You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we have fun learning English together.
My name is Katie.
And we're very glad that you have joined us today.
Our topic is still ACTIVITIES.
And we have part two of our lesson Postcards Are Fun!
Postcards Are Fun!
Now, Nathan, who do you send postcards to?
Well, I have a few friends who really like to get postcards.
So I just send them postcards.
I don't send them to a lot of people.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
I'm glad to learn with you today.
Now let's also read together now from our Let's Begin reading in your LTE
magazine.
Katie will read with you right now.
Let's begin!
Susie and Rob are writing postcards to sick children in the hospital.
Carol wants to help.
She likes to receive postcards, too... from herself!
When she visits a new place, she buys a postcard and sends it to herself.
Her postcard from Egypt is in the shape of a pyramid.
Postcards are cheap and fun gifts.
On your next trip, send yourself a cool postcard!
Try it!
I think a lot of people like postcards.
So let's learn some more about them by starting with Conversation A.
(Music).
Good afternoon, Carol!
We're writing postcards to children in the hospital.
Would you like to write one, too?
Sure! What gave you this idea?
Susie and I were talking about postcards.
We both really enjoy receiving them!
Then I thought, "Postcards cheer me up. They will cheer up sick people in the
hospital, too!" (Music).
In Conversation A, Susie and Rob are writing postcards to children in the
hospital.
And that is our first key word for today.
hospital.
hospital.
The hospital is the place you go when you are really sick or really hurt.
If you're just a little sick, you go to a doctor's office.
That's right.
But if you're really, really sick or if you hurt yourself, you go to the
hospital.
And there are many different parts of a hospital.
There is one part for sick children.
Rob and Susie are writing to children in the hospital.
And we talked about postcards yesterday.
We usually send postcards to friends.
But they are writing to kids.
These short notes are for the sick kids.
And they are writing to these kids because they both really enjoy receiving
them.
Now, Katie, I think that that's another key word.
Thanks, Nathan. Let's take a look.
receive.
receive.
When you receive something, you get it.
Usually someone gives something to you.
Mmhm.
I like to say that I get letters or postcards in the mail.
But you can also say that you receive letters.
And on your birthday, you can receive gifts.
That's right, Nathan.
And you can also receive a prize.
When you win something, you usually receive a prize.
So, Katie, do you receive postcards often?
Ah, actually, I don't get very many postcards.
Since I am usually the one traveling, I'm the one who sends postcards.
But, Nathan, when you receive a postcard, how do you feel?
Well, I don't remember ever receiving a postcard.
I don't think anyone has given me a postcard before.
Friends, if you receive a postcard, that would probably make you feel happy.
And like our conversation says, postcards can cheer you up.
And that is an important phrase to know.
Cheer up.
That's right.
If you cheer someone up, you make them happy.
They were sad and then you made them happy.
That's cheering someone up.
OK.
I think we have something that can cheer you up now.
Conversation B.
Let's go to Conversation B together now and learn some more things there.
(Music).
What a nice idea!
I'd love to write one.
Rob collects postcards.
He has a lot of them.
Really? I collect postcards, too.
That's great! Who are they from?
They're from me!
You send postcards... to yourself?
When I visit a place, I buy a postcard.
Then I mail them to my home address!
I love that idea!
Writing postcards to sick children.
That is a nice idea!
When you say, 'What a nice idea," you mean what a good idea.
That's right. And Rob collects postcards.
He has a lot of them.
Does anyone else collect postcards, Nathan?
Uh, well, actually, yes, Katie.
Carol also collects postcards.
But she doesn't receive them from anyone.
Well, wait, Nathan.
What do you mean?
If you collect postcards, someone has to send them to you.
That's right.
But, actually, Carol sends them to herself.
She visits a place, and then she sends a postcard home.
And that is a key word for today.
place.
place.
A place is somewhere you can visit.
There are many fun places to visit in the world.
That's right.
If someone travels a lot, you can say that they've been to a lot of different
places.
Or you can call a restaurant a place.
You can say that's a great place to eat.
Carol visits places. Maybe a new country.
And then she sends herself a postcard.
What a nice idea!
And Carol uses our "Use It!" sentence.
When I visit a place, I buy a postcard.
So let's use it.
When I visit my mom, I help her cook dinner.
When I learn a language, I talk a lot.
And let's keep learning by going to Conversation C now.
(Music).
A postcard is a cheap and fun gift.
And sometimes I find really cool postcards.
Which one is your favorite?
I have one in the shape of a pyramid!
I bought it in Egypt.
How many postcards do you have?
At least a hundred!
Wow, Carol! You really love to travel!
I do. And I also love postcards!
A postcard is a great gift.
I love to send postcards to people.
And Carol likes postcards, too.
She finds cool postcards to collect.
Well, Nathan, that is our next key word.
Friends, let's learn about this word.
cool.
cool.
If something is cool, it is really great.
If something is cool, people usually like it a lot.
Postcards might be cool because of the pictures on them.
But what else is cool, Katie?
Well, sometimes clothes can be cool.
If clothes are cool, they look nice.
Or a movie can be cool.
You can say that was a cool show.
And maybe technology can be cool, too.
A phone can be cool or games can be cool.
A lot of different things can be cool.
But Carol has a lot of cool postcards.
And her favorite one is in the shape of a pyramid.
Now that is another key word.
shape.
shape.
If something is in the shape of something else, it looks like that thing.
Mmhm, that's right.
Carol's postcard looks like a pyramid.
Now other things can be in shapes, too.
Kids play with blocks that are in different shapes.
So, Katie... hmm, what shape is this?
Well, that is in the shape of a triangle.
It has three sides and that makes a triangle.
Now, friends, sometimes we have items that are in different shapes.
No shape is the same.
Sometimes food can be in different shapes.
I've seen cookies are in the shape of a heart or in the shape of trees like at
Christmas.
Mmhm. But I've never seen a postcard in the shape of a pyramid.
Carol has a cool postcard.
And she has a lot of postcards.
But not all of them are in the shape of a pyramid.
But she has at least a hundred postcards.
That is a lot.
That is a lot of postcards.
I send a lot of postcards, but I definitely do not have that many postcards at
home.
I do have some cool postcards.
And those are the ones that I like to put on my wall.
Friends, it's almost time for us to review our key words.
We learned a lot today.
So practice with us now by saying them as we say the words.
Here's the first one.
hospital.
hospital.
Amy is sick. She is in the hospital.
receive.
receive.
Tim received a gift on his birthday.
place.
place.
How many places did you visit?
shape.
shape.
I made a cake in the shape of a tree.
cool.
cool.
This is a cool game! Everyone loves it.
And I think today's key words are also cool.
You can use them all the time.
They are good words to know.
Now let's take a short break.
Please come back and join us for the rest of theshow.
