butter in other kinds of foods, too.
Like I said earlier, I usually put butter on bread.
That tastes pretty good.
And you can put butter on corn, too.
Butter is really good on hot vegetables.
But we don't usually eat butter by itself.
Now, friends, Susie is in a baking class.
That is where she is learning to bake things.
That's right.
And Susie also uses today's "Use It!" sentence.
Why didn't you tell me about Mark's party?
Why didn't you tell me about (something)?
This is important when you want to know about something that happened.
So let's use it.
Why didn't you tell me about the news?
Why didn't you tell me about the party?
Or why didn't you tell me that it's time to practice our key words?
Here we go.
The first key word is:
bake.
bake.
Gina bakes really good cookies.
flour.
flour.
How much flour do you need for the cake?
egg.
egg.
Faye eats eggs and toast for breakfast.
butter.
butter.
Please put butter on my roll.
yummy.
yummy.
Chinese food is really yummy. I love it!
Now a lot of these words sound yummy today.
There's all kinds of words about food.
So they're important for you to remember.
Right now let's take a break.
Please come back for the end of theshow.
