You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's time to learn some English and have some fun learning together.
My name is Katie.
And we're glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is TRAVEL.
And the title of our new lesson is A Ride on the Train.
A Ride on the Train.
Nathan, have you ridden on a train before?
Yes, I have ridden on trains many times.
They can be fun to ride.
Hello, everyone, my name is Nathan.
And I'm your other teacher here on the show.
Right now let's read our Let's Begin reading together.
You can find it in your magazine, and Katie will read it with you.
Let's begin!
Carol is reading an email from Joe.
He can ride the train home for Thanksgiving.
He can avoid traffic.
The seats are comfortable on a train.
He can sleep or read.
Carol likes trains.
She is not a great driver.
She can't get lost on a train!
This should be an interesting day.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Carol. What are you reading?
Hi, Megan. Hi, Ken.
I'm reading an email from Joe.
Oh. What does it say?
He loves New York!
He really enjoys his job, too.
That's great.
Thanksgiving is almost here.
Will he go home?
Yes. His family lives far from New York.
He can ride the train home.
Today Carol got an email from Joe in New York.
Joe? Who is Joe?
Do you remember someone called Joe at LTE TV?
Well, of course, Katie, don't you?
He was a... an ad space salesman, remember?
And he was a really good guy, too.
Well, he had brown hair, very handsome.
No?
Well, he was only at LTE TV for... like 6 months.
Oh. Well, that must be why I don't remember him.
Oh, wait, I do remember Joe.
Yes. He was a hard worker and lived with Ken for a while.
But he wasn't that handsome.
Oh. Um, well, anyway...
Joe just wanted to tell Carol how he is doing.
And he also talked about going home for Thanksgiving.
Many people do that in the United States.
Well, let's talk about that key word.
Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving.
This is a holiday in the United States when we think about the things that we're
thankful for.
We are very glad to have them.
This was started when people first moved from England to the United States.
They were very thankful to God for helping them make a new home there.
So most Americans spend this holiday with their families.
But that... that often means that many people will travel to do that.
Did you travel home for Thanksgiving, Nathan?
Well, actually, my family always leaves home to visit friends for Thanksgiving.
I always enjoy doing that.
And now Thanksgiving is almost here.
Well, great job, Nathan.
That is a "Use It!" sentence.
Something is almost here.
We can use this for time, like:
December is almost here.
Or 2014 is almost here.
But you can also use it for people or things that are coming.
My friend is almost here.
The pizza is almost here.
The train is almost here.
And some people in the United States will ride the train to go home.
Key word time.
ride.
ride.
When you ride something, you sit or stand in it or on it to go somewhere.
So when you ride in a train, you sit in the train while it takes you somewhere.
But you could also ride a horse.
You could sit on the horse, and you can move the horse where you want to go.
Usually if you're traveling in or on something that moves, say "ride." Don't say
"sit." We ride the train.
OK, friends, it's time for us to move on to Conversation B and see why Joe is
riding the train home.
(Music).
That's a good idea.
He can avoid the traffic!
He can do a lot of other things on the train, too!
That's right.
He can sleep!
The seats are comfortable on a train.
I sleep on the train sometimes.
I read on the train.
One time I even finished two books!
Those are some good reasons to travel by train.
If you do, you can avoid traffic.
Avoid means to stay away from something.
You can't do that if you drive a car.
No. If you drive a car, you're part of the traffic.
You can avoid traffic on the train because trains don't usually make other
trains slower, but sometimes cars do.
And when you drive, you always need to pay attention to other cars.
You can't avoid that.
But on a train you can do other things like read or sleep.
Yes, the seats on the trains are good for sleeping.
Everyone has their own seat, and they're often very comfortable.
But sometimes...
No more, Katie. No more.
You already used two key words.
Now we need to talk about the first one.
seat.
seat.
A seat is a place to sit.
So a seat is usually a chair, but not always.
There are many seats on trains, buses and planes.
We sometimes say that you need to buy a seat or get a seat when you travel.
You also need a seat when you go to a theater or to most concerts.
You always hope that you can get good seats so that you can see everything well.
Smaller things also have seats.
Most cars have about five seats.
Bigger cars might have more.
Seats in cars aren't always as comfortable as train seats, though.
And there's the next key word again.
comfortable.
comfortable.
If something is comfortable, it feels good to you.
Comfortable seats feel good to sit on.
Comfortable clothes feel good to wear.
And it's very important to have comfortable shoes that feel good on your feet.
You don't want your shoes to hurt your feet.
So many different things can be comfortable.
But sometimes we say that we are comfortable.
Maybe it means we're relaxing in a nice chair.
But it can also mean that we feel good about doing something.
Some of you feel comfortable talking in front of many people, but some do not.
I am not always comfortable talking in front of people.
Now I know that we've talked about all of our key words for this conversation.
So right now I'm comfortable with going to Conversation C.
(Music).
I also like the train for another reason.
What reason?
I'm not a great driver.
Sometimes I get lost.
But you can't get lost on a train!
Yes. But I can get off the train and get lost.
Sometimes I walk for hours!
Look at a map!
Or ask someone for directions.
OK, OK.
Ken, like many men, doesn't want to ask for directions when he gets lost.
I think he wants to find things by himself, but that can be hard to do.
When you're in a new place, it can be easy to get lost.
When you don't know where to go, we say that you are lost.
If you were lost before, you should say that you got lost.
And if you want someone to be careful, you tell them, "Don't get lost.".
If you are driving your own car or if you're walking, you can get lost.
But a train driver always knows where he is going.
You just need to know where to get off.
That is very good to remember.
And so is this key word.
driver.
driver.
A driver is just someone who drives.
We usually only use this word for people who drive things with wheels.
That's right. You can be a car driver, a taxi driver or a bus driver.
But there are other words for train drivers, plane drivers or boat drivers.
Some people are good drivers and some are bad.
If you are a good driver, you know how to use your car well.
But you also need to know how to use your key words well.
So let's do some review right now.
Here's the first one.
ride.
ride.
I ride the train to work.
Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving.
I see my family on Thanksgiving.
seat.
seat.
My seat is on the left.
comfortable.
comfortable.
This bed is very comfortable.
driver.
driver.
Where is the driver of this car?
Those are all of our key words for today.
Did you remember them, friends?
Please try to use them.
But right now it's time for a break.
Please join us for the rest of theshow.
