You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we have fun learning English together.
My name is Katie, one of your LTE teachers.
And we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is still ACTIVITIES.
And we have part two of our lesson I Volunteer!
I Volunteer!
Now, Nathan, where is one place that we can volunteer?
We learned about one place to volunteer yesterday.
It is called a soup kitchen.
People that do not have homes can go there to get some free food.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
Now it is time to read our Let's Begin reading for today.
Please find it in your LTE magazine and read it with Katie now.
Let's begin!
Megan is working on a project for the TV station.
A family in the community lost their house in a fire.
Volunteers will build them a new home!
Members of a local church and some high school students will help.
Everyone will get dirty!
People can also donate things to the family, like clothes or toys!
Well, I guess there was some good news and some bad news in today's lesson.
Let's start with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Megan.
What are you working on?
Hi, Mark.
I'm working on a project for the TV station.
Carol asked me to.
Cool! What kind of project is it?
It's a project to help a family.
A family in the neighborhood lost their house in a fire.
That's terrible!
It is. So we're going to help build them a new home!
Wow! That sounds like a great project.
LTE TV makes TV shows, but Carol wants to help people, too.
She's very kind to ask Megan to work on that.
I think so, too.
But we should all do things to help the people around us.
Katie, I think we can help our students by talking about a key word.
Which key word?
Oh, right. I remember.
project.
project.
A project is just something that you are working on.
Megan is working on a project.
Carol asked her to.
And that project is to help build a new home for a family.
But what... what do you mean, Katie?
Carol asked her to what?
Well, remember what I said before that?
Megan is working on a project.
So Carol asked her to work on the project.
I said it a shorter way that is very common.
I see.
Now people often have projects for their job.
Your boss may give you a project.
But you often get projects from someone else, too.
Do you know who I'm thinking of, Katie?
Hmm, someone else can give you a project?
Oh, I think I know who you mean.
When I was in school, I often had projects.
So your teachers can give you projects, too.
Yes. You have to work on projects for classes sometimes.
Some projects are for one person to work on, but you can have group projects
that you do with a few people, too.
I think Megan's project is probably a group project.
I think many people will need to work together for it.
A family needs a new house because they lost their old one.
Now let's look at that key word.
lose.
lose.
If you lose something, you cannot get it back.
But why can't you get it back?
There may be different reasons.
If you can't find something, you can't get it back.
It is lost.
Lost is spelled L-O-S-T.
And that is the past tense of our key word "lose".
Like: I lost my homework.
I don't know where it is.
But you can also say that something is lost if it is really gone.
If someone dies, we can say that we lost that person.
It's very sad to lose someone.
It is also sad that a family lost their house.
It burned down in a fire, and they cannot get it back.
That's true.
And you used a key word, Nathan.
Friends, let's look at it.
fire.
fire.
Fire makes things burn. It is very bright and hot.
When a fire starts, bad things can happen.
We may lose houses or trees.
Yes, it's terrible when that happens.
But we can also use fire.
It can keep us warm.
It can give us light.
And you can cook with it, too.
So it's good to know how to make a fire, but good to know how to stop one, too.
That's right, Nathan.
Now, friends, let's see who is volunteering for this project in Conversation B.
(Music).
Who else is helping?
Members of a local church will help.
And a group of kids from Washington High School are helping, too!
Wow! The community is working together.
That's great!
Yes! The project starts next Saturday.
I want to volunteer!
What should I bring?
Bring any tools you have.
And wear old clothes!
You're going to get dirty!
There are other people who are helping with the project.
Actually, a couple groups are helping.
Some church members will... will help.
And that is a good key word.
member.
member.
A person that is in a group is called a member of that group.
There are many people in a church.
Each person is called a church member.
Churches often try to do things to help other people.
So if you go to a church often, you are a member.
You can also be a class member or a team member.
All groups have members.
Members from a high school group will also help.
Friends, have you ever helped with a project like this for school?
I hope that you get the chance.
But you can volunteer if you aren't in a group, too.
Just be ready.
You're going to get dirty.
Oh, that is a key word, too.
dirty.
dirty.
Something dirty is not clean.
It might have a lot of dirt on it, but maybe not.
That's right.
And when you are building or cleaning a house, you usually get dirty.
You will not be clean when you are done.
So wear something that is OK to get dirty.
But, Nathan, why did you say you're going to get dirty?
No one goes to work so that they can get dirty.
Oh. No, that... that's not what I mean.
If you're going to get dirty, it means you will become dirty.
It's not the reason that you are going.
Now I think that we're going to get ready for Conversation C now. Ready?
OK. Here we go.
This project sounds really great!
But I want to do more for the family.
The family lost everything.
A department store is donating new furniture.
But they need other things, too!
Like clothes or toys?
Right! I'm going to give the kids some new books.
What about food?
I can buy some.
Good idea.
But wait until we build the kitchen!
Mark and Megan have some other great ideas to help the family.
They lost everything.
Hey, there's "lost" again.
Our key word.
You're right, Katie.
But the fire really burned everything they had.
So maybe people can buy them some things that they need, like clothes or toys.
And, friends, that's our last key word for today.
toy.
toy.
A toy is something to play with.
There are so many kinds of toys.
A ball is a toy and a doll is a toy, too.
What toys did you like when you were a kid, Nathan?
Well, I played with some things like toy trucks, but I loved playing with
building blocks.
You could use them to make so many different things because there were so many
kinds.
How about you, Katie?
Well, I really loved to play with dolls.
They are a fun toy.
And my friends and I really enjoyed playing with them.
Well, friends, now I think that it is time to...
Katie, wait until we finish the lesson.
We need to use our "Use It!" sentence.
Oh, wait! You just did, Nathan.
Wait until we do something.
Like: wait until we take the break.
And now it's time to practice today's key words.
Here's the first key word.
project.
project.
Steve is working on his school project.
lose.
lose.
Billy lost his car in the accident.
fire.
fire.
Don't play with fire!
member.
member.
How many members are in your group?
dirty.
dirty.
Wash your hands, Katie! They're dirty.
toy.
toy.
The child got a toy for his birthday.
And those are all of our key words for today.
Friends, we're going to take a short break right now.
But we'll be right back afterthat.
