You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at the LTE studios.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is still NATURE.
And we have part two of our lesson:
Let's Go for a Hike!
Let's Go for a Hike!
Nathan, you will probably need to hike if you do what?
Oh, I think I know the answer to this question.
If you go camping, you will probably need to hike to get to the place that you
will stay.
Hello, friends, my name is Nathan.
I am also your teacher here on the show.
Now it's time to read Let's Begin!
Open up your LTE magazine and find our Let's Begin reading.
You can read it with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Mark and Ken want to go camping on Saturday.
They both love to camp.
Ken will bring his tent.
They will each bring a sleeping bag.
It gets really cold at night in the mountains.
So they will need jackets, thick socks and other warm clothes.
They can also make a fire to keep warm.
Now you know what we will talk about today.
So let's get started in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Ken, I'm excited about our hiking trip on Saturday.
Me, too, Mark!
Did you do much hiking in Texas?
Yes. Every summer I went on a big hiking trip with some friends.
Big? Did you climb a big mountain?
Yes! And we camped in the mountains for a few days.
Fun! I love camping!
Now let's see.
Who was talking about hiking yesterday?
There was Susie and Ken.
They both like hiking a lot.
But there was someone else.
It was Megan. She thought hiking was boring.
But Ken and Susie made it sound interesting.
All of them are going hiking on Saturday.
I guess Mark is going now, too.
I would love to go camping.
I like doing things like that with friends.
Do you do much camping, Nathan?
Well, I used to do a lot of camping, but not as much anymore.
Now, friends, sometimes you want to know if someone does something a lot.
You can ask if they do much something.
So Katie asked me, "Do you do much camping?".
But when you answer, don't say, "Yes, I do much camping." You do a lot of
camping.
But we should finally talk about that big key word for today.
camp.
camp.
When you live outside for a few days, you're camping.
And when you camp, you need to bring some things with you.
You need food, somewhere to sleep and the right clothes.
We'll talk more about some of those things.
But we should talk about another way to use this word.
We say that you make camp at the place that you plan to stay.
All right.
So the place where you sleep and make your food is called your camp.
But we can't camp here in Conversation A.
We have more to learn in Conversation B.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Yes! We should camp on Saturday night!
But will everyone want to camp with us?
Maybe not.
If they don't want to camp, they can drive home Saturday evening.
Good idea.
Do you have a tent?
I do. Four people can sleep in it.
Great. How about a sleeping bag?
Katie, I would like to go camping soon.
We should join them on Saturday night.
It would be a lot of fun if they all go.
Yes, it would be fun if everyone can go.
But "Use It!" sentences are also fun, and Nathan just used one.
We should do something on (blank).
The (blank) is usually a day.
Like: We should go to KTV on Friday night.
But the (blank) could also be a date.
We should have a Christmas party on December 1st.
December 1st? That's too early.
I don't know what you're thinking.
We should have it on December 24th.
Well, that's true.
But I wanted to teach the phrase that you just used: what you're thinking.
Katie wasn't asking a question when she said "what," right, Katie?
No. I meant the things that you were thinking at that time.
Speaking of time, do you know what I'm thinking right now, Nathan?
Well, I think that you're thinking we should hurry and teach our next key word.
tent.
tent.
This is one of the things that you will need when you go camping.
It's something to sleep in.
Tents are usually made of plastic or cloth.
You can stay warmer and safer in a tent.
If there's bad weather, you can stay inside of it.
Tents also have many sizes.
Some are a good size for just two people.
Others can have four people or maybe more.
Now let's talk about some more things for camping in Conversation C.
(Music).
I have a sleeping bag, but only one person can sleep in it.
Me!
I know. I'll bring my own sleeping bag.
Bring thick socks, a jacket and other warm clothes, too.
It's fall, so it gets cold at night in the mountains.
Well, we can make a fire!
A big fire!
This will be a great hiking - and camping - trip!
There are a lot of camping things to talk about in this conversation, so let's
get started.
The first one is a sleeping bag.
Of course, it's a long bag that a person can sleep inside.
Sleeping bags (Chinese) are great for keeping you warm.
They also roll up so that they are easy to take to your camp or to take away.
Some sleeping bags are very small when they're rolled up.
It just depends how thick they are.
Oh, that's a key word.
thick.
thick.
If something is thick, it is big from the front side to the back side.
Now "wide" has a meaning like this, but it's different.
Look at my clipboard.
From side to side is how wide it is, but from front to back is how thick it is.
It is not very thick.
So you can talk about how thick walls or clothes are.
You may think that clothes aren't very thick, but some clothes are much thicker
than others.
That's right. Like my socks.
I have some that are very thick.
They are good for cold days.
But some of my socks are good for hot weather because they are thin.
That's great, Nathan.
But let's talk about what socks are.
It's a key word.
socks.
socks.
Socks are the clothes you wear on your feet.
There can be many different kinds.
Oh, sure.
Socks can have different colors or different styles.
Sometimes you should wear socks that are the same color as your pants.
Other times you might wear other colors.
Like other clothes, socks can be made from different things.
That's what makes some of them thick and others thin.
For camping, it's good to have thick socks if it gets cold outside.
Oh, I have been camping when it was very cold before.
I didn't have the right clothes and it was not fun.
At least bring a jacket, so that doesn't happen to you when you go camping.
Now it's time to look at our last key word for today.
jacket.
jacket.
A jacket is something that you wear outside of your shirt.
It's like a coat, but it's not as long.
Now if you're going camping, you might want a jacket like this to keep you warm
when you go outside.
But there are other kinds of jackets, too.
Other jackets really are just used to make you look nice.
Maybe like this one.
Now that's a lot of things to have when you go camping.
But I think that there's one more thing that would be great to have at your
camp.
Oh. I know it. A campfire.
Well, that would be good.
I like to sit by the campfire when I go camping, but it's not what I'm thinking
about.
You should have these key words, too.
So let's practice them.
The first key word is...
camp.
camp.
We can camp by this lake.
tent.
tent.
When I go camping, I sleep in a tent.
jacket.
jacket.
It's cold today. Wear a jacket.
thick.
thick.
This is a thick coat. It's very warm.
socks.
socks.
My feet are cold. I need some socks.
And I think that you need these key words.
Like Katie said, you can use them if you go camping.
But you can use them other times, too.
They're very useful.
Right now let's take a short break.
Please don't goaway.
