It's time for Let's Talk in English.
Let's have some fun and learn some English at the same time.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on the show.
Today's topic is still SMALL TALK, and the title of our lesson is How Many?
How Many?
How many things do you think we'll talk about today, Katie?
Well, Nathan, that is a great question.
Honestly, I'm not sure how many things that we will talk about.
But I am sure that everything we talk about will be very interesting.
Hi, friends, my name is Katie, and I am very excited to be here today.
And I'm also excited about today's lesson.
So we need to get started.
Take out your Let's Talk in English magazine, and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it there, or read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Mark is looking at pictures on the Internet.
He shows Susie a big pig.
The pig weighs 726 kilograms.
Then he shows her a very small horse.
The horse is only 43 centimeters tall.
That is 17 inches.
Susie wants to go to lunch.
Mark is very hungry, but a hamburger or two will satisfy him!
Well, it looks like this will be a great lesson.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Mark.
What are you doing?
I'm looking at interesting pictures on the Internet.
Can I see?
Sure!
Like this pig!
Look how fat he is!
He must weigh a ton!
He doesn't weigh a ton.
He weighs 726 kilograms.
How do you know?
It says that next to the picture.
Oh.
How many pounds is that?
I'm not sure.
But it's a lot!
Mark is looking at interesting pictures on the Internet.
The first picture he's looking at is a picture of a pig.
And that is today's first key word.
pig.
pig.
A pig is a farm animal.
They are usually very fat and heavy.
And that's why Mark says he must weigh a ton.
Now, a ton is the same as 2,000 pounds.
Pigs don't actually weigh a ton.
But they are very heavy.
So that is why Mark says that.
Pigs live on farms.
Pork comes from pigs.
So how much does the pig weigh, Katie?
Well, like our conversation says, he weighs 726 kilograms.
Nathan, I think that is our next key word.
You're right.
Friends, let's learn about this word.
kilogram.
kilogram.
A kilogram is also a weight.
It is a way to figure out how much something weighs.
That's right.
In Asia, when you're trying to figure out how much you weigh, you might say that
you weigh a certain number of kilograms.
And when you use this word, you can shorten it and say kilo instead of kilogram.
Kilo is short for kilogram.
Both words can work.
That's right.
So a pig weighs 726 kilograms, or 726 kilos.
Both can work there.
Friends, we've talked about the word "pounds" before.
In our conversation, Mark asks, "How many pounds is that?" If you changed 726
kilos to pounds, how many pounds would there be?
Oh, well, that is a great question.
I don't know the answer to that question.
But I do know that in Conversation B, we will find out how many pounds 726
kilograms is.
So let's go there now.
(Music).
I can look it up.
Hmmm... one kilo is 2.2 pounds.
Then the pig weighs about...
1,600 pounds.
That's almost a ton.
Not really.
But it is a very big pig!
Now look at this really small animal.
It's a horse!
The smallest horse in the world!
He's only 43 centimeters tall.
How many inches is that?
I'm not sure.
But he's pretty short!
(Music).
Well, Mark can look the answer up.
Friends, we look things up when we want to learn more about something.
Nathan, do you know where we can look things up?
Hmm...
Well, a good place to look things up is the Internet, Katie.
The Internet has a lot of good information when you need to look things up.
That's right, Nathan.
Now we find out that one kilo is 2.2 pounds.
Friends, when you read this conversation, you see the number "2.2." We say "two
point two," not "two period two." That's very important to know.
Right.
So one kilo is 2.2 pounds.
The pig weighs 726 kilos.
So that's almost 1,600 pounds.
And Mark says, "That's almost a ton." Remember, one ton is 2,000 pounds.
So 1,600 pounds is a big pig.
But then our friends look at another picture.
They look at a picture of a small animal.
It's a picture of the smallest horse in the world.
He is only 43 centimeters tall.
And Katie, I think that's our next key word.
Well, friends, let's learn about it.
centimeter.
centimeter.
A centimeter is a length.
You use a centimeter to measure things, and they are very small.
That's right.
You use a centimeter when you want to measure small things.
And that's why the small horse is only measured in centimeters.
But in Asia, people are also often measured in centimeters.
And we have an important question next.
Mark asks, "How many inches is that?" And that is the next key word.
inch.
inch.
An inch is another way to measure things.
It is bigger than a centimeter.
We usually use inches in the United States.
And we call 12 inches a foot.
And in our next conversation, we'll find out how many centimeters there are in
one inch.
So let's go there now.
I'll look it up.
Let's see, one inch is 2.54 centimeters.
So that horse is about 17 inches tall.
That's really small!
Well, it's lunchtime.
Let's get something to eat.
Yes!
I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!
Not that horse!
How about a hamburger?
Will that satisfy you?
Sure!
But I could eat 10 hamburgers!
Really?
OK, maybe just two!
There are 2.54 centimeters in one inch.
So that means the horse is about 17 inches tall.
Wow, for a horse, that's so little!
I guess it's a miniature horse.
Now, later, Mark uses our "Use It!" sentence.
I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.
Let's use it!
I'm so tired I could sleep for a week.
Or I am so happy I could cry.
People say that a lot.
Now friends, try to use this "Use It!" sentence today.
Now, Susie asks if Mark wants a hamburger.
She says, "Will that satisfy you?" And that is another key word.
satisfy.
satisfy.
If something satisfies you, it makes you feel good.
When you eat, that satisfies you because it makes you not hungry anymore.
That's right.
Sometimes people will ask if you were satisfied with a restaurant or store.
They want to know if you were happy with it.
That's right.
And now friends, it's time to practice our key words together.
Here is the first key word.
pig.
pig.
That farm has pigs and cows.
kilogram.
kilogram.
The boy weighs 30 kilograms.
centimeter.
centimeter.
Jeff is 120 centimeters tall.
inch.
inch.
This sofa is 60 inches long.
satisfy.
satisfy.
Two or three cookies will satisfy Alan.
Friends, those are all of today's key words.
Make sure that you practice them at home.
They are very helpful for you.
Right now, we're going to take a short break.
But don't go away.
We will be rightback.
