You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're excited to be here with you today.
Our topic is still TRAVEL.
But we have a new lesson and it's called High Speed Trains.
High Speed Trains.
Nathan, how much do you use the high speed train here?
Well, I use high speed trains maybe once a month.
I use it pretty often.
Hi, friends, my name is Nathan.
It's very good to be with you today.
Right now we want to read Let's Begin with you.
You can find our Let's Begin reading in your LTE magazine.
And today Katie will read it with you.
Let's begin!
High speed trains are a great way to travel.
They are very fast.
The train stations are modern and look like airports.
Rob rode a high speed train in Taiwan.
The cost of the ticket depends on the distance you travel.
There can be a big difference!
But taking the train is still cheaper than flying!
Let's learn some new things about high speed trains starting in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Have you ever been on a high speed train?
They are fast and convenient.
And here to tell us all about them is my special guest, Mr. Hugh S. Train!
Welcome to the show, Mr. Train.
Thank you, Rob.
I love talking about trains!
Can you tell us about high speed trains?
Sure, Rob.
High speed trains are a great way to travel.
They are fast and comfortable!
How fast do high speed trains go?
The fastest high speed train in China can go 311 miles per hour.
Wow. That is really fast!
I don't think I've been on such a fast train before.
Have you, Nathan?
No, not me.
I have been on high speed trains many times, but not one that fast.
I know!
Now high speed trains are very important today.
Our lesson is called High Speed Trains.
But we have two key words to talk about right there.
The first is...
high.
high.
This word can be used in different ways.
We're using it for numbers today.
That's right.
High numbers are big numbers.
So 4 is probably not a high number.
500 is a high number.
But numbers can mean different things.
For example, we can use numbers to say how hot it is.
For that, 10 is not a high number, but 40 is already very high.
But we're not talking about how hot things are today.
We want to use numbers to show speed.
Right. And that's our next key word.
speed.
speed.
This is how fast something is.
You can say that something is high speed, which just means it is very fast.
So high speed trains are much faster than regular trains.
In most of the world, kilometers are used to show how fast something is.
40 kilometers is not a high number, but 140 kilometers is.
Wow. If your speed is that high when you're driving, the police might try to
catch you.
You need to be careful about your speed when you drive.
Yes. You can see signs to show you how fast you can drive.
Cars often change their speed, but trains do not.
Trains stay the same speed.
And the fastest high speed train in China can go 311 miles per hour.
We use miles to say how fast things are.
311 miles per hour means that the train moves 311 miles in one hour.
Now let's learn some more interesting things in Conversation B.
(Music).
High speed train stations are also very modern.
They are!
They look like airports!
Yes. The stations are usually bigger than older train stations, too.
Many places around the world have high speed trains, right?
Yes. France, Russia and South Korea have high speed trains.
Japan has a high speed train, too.
It does.
Japan has a great high speed train system.
I have only ridden on one high speed train system.
Have you ever ridden on one, Katie?
No, Nathan, I've never ridden on a high speed train.
But I want to someday.
But there are many high speed trains in many places now.
The first high speed train system opened in Japan back in 1964.
That's just about 50 years ago.
That must be why high speed train stations are so modern.
Let's look at that key word together, friends.
modern.
modern.
If something is modern, it is new or from the last few years.
We can use this word to talk about buildings.
Some buildings or places look very old.
Modern buildings are built in different ways.
They look different, too.
This is also true about art.
There are some very old art paintings, and there are modern art paintings, too.
They look very different.
Now think about the train stations you have seen.
Then think about the high speed train stations that you've seen.
They probably look very different.
Yes, they do.
They make me think of airports.
And that is our next key word.
airport.
airport.
You go to an airport to ride an airplane.
Airports are not that old, either.
Katie, do you think airports or high speed train systems are newer?
Well, if the first high speed train started traveling in 1964, they must be
newer.
I know airports open before that.
And I think there are more airports in the world, too.
Many places around the world have airports, right?
That is right.
Many places have airports.
Now it's time for us to go to Conversation C.
(Music).
I've ridden a high speed train from Taipei!
It can be expensive.
The cost of the ticket depends on the distance you travel.
Sure.
If the distance is far, it is more expensive.
If the distance isn't as far, it is cheaper.
So there can be a big difference in cost.
Yes. But taking the train is still cheaper than flying!
If you want to ride a high speed train, you should think about two things.
Time and money.
The high speed train is faster, but it's more expensive.
That's right.
Maybe you could take a bus or the normal train.
Do you want to use less time or less money?
Distance is very important for this question.
So let's look at what that key word means.
distance.
distance.
Distance is how far something is.
You can use miles or kilometers to tell people a distance.
Like this:
The distance from my house to the airport is 40 kilometers.
That's not a very long distance.
We often say that a distance is long or short.
But you can also say that a distance is far or near.
When you're driving, signs will show you the name of a few places with a number
next to them.
The number is the distance to those places.
But when you travel a long distance, you will have to pay more.
But there are many ways to travel, and there is a difference in cost between
those ways.
And there's one more key word for today.
difference.
difference.
Difference is how things are not the same.
It sounds like the word different.
You might know that word.
I think they do.
If two things are not the same, you can say they are different.
But if you want to say how they are not the same, you need to use the word
difference.
So if the bus will cost $250 and the train will cost $700, what is the
difference?
The difference in cost is $450.
Difference is a great key word.
But let's review all of today's key words now.
Here's the first key word.
high.
high.
Driving at a high speed is dangerous.
speed.
speed.
The car is moving at a speed of 60 mph.
modern.
modern.
That furniture is very modern.
airport.
airport.
Heathrow Airport is in London.
distance.
distance.
The distance to that store is two miles.
difference.
difference.
The difference between 10 and 11 is one.
OK, friends, now it's time for a break.
Please comeback.
