Hello, friends.
Thank you for joining us here on Let's Talk in English.
We are glad to be here to learn with you.
My name is Nathan.
And I'm very glad to be teaching you today on the show.
We have a new topic today called HEALTH.
And our lesson is called Time to See the Dentist.
Time to See the Dentist.
Don't you love to see the dentist, Katie?
Uh... actually, Nathan, I do not love to see the dentist.
A dentist is a kind of doctor, and I really...
I just don't like going. But...
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson.
So let's get ready for it.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Megan has a dentist appointment this afternoon.
The dentist will check her teeth and mouth.
Her teeth feel great after the dentist cleans them.
Mark doesn't like the dentist.
His teeth and gums hurt after he sees the dentist.
He doesn't like pain.
He brushes his teeth every day.
But he doesn't always floss them because he is lazy.
Well, I think that we have a lot of interesting things to learn today.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Megan, you look happy today.
What's going on?
Not much.
I'm going to the dentist this afternoon.
And you're happy about that?
Sure! I like to go to the dentist.
My teeth feel great after he cleans them.
Really?
My teeth always hurt after the dentist cleans them.
How often do you go to the dentist?
Oh, once every few years.
Many of you can probably guess what a dentist is now.
But it's our first key word today, so let's take a look at it.
dentist.
dentist.
A dentist is a doctor for your teeth.
We use different words for different kinds of doctors.
But this is a very common one.
We often just say "doctor" for many other kinds of doctors, but not for
dentists.
And some people get nervous when they need to go to the dentist.
Katie, do you think more people are like Mark or like Megan?
Ah, I think more people are like Mark.
Most people don't really like to see the dentist.
They think it's uncomfortable and maybe a little scary.
What do you think?
Well, I think it is uncomfortable, but I know that it's good to see the dentist.
I should probably go more often.
Well, a dentist can help you in many ways.
If you have a problem with your teeth, they can help you fix it or they can just
clean your teeth.
That's great, too.
That is great.
And you used a key word.
clean.
clean.
When you clean something, you take away all the bad things that make something
dirty.
So how do dentists clean teeth, Katie?
Well, dentists have a lot of different tools for cleaning teeth.
They need different things to clean different parts of your teeth.
You're right.
And some of those tools are a little scary.
But dentists are very careful when they make your mouth clean.
Katie, did you just hear what I said?
Well, yes. I'm right here.
It's not hard to hear you.
You said that dentists are very careful when they make your teeth clean.
Hey, you used clean as an adjective.
That's what I meant.
Clean can be an adjective.
Your house is very clean.
Or it can be a verb.
How often do you clean your house?
And that's a "Use It!" sentence.
How often do you do something?
Like, how often do you go to the movies?
Or how often do you practice English?
Good question.
But let's learn some more English now with Conversation B.
(Music).
You should go to the dentist every six months.
Ha...
Did you talk to my mother?
She says that!
Well, you should go twice a year.
A dentist needs to check your teeth.
I know. But I don't like pain.
My teeth and gums hurt after I see the dentist.
Because you don't see one often enough.
But I do brush my teeth every day.
I hope that all of you brush your teeth every day.
You need to keep your teeth clean and healthy.
If you go to the dentist every six months, he can help you do that, too.
In English you can say, "Go to the dentist" or "See the dentist." They both mean
that you let the dentist check your teeth.
You can also use those phrases for doctors, too.
Thanks for that help, Nathan.
And thank you for using a key word.
Friends, let's look at it.
check.
check.
When you check something, you look at it to see if anything is wrong.
A dentist needs to check your teeth to see if there are any problems that you
need help with.
Other doctors check other parts of your body.
Your teachers also check your homework.
They want to make sure that you're doing everything the right way.
Sometimes we help students by checking their English.
We want you to say things and write things correctly.
Also, if something is wrong, it's good to have someone check to see if something
is wrong with it, like when you feel pain.
Now let's look at that next key word.
pain.
pain.
Pain is a feeling that you get when you are hurting.
And sometimes you might have pain in one of your teeth.
Then you should go to the dentist.
If you have pain somewhere else, go to a different doctor.
You can have pain in your body.
But we can also say that you feel pain when something sad happens to you.
Sometimes that kind of pain hurts much more than pain in your body.
Yeah, that's true.
But Mark doesn't go to the dentist when he feels pain.
He feels pain after he goes to the dentist.
His teeth and gums hurt.
Now you all know what teeth are.
But what are gums?
Your teeth come out of your gums.
Your gums are usually pink.
And doctors also check your gums.
They want to make sure that they are not sick or hurting.
OK. Now, friends, it's time to see what happens in Conversation C.
(Music).
Do you floss them, too?
Sometimes.
You should floss every day, too.
I know, I know. I'm just lazy.
Well, it's your mouth.
OK. What's the name of your dentist?
Dr. Johnson. He's really good.
Do you have his phone number?
I'll call and make an appointment.
Good! Then your mother will be happy!
(Background Noise).
Mark is going to see Megan's dentist!
I guess she showed him that it really is important.
He needs to do more than just brush and floss.
Well, we all should.
Let's talk a little about flossing.
You can floss with one of these every day.
They can clean between your teeth.
Some people also just use string to floss.
You can use either one.
I try to floss, but sometimes I'm lazy and forget to floss.
And I used another key word.
lazy.
lazy.
If someone is lazy, they don't want to do things that they need to do.
Sometimes people are lazy because the things they need to do are not fun.
We are all probably lazy sometimes.
Nathan, are you ever lazy?
Well, I have to say yes.
Sometimes when I'm tired, I really don't want to go exercise, even though I
should.
If I don't go, I'm really being lazy.
That's a good example.
And sometimes we are lazy about very easy jobs, too.
That's not good.
It doesn't take long to clean our mouths, but sometimes we're lazy about that.
And Katie just used our last key word for today.
And it's a very important one.
mouth.
mouth.
We have a big mouth right here.
Nathan, that's not nice.
I don't talk that much.
No, no, Katie, no. I... I... I don't mean you.
I just mean this.
Oh, sorry. I see.
Friends, don't call anyone a big mouth.
That means that they never stop talking.
Mouths are made for talking, but don't talk too much.
Mouths are also made for eating, but don't eat too much, either.
And mouths are also made for breathing, but don't breathe...
Oh, no. You can breathe as much as you want.
Yes. Please keep breathing, friends.
That's quite important.
OK. Now it's time to use our mouths together as we practice today's key words.
You learned a lot.
So please say them with us.
And here is our first key word.
dentist.
dentist.
The dentist looked at my teeth.
check.
check.
The doctor will check your heart.
mouth.
mouth.
The boy put candy in his mouth.
clean.
clean.
Please clean your room.
pain.
pain.
I felt a lot of pain after I exercised.
lazy.
lazy.
Ben is lazy. He doesn't study hard.
OK, friends, those are all of your key words.
We hope that you remember them.
We're going to take a short break right now.
But we'll be rightback.
