This is Let's Talk in English.
We are here to teach you some English and let you have a little fun, too.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your English teachers.
And today we have a new topic for you.
ACTIVITIES.
And our new lesson is called Postcards Are Fun!
Postcards Are Fun!
Katie, do you write a lot of postcards?
Yes, Nathan, I do write a lot of postcards.
Any time I travel, I usually write a postcard home to my mom and dad.
They love to get postcards from me.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson today.
So take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Rob is writing a postcard to his friend in Taipei.
His friend collects postcards from different countries.
Actually, Rob collects postcards, too!
He has a few postcards from abroad.
But most of them are from people in this city.
Fans send postcards to him.
Rob keeps each one.
Well, I think that this will be an interesting lesson.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hi, Rob. What are you writing?
I'm writing a postcard to my friend in Taipei.
He collects postcards from different countries.
Fun! What picture is on the postcard?
It's an old photo of our town.
That's an interesting postcard!
Where did you buy it?
At the bookstore.
They sell a lot of postcards there!
(Music).
In Conversation A, Rob is writing a postcard to his friend in Taipei.
That is today's first key word.
So let's learn about it together.
postcard.
postcard.
A postcard is a card that has a picture on one side, like this.
And on the other side, it has a place where you can write a note to someone.
That's right.
You usually write a postcard when you travel somewhere new.
You can send a postcard back home to a friend.
Nathan, do you write postcards often?
Not really, unless I have a friend that I know really likes postcards.
Most of the time postcards have a picture of a place on one side.
And the picture is usually of something special like a mountain or a cool
building.
That's right.
And Rob's postcard has a picture of their town.
The picture is very old.
Now, Nathan, what does Rob's friend do?
Well, he collects postcards from different countries.
And that is our next key word.
country.
country.
A country is an area of land where people live.
There are many different countries in the world.
That's right.
Usually when you travel to different countries in the world, you send a postcard
home.
But Rob isn't traveling.
He is sending a postcard to his friend because his friend lives in a different
country than he does.
When you travel, it's fun to visit different countries.
Countries usually have different things to see and do.
People speak different languages in some countries.
And the food in different countries is different, too.
That's right.
Traveling to a new country can be so exciting because there are so many
different things to see and eat.
Nathan, have you been to lots of different countries?
I have been to several different countries in Asia.
Maybe five or six altogether.
Now, friends, today we're learning about postcards.
And like we find out, you can usually buy postcards at a bookstore.
That's right.
Most bookstores will have postcards for you to buy.
But if you're traveling, you can buy postcards in other places, too.
You can buy them at an airport or a train station, or maybe even a bus station.
When you travel, there are tons of places to buy a postcard.
Now, Nathan, where do you often buy postcards?
Well, any place that has a store for visitors to a new place have postcards.
It's always good to look there.
Now we have more to learn in Conversation B.
(Music).
Does your friend send postcards to you?
Yes! Actually, I collect postcards, too.
Are they from different countries?
No. Most of them are from this city!
A lot of people watch my show.
Some of them send me postcards!
That's nice of them!
I love mail from fans!
I do, too!
We find out that Rob's friend also sends postcards to him.
And he says, "Actually, I collect postcards, too." Now that is a key word for
today.
So let's look at it.
actually.
actually.
You can use this word to say "in fact" or to say before you say "no" about
something.
Right.
If someone asks me if I like mango, I can say, "Actually, I don't like it." Or
you can use it instead of the word "really." Katie, can you give us an example
of that?
Sure.
Sometimes when I hear about something that has happened, I may say that I want
to find out what actually happened.
I need to know what really happened.
That is a good example.
So in our conversation, when Susie asks if the postcards are from different
countries, Rob says, "No. Most of them are from this city." What could he say
instead, Katie?
Well, Rob could say, "Actually, most of them are from this city." That is
another way that we can use this word.
Now, friends, Rob just said our "Use It!" sentence for today's lesson.
That's right. Let's try to use it.
Most of the drinks are sodas.
Or most of the people are happy.
And most of the teaching for today is finished.
So let's go to Conversation C now to finish everything up.
(Music).
So your postcards are from around here.
Are they all the same?
Not at all!
Many people make the postcards.
I keep each one!
That's really special.
I have a few postcards from abroad, too.
Where are they from?
Well, I have one from France.
Megan mailed it to me!
She mailed one to me, too!
Rob has a lot of postcards.
Many people make them, and he keeps them all.
Now let's learn about that key word.
keep.
keep.
If you keep something, you don't give it away or throw it away.
You keep it for yourself.
That's right.
If you find something on the street, you might keep it.
But if something is not yours, you should not keep it.
You should give it back.
So many people make Rob's postcards.
Like Susie says, that's really special.
They must look nice.
And that is why Rob keeps those postcards.
When someone sends me a card, I always keep it.
I like to put them on my wall and look at the cool pictures.
Now, friends, you may also keep important things.
If you have old tests or old bills, it's important to keep them with you.
You don't want to throw them away.
If you can use something later, you should keep it.
Now Rob's postcards aren't just from the United States.
He has a few postcards from abroad.
And that is our next key word.
abroad.
abroad.
If a place is abroad, it's in another country.
That's right.
A lot of times I travel abroad.
I go to different countries.
Nathan and I also have both lived abroad.
We're from America, but we've lived in a different country.
That is true. We have both lived abroad.
And Rob's postcard is also from abroad.
It is not from the country that he lives in.
Katie, where is it from?
It is from France.
Megan traveled there a couple months ago.
That would be a great country to live abroad in or travel there abroad.
Nathan, do you like to travel abroad?
Oh, yes. I do like to travel abroad to different countries.
You can see new things that you have never seen before when you travel abroad.
Or you could also study abroad.
Learn something in a new place.
How about you, Katie?
Do you like traveling abroad?
Well, yes. I love to travel abroad.
And like Nathan mentioned, I wish I had studied abroad when I was in school.
Sometimes students study abroad, and they go to school in a different country
for six months or one year.
Now think about that question, friends.
Would you like to study or travel abroad?
But right now, let's take some time to review today's key words.
Say them with us.
Here is the first key word.
postcard.
postcard.
Please mail me a postcard!
country.
country.
What country is Steve from?
actually.
actually.
Actually, I don't like fish at all.
abroad.
abroad.
Many students here are from abroad.
keep.
keep.
I keep all of my old tests.
Friends, those are all of today's key words.
Did you remember them?
I hope that you did.
They are very important.
We're going to take a short break right now.
But don't worry, we'll be right back.
