You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is still HEALTH.
And we have a new lesson for you called Your Teeth and Your Health.
Your Teeth and Your Health.
Now, Nathan, how often do you go to the dentist?
Well, if I don't have any problems with my teeth, I probably go about once a
year.
Maybe I should go more often.
My name is Nathan, everyone.
It is great to be here with you all today to learn some English and have some
fun.
Well, friends, we have a lot of important things to talk about.
Your health is very important.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Today we are going to talk about your health and your teeth.
Please help me welcome my guest, Dr. Tom Teeth.
Welcome, Tom.
Thank you for being on our show today.
You're welcome, Rob.
Taking care of your teeth is a pretty important subject.
Yes, it is.
Do you have any tips for us?
Yes, I do.
You should brush your teeth twice a day.
You should floss daily, too.
Those things help fight gum disease.
How often do you need to get a new toothbrush?
Three or four times a year.
We're getting some great information from Rob's guest today.
Tom Teeth knows a lot about what we need to do to keep our mouths clean and
healthy.
He does know a lot.
I wonder if he is a dentist.
Dentists know a lot about taking care of teeth, so maybe he is.
I'm not sure if he is a dentist, but I'm sure that you just used a key word
phrase.
Friends, let's look at it.
take care of.
take care of.
If you take care of something, you make sure that bad things don't happen to it.
Mmhm. Parents need to take care of their children.
They need to keep them safe and give them the things that they need.
And if you have any pets, you need to take care of them, too.
They need food, water and a place to sleep.
But we all need to take care of our bodies.
We should eat things that our body needs, drink enough water and get some
exercise.
And our teeth are part of our body.
One of our key words today is very important for taking care of our teeth.
toothbrush.
toothbrush.
You use a toothbrush to clean your teeth.
I'm sure you know how to brush your own teeth.
But did you know you can buy different kinds of toothbrushes?
There are hard ones and soft ones.
Hard and soft?
I don't think I've seen any soft toothbrushes.
Well, I mean one part of the toothbrush.
This part is hard or soft.
So get the kind that is better for you.
And you should use it at least twice a day.
You should also use today's "Use It!" sentence for practice, like Nathan just
did.
You should do something (blank) a (blank).
You should sleep eight hours a night.
This is a great sentence for talking about time.
Like: You should shower once a day.
But now let's move on to Conversation B.
There's a lot more to learn there.
Does the health of your teeth and gums affect your whole body?
Yes. If you keep your mouth clean, bacteria can't grow well.
Is bacteria in your mouth bad?
Yes! The bacteria in your mouth gets into your blood and moves around your body.
Those bacteria can cause other health problems.
They can?
Yes. They can cause heart disease, for example.
Uh-oh! I'll remember to brush my teeth.
And floss, too!
Do you remember our topic for this lesson, friends?
Well, it's also a key word for today.
health.
health.
Health is how well your body is doing.
If you have no problems, you have good health.
Some people have problems with their body for a long time.
We say they have bad health.
Of course, all people get sick, but that doesn't mean that they all have bad
health.
Oh, no. If you get sick, you will probably get better soon.
You just aren't healthy for a little while.
And healthy is an adjective that uses our key word.
If you are healthy, you are in good health for now.
Both words are good to know.
You can also talk about the health of one part of your body, like the teeth.
When we talk about health, we often think about the whole body.
Oh, let's look at another key word.
whole.
whole.
If something is whole, none of it is gone.
The whole body is all parts of the body.
None of its parts are left out.
You can use this word for all kinds of things.
Maybe your whole school is taking tests right now.
Or we can say, "The whole store is clothes." They only sell clothes.
Hey, Nathan, can you eat a whole pizza?
Oh. A whole pizza?
No, I... I can't eat the whole thing.
That would be too much.
I would be sick.
Hey, Katie, can you drink a whole bottle of soda?
Yeah. I think so. That's not too much.
OK. Here you go.
Uh, whoa, uh, that's a really big bottle.
I thought you were talking about the smaller ones.
It's not healthy to drink that much soda.
Well, you're right.
When I was little, people told me that kids would not grow well if they drank
too much soda.
Now let's look at that last key word.
grow.
grow.
If something grows, it gets bigger.
Kids usually keep growing until they are in high school or college.
Every kid grows differently, though.
And you know, I've heard that your ears and your nose never stop growing.
They keep growing your whole life.
Bad things like bacteria can also grow in your body if you don't take care of
your body.
If those things grow, they can make problems.
And they can make you sick, which means that you are unhealthy.
Now let's review all of this information with this week's Read It!
Do you want to take good care of your teeth?
Here are some tips:
Brush twice a day and floss daily.
This will help fight gum disease.
Get a new toothbrush three to four times a year.
The health of your teeth and gums affects your whole body.
Bacteria grow in your mouth and can get into your blood.
The bacteria then move around your whole body.
They can cause heart disease and other health problems.
Look at all of this information.
We hope that you remember these health tips.
But we also want to give you some English tips.
Mmhm.
First, we see a new way to use a key word phrase.
We talked about "take care of" before, but we see "take good care of" here.
It really means the same thing.
But "good" makes the idea stronger.
Next, Read It tells us some ways to fight gum disease.
We talked about gums yesterday, remember?
Your teeth grow out of your gums.
But when we talk about sickness in your gums, we say gum disease with no S.
When a noun like gums becomes an adjective, you do not add the S.
We often say "legs," but when you want to get ready for a race, you do "leg"
stretches, no S.
And there's another word in Read It without an S that seems strange, too.
Where is it, Nathan?
Bacteria is the word that you mean.
We do not say bacterias.
Bacteria is already plural.
We've learned a lot of great words today, so let's practice them together in our
key word review.
Here's the first one.
take care of.
take care of.
Take care of yourself and eat right.
toothbrush.
toothbrush.
Brush your teeth with this toothbrush.
health.
health.
Max is in very good health.
whole.
whole.
Tim ate a whole pizza for lunch!
grow.
grow.
Apples grow on trees.
Those are all of today's key words.
Did you remember all of them?
Now it's time for a break.
Please don't goaway.
