You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And we're glad that you joined us today.
Our new topic is WEATHER.
And we have a new lesson for you called What a Storm!
What a Storm!
Nathan, do you enjoy storms?
Well, I like to watch storms sometimes, but they are not fun to be in.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
Now it's time to open up your Let's Talk in English magazine and find today's
Let's Begin reading.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
There is a bad storm outside.
It is raining.
There is a lot of wind, too.
Carol is worried about floods.
She lives near the river.
Susie isn't worried.
She lives on a hill.
But she is worried about tornadoes.
Rob isn't worried.
There is a safe place for them in the TV station building.
That does not sound like a good storm.
Let's find out some more in Conversation A.
(Music).
Wow, what a storm!
Do you hear the wind?
Yes! The weather is really bad today!
It is. It rained all day yesterday.
It's raining again today!
And it will rain tomorrow.
I'm worried about all the rain.
Why?
There may be floods.
That's true.
Floods are dangerous.
Yes. People sometimes die in floods.
Bad weather can be very scary.
It can come and go really quickly, too.
Sometimes it looks beautiful outside.
And then I look outside and say: What a dark sky!
Yes. Weather can change very suddenly.
Katie, what you said is a lot like our lesson title:
What a Storm!
You can say what a something.
We say this when what we see is amazing.
Yes. I was amazed because the sky was so dark.
It looked fine a few minutes ago.
But then it looks like a storm is coming.
Now what a great key word!
That's a good one to start with today.
storm.
storm.
When there is bad weather with hard rain and strong wind, we call it a storm.
And other things can happen during a storm, like... like loud sounds called
thunder.
Wow. And... and sometimes there is a very bright light in the sky during storms,
too.
That's right. You can also have a storm when it is snowing.
That's called a snowstorm.
Or when the wind is very strong, we can call it a windstorm.
That's true.
We often add another word before "storm" to say what kind of storm it is.
So, you can also say thunderstorm or you can say rainstorm.
Oh. And Nathan, you reminded me of another important key word.
Friends, let's look at this one.
rain.
rain.
When it rains, water falls from the sky.
I'm sure you have seen this happen many times.
This is a very common kind of weather in many parts of the world.
Sometimes it only rains a few minutes, but it can rain a very long time, too.
Now we have used the word rain as a verb.
But you should also know that rain is also a noun.
The water that comes from the sky is also called rain.
So you can say that it will rain tomorrow.
That rain is a verb.
You can also say that you are worried about the rain.
Rain is a noun in that sentence.
Now, Katie, I have a question for you.
OK.
Do you like being out in the rain?
No, Nathan. I do not like to be out in the rain.
Because when it rains, everything is wet!
My shoes get wet.
My pants get wet.
To me, rain is the worst.
OK, friends, that is enough about bad weather.
Let's talk about some new things in Conversation B.
(Music).
I'm not too worried.
I live on a hill.
I don't. I live near the river.
My home may flood!
I hope not.
But roads around town may flood.
I know. Water covers the roads.
That's dangerous, too.
It is.
People drive too fast through the water.
They have accidents.
I don't like floods.
Well, we can't say goodbye to bad weather yet, Katie.
We still have to talk about it some more, especially floods.
A flood is when there is so much water that it covers the ground.
Floods are not fun at all.
But Susie is not very worried about floods.
She lives on a hill.
So her house will probably not flood.
You said today's next key word, Katie.
hill.
hill.
A hill is like a very small mountain.
It is higher than land around it, but not too high.
Many people live on hills.
So a flood must be very bad if it touches the houses that are on top of hills.
But my home in the United States is very flat.
There are no hills at all.
A flood would be very bad there.
Yeah.
Here, there are many hills and mountains.
There are lots of hills in the middle of the city and even some mountains, too.
So do you live on a hill, friends?
If you do, I hope that you have a good view so that you can see far away.
Now Nathan, you said there are many hills here in Taipei.
I think you can also find our next key word here, too.
Oh, yes. That is right.
Our next key word is...
river.
river.
A river is like a line or road of water.
There are a couple rivers that go through the city.
I live close to the (Chinese) River.
People who live next to a river have to be very careful when there are storms.
Those people are not in a good place if there is a flood.
And some rivers are very strong.
So they may not be safe to swim in.
But some rivers are good for fishing or for swimming.
The weather can also change rivers.
Yes. Rain might make rivers get higher and wider.
If you have a river near you, it can cause problems around your town or city.
But when Katie says "around," she doesn't mean in a circle around where you
live.
She means in many different places where you live.
But having a river nearby is not bad.
They're very beautiful.
Katie, do you do anything at a river near you?
Well, I often ride my bike on the river near my apartment.
On the weekends, it's really nice to get out and ride near the river.
There's always a lot of people who are exercising by the river.
So it's a lot of fun.
Yes, it is.
But now I think it's time to move on to Conversation C for some more learning.
(Music).
I'm worried about something else.
What?
Tornadoes!
I'm scared of tornadoes!
I am, too.
We do get them around here.
And the wind is bad outside.
I know.
Tornadoes are very dangerous.
But there is a safe place for us here in this building.
That's a good thing!
I think our friends are really getting nervous about the storm.
They're thinking of many bad things that could happen.
They even talked about tornadoes!
Nathan, are you scared of tornadoes?
Hmm, not really.
I would probably be scared if I was running away from one.
Are you scared of any weather, Katie?
Well, I'm really scared of tornadoes.
But we should talk about today's "Use It!" sentence.
I'm scared of something.
Nathan, give it a try.
Hmm, I don't know.
You know what, Katie?
I'm scared of nothing!
Are you sure, Nathan?
Not mice?
No.
Or the dark?
No.
Or... snakes?
(Background Noise).
OK. Yes.
I... I am scared of snakes.
I'm scared of snakes.
It's OK, Nathan. You're safe.
That was not a real snake.
But I did use a real key word there.
safe.
safe.
If you are safe, nothing will hurt you.
Nathan is safe.
No snakes are going to bite him.
Well, that's... that's good.
When there is a storm, it is good to find a safe place to stay.
Storms can be very dangerous.
Where is a safe place to be in a storm, Katie?
Well, during a rainstorm, you should probably just go inside.
Stay in your house or school.
For other things like tornadoes or earthquakes, you need to stay next to a big
thing close to you.
But, friends, no one is safe from key words.
Let's practice them now.
The first word is...
storm.
storm.
The storm is very loud.
rain.
rain.
It rained a lot during the storm.
river.
river.
There is a lot of water in the river.
hill.
hill.
Let's climb this hill.
safe.
safe.
Don't worry. We are safe here.
That is good to know.
Well, we talk about the weather so much.
I'm sure that you can use these key words soon, friends.
But right now it's time for us to take a quick break.
Please don't goaway.
