Hello, friends, this is Let's Talk in English.
We are here in the studio.
And we are ready to learn with you today.
My name is Nathan.
And it is great to teach you today, too.
We want to continue our topic called ACTIVITIES.
And we have a new lesson called How Can I Help?
How Can I Help?
Katie, how have you volunteered or helped someone before?
Well, Nathan, like we have talked about earlier this week, I have volunteered at
both soup kitchens and helping build houses for people.
But I've also volunteered at a hospital where you can go and talk to the sick
people there.
That's a good way to volunteer, also.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie, and I'm your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson for you today.
And we're both very glad that you joined us.
Yes, we are.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you like to help people?
Well, my guest today loves helping people.
She spends a lot of time volunteering.
Let's welcome our special guest, Vera Volunteer!
Thank you, Rob!
I'm happy to be here.
Vera, I know you're an energetic volunteer!
I am! I don't get paid, but I love my work!
Why is it important to volunteer?
Because others in our community need help.
Where do you volunteer?
Many different places.
This month I'm volunteering at a hospital!
I take flowers to patients' rooms.
Every Friday, a special person talks to Rob on his show.
Do you know what we can call this person?
Well, we can use a key word.
guest.
guest.
If a person comes to visit, you can call them a guest.
Rob has many guests on his show.
They don't come to see him often.
Many of them only come once.
But most of us have guests sometime.
Right.
When people come to visit our home, they are our guests.
You should treat your guests very well.
We have a lot of guests at work, don't we, Katie?
Yes. Many interesting people from around the world visit our company.
It's fun to meet them.
And it would be fun to meet Vera Volunteer, too.
She's so energetic.
Hey, that is a great key word.
energetic.
energetic.
If you are energetic, you don't get tired easily.
You are always ready to do more.
Does energetic remind you of another word, Katie?
Well, yes, it does.
The word energy.
Energy is the power of your body.
Energetic people have a lot of energy.
If Vera volunteers a lot, she needs it.
But she doesn't get paid, Katie.
Why is it important to volunteer?
Well, she said that people need help.
If we can help them, we should help them.
Oh, I know.
I just wanted to use this week's "Use It!" sentence.
Why is it (blank) to do something?
Why is it difficult to study for the test?
Or why is it bad to eat late at night?
You can ask many good questions this way.
Now Vera gives us some more ideas for volunteering.
Like going to the hospital to give patients flowers.
Oh. We have a few difficult key words today.
Here's one.
patient.
patient.
A patient is a person that a doctor is taking care of.
There are many patients in a hospital.
Some of them are very sick.
Some of them got hurt.
But they're all patients.
If you go to see a doctor at his office, you are also his patient.
You may not see him very often, but we would still call you a patient.
Sometimes patients really need someone to make them happy.
It is not fun to be a patient.
So visiting patients is one great idea to volunteer.
But maybe Vera has more in Conversation B.
(Music).
Tell us some different ways we can volunteer!
Well, if you love animals, you can volunteer at an animal shelter!
Great idea! What else?
You can help build houses for homeless people.
I volunteer at a soup kitchen!
That's another great way to help out!
I think it's important to help people who are in need.
You're right. And when you help them, you feel good about yourself!
This conversation is great for review.
But we can also learn some new things, too.
Vera says that you can help at an animal shelter if you love animals.
You know, I see so many dogs and cats on the street.
If we had more animal shelters, I think it would help us all out.
And that is a key word phrase for today.
help out.
help out.
This is a very common phrase.
But it's just like using the word help.
You just need to know how to use it.
That's right.
You help somebody out, like: We should help that man out.
His car is not working.
But you can also just ask someone if you can help out.
Katie, can I help out with the next key word?
Sure, Nathan. You can help me out by using it in a sentence.
Hmm, OK.
It always feels good to help someone in need.
Well, I'm not really in need.
I can say it myself.
Oh. You already said it.
Friends, we have another key word phrase.
in need.
in need.
If you are in need, you really need some help.
You might need some money or some help getting somewhere.
Maybe you need a different kind of help, too.
But if we say someone is in need, it is not (Chinese) case.
No. If a family is in need, they need things badly, but they don't know what to
do.
They don't know how to get help.
And that is why we need to help them.
So you might need help with your English, but we probably wouldn't say you're
really in need.
But let's still learn some more with today's Read It!
Rob's guest today is an energetic volunteer.
Volunteers don't get paid, but their work is still very important!
Would you like to be a volunteer?
There are lots of ways to help people in need.
You can volunteer at a hospital and help the patients!
Or you can be a tutor for young kids after school.
Maybe you can serve food to homeless people!
Do you like animals?
Volunteer at an animal shelter!
It's important to help out in your community!
So how will you help out in your community?
You've heard a lot of ideas.
But you can think about it some more while we continue with a couple of tips
from Read It!
Look at the first sentence.
Rob's guest today is an energetic volunteer.
The word "today" may seem like it's in a strange place, but it is correct.
Mmhm. Today's guest or guest for today are also fine.
But "Rob's guest today" is a good quick way to say she is on Rob's show today.
Also, Read It gives us one more great idea for volunteering.
We can be a tutor for young kids.
We can help them with homework and school.
You know, I have done that before, but I was paid.
I wasn't really a volunteer.
But it was a lot of fun.
Working with kids is a great experience.
And I think that our key word review will be a great experience for you, too.
Here's the first key word.
guest.
guest.
Will you be a guest on my radio show?
energetic.
energetic.
What an energetic puppy you have!
in need.
in need.
Joe helps friends who are in need.
patient.
patient.
Sara is a patient at this hospital.
help out.
help out.
We'll help out at the festival tonight.
Friends, those are all of your key words.
So make sure that you practice them at home.
They're very important.
And they will help you out with your English.
We're going to take a short break right now.
But we'll be rightback.
