Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
Today we want to learn some English together with you.
My name is Nathan, and I'm very glad to be here with you today.
Today we have a new topic called NATURE.
And our new lesson is called Let's Go for a Hike!
Let's Go for a Hike!
Katie, do you enjoy hiking?
Yeah, Nathan, I really enjoy hiking.
Hiking is a great way to get some exercise.
And when you go to the mountains, you can see so many pretty things.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson for you today.
So let's get started by taking out your LTE magazine and turning to today's
Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken, Susie and Megan can take a trip to the mountains.
They can take pictures of the fall colors.
Ken can bring his camera.
They can have a picnic.
And they can go for a hike.
They can see different birds and animals.
Also, there are great views at the top.
But does Megan like hiking?
There's a lot to learn today.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, Susie. Hi, Megan.
Do you two have plans for Saturday?
No, I don't.
I don't, either.
Great! Then we can take a trip to the mountains.
Good idea.
The mountains are so beautiful in the fall.
We can have a picnic.
We can take pictures of the fall colors.
Yes! I can bring my camera.
When I was in college, I made plans like this.
There were beautiful mountains near us, and it was great to go there on the
weekend.
That sounds really nice, Nathan.
You could ask other people if they wanted to join you.
But before we invite other people, friends, we often ask about their plans for
that weekend.
That's right.
Do you all have plans for the weekend?
You can say "you all" if you are talking to a group.
Or you say "y'all" if you're from Texas.
But if you're talking to two people, you can also say "you two".
Yes, use the numbers if you're talking to just a few people.
Like: Have you three been to the mountains yet this fall?
Now Katie just used our first key word for today.
fall.
fall.
Fall is the season that starts on about September 22nd and ends about December
20th.
The trees change colors at this time.
Fall is such a beautiful season.
I think it's my favorite.
We are in the middle of fall right now.
Next month fall will end and winter will begin.
So, fall looks good but also feels good.
The weather is usually very comfortable.
That makes it a great time to get out your camera.
And that's our next key word.
camera.
camera.
A camera is a machine that takes pictures.
I think almost all of you probably have a camera.
Why?
Because almost all cellphones have cameras now.
And that means many of you probably have two cameras.
You have your phone and maybe a very small camera like this one.
Or you might have a very big camera like this one.
Some cameras are also used for video.
I see three video cameras right now.
One, two and three.
That's right.
We have a lot of cameras right here in the LTE TV studio.
But Ken will take his camera to the mountains.
There are so many great things to take pictures of in the mountains.
You can see lots of things there.
Now let's see what else our friends will do in Conversation B.
(Music).
And we can go for a hike!
A hike?
Do you like hiking, Megan?
No, I don't.
Why not?
I don't climb mountains very often.
There aren't any mountains in Florida.
Do you have hills?
Yes, we have hills.
A mountain is just a big hill.
Hiking is good exercise, Megan.
You like exercise.
Let's get this conversation started with a very important key word.
hike.
hike.
A hike is walking around a park or often in the mountains.
Our lesson is called Let's Go for a Hike!
And "let's go for a hike" has the same meaning as "let's take a hike." But be
careful.
Watch this.
Why don't you take a hike, Katie?
Nathan, I'm helping you teach, and you tell me to take a hike?
Maybe you should take a hike!
I'm staying right here.
See what I mean, friends.
"Take a hike" can also be like saying, "Get out of here." And that's not very
nice.
But that's not what I meant, Katie.
I just wanted to see what you would do.
Sorry.
Hmm. That's OK. Sorry for getting mad.
I don't get angry very often.
Oh, great job, Katie.
You just used our "Use It!" sentence for today.
I don't do something very often.
Like, I don't read very often, or I don't go on hikes very often.
Well, I don't go to the movie theater very often.
And I don't go swimming very often.
But Nathan just said he doesn't go on hikes very often.
Maybe Conversation C will make him want to go there more often.
So let's see.
(Music).
Hiking is boring.
No. Hiking is fun!
You can see a lot of things.
What kind of things?
You can see different birds and animals.
You can see different trees and flowers.
Sometimes you meet interesting people.
And there are great views from the top of the mountain.
OK! Let's go for a hike!
Actually, I really like to go for hikes.
But I wish I could do it some more.
It's not easy when you live in the city.
But we do have some mountains near here.
Yes, I think that's great.
You can't go on hikes all the time, but it's not too hard to go when you want
to.
And there really are some great things to see on mountains.
Oh, sure. There are lots of trees and flowers to look at.
And you might see some animals or birds.
And that is a key word for today.
bird.
bird.
A bird is an animal with wings.
There are many kinds of birds.
And they're very different.
Most birds can fly, like eagles or sparrows.
But a few cannot, like flamingos and penguins.
And some people like to look for birds in the sky.
They want to see as many kinds as they can.
They are called birdwatchers.
Have you ever tried birdwatching, Katie?
Uh, no, Nathan. I haven't.
I think that birds are pretty and I like to, you know, look at them.
But I don't go and try to find birds.
Now birds are often interesting to watch.
And some of them are really pretty.
But there is something else you can see when you go on a hike.
You can see great views.
That's right.
The higher you are on the mountain, the better the view will be.
The best view will be from the top of the mountain.
And let's look at that key word.
top.
top.
The top of something is the highest part of it.
Everything has a top.
This is the top of my head.
This is the top of my clipboard.
And we often talk about what is on top of things.
Yes. Some people wear a hat on top of their heads.
You put food on top of a table when you are going to eat.
And you can go on the top of a mountain.
And when you do go to the top of a mountain, you will see those great views from
the top.
You can also say there are great views at the top of the mountain.
Have you ever been to the top of a mountain, Katie?
Um... I've been to a... yes, I have been to the top of a mountain in Asia.
It took a long time to get to the top.
Maybe three hours.
But the view from the top was incredible.
You could see the whole city.
Mmhm.
And you know, if this lesson is like a mountain, we just got to the top of it.
We have finished all today's conversations.
And now it's time to review key words.
Here is the first key word.
fall.
fall.
Fall is Beth's favorite season.
camera.
camera.
Can you take a picture with my camera?
hike.
hike.
We can go on a hike up the mountain.
bird.
bird.
Look at all the birds in that tree!
top.
top.
My house is at the top of the hill.
All right, friends, those were all of today's key words.
I hope that you remember them and that you practice them with us.
If you like to go hiking, they're great words to know.
So try to use them when you talk about going to the mountains.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we will be right back afterthis.
