You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's time to have fun and learn some English together.
My name is Katie.
And we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is still HEALTH.
And we have part two of our lesson What Can I Eat?
What Can I Eat?
Now, Nathan, do you eat healthy food?
Yes, I do try to eat healthy food.
I like to eat vegetables every day.
But it's important to think about what you eat.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you.
Now, let's open our LTE magazines and find our Let's Begin reading for today.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Ken is hungry. He wants a hot dog.
He can go to Jungle Cafe to get one.
Rob doesn't want a hot dog.
He is on a diet.
He wants to lose weight.
But some diets are unhealthy.
People on them don't eat the right foods.
Snacks can help people eat less.
But they should choose healthy snacks and not eat junk food!
I think we have a lot to learn today.
Let's go to Conversation A.
(Music).
You did a good job on that interview, Rob.
Thanks, Ken.
Now I'm really hungry.
Let's go to the Jungle Cafe and get a hot dog.
Uh... I can't eat a hot dog.
Why not?
I'm on a diet.
I want to lose some weight.
Why are you on a diet?
You're not fat.
You don't need to lose weight.
Ken and Rob are in Conversation A.
And we learn right away that Ken is hungry.
And that is today's first key word.
hungry.
hungry.
When you are hungry, you want to eat.
If you're hungry, there's no food in your stomach.
When you're hungry, your stomach may make noise.
When that happens, we say your stomach is growling.
We get hungry when we have not eaten anything for a long time.
When you're hungry, you need to eat a meal.
You need to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I usually get really, really hungry in the morning.
I love to eat breakfast.
Friends, we use the word hungry a lot.
You can say you're hungry or you're really hungry.
If you're really hungry, you can say you're starving.
That's another word for being very hungry.
Now in our conversation, Ken wants a hot dog.
But Rob says he can't eat a hot dog.
He's on a diet.
Now, Nathan, why is Rob on a diet?
Rob says he wants to lose some weight.
And those are our next two key words.
Thank you, Nathan.
Friends, let's look at our first key word.
lose.
lose.
If you lose something, you have less of it or you don't know where something is.
We usually use the word "lose" to talk about what happens when you lose
something.
You don't know where it is.
But in this conversation, we are talking about getting rid of something.
Rob wants to lose some weight.
Now we should probably learn about that key word, too.
You're right.
Friends, let's look at our next key word.
weight.
weight.
Your weight is how much you weigh or how heavy you are.
That's right.
Everyone has a weight.
And if you have a healthy weight, you are not too heavy.
If you have an unhealthy weight, your weight might be too high or too low.
Now we often use these two key words together.
People often talk about wanting to lose some weight.
If you want to lose weight, you want to weigh less than you weigh right now.
And when people want to lose weight, they usually go on a diet.
Katie, what are some things that you can do if you want to lose weight?
Well, if you want to lose some weight, there are a lot of things you can do.
You can exercise more.
You can run or ride a bike.
Those things will help you lose weight.
And friends, you can also eat healthier.
You can eat healthy food like fruits and vegetables.
But don't eat a lot of cookies and candy.
Yes, those are some good ideas.
Maybe you can try that if you want to lose some weight.
But Ken doesn't think that Rob needs to lose weight.
Some people do.
Some people don't.
But it also depends on what you are comfortable with, too.
That's right.
Friends, it's important to be careful if you decide to go on a diet.
But now let's go to Conversation B and find out why Rob is on a diet.
I'm trying to be healthy.
That's good.
But some diets are really unhealthy.
When you're on them, you don't eat enough food.
I'm not on one of those diets.
But I am hungry...
Then have a small snack now.
If you don't, you might eat more later!
What do you mean?
You'll be really hungry.
Then you'll eat a bigger meal!
We find out why Rob is on a diet.
He's trying to be healthy.
He's trying to do things that are good for his body.
And that is a good idea.
But like Ken says, some diets are unhealthy.
And Nathan, that is a key word.
You're right, Katie.
Friends, let's take a look at this word.
unhealthy.
unhealthy.
If something is unhealthy, it's not good for you.
It is not healthy.
A lot of different things are unhealthy.
Like we talked about yesterday, foods like cookies and candy are very unhealthy
for you because they have a lot of sugar in them.
And chips are also unhealthy.
But foods like fruits and vegetables are good for you.
They are healthy.
You should eat a lot of those because they are healthy foods.
And some diets can be unhealthy.
Like our conversation says, "On some diets, you don't eat enough food." And that
kind of diet is very bad for you.
Mmhm. Some diets make you lose weight too fast, and that is unhealthy.
And friends, it's also unhealthy to not exercise at least a few times a week.
Well, that is true. But, Nathan, did you know that too much exercise is also
unhealthy?
Well, yes, I did know that.
And friends, exercise is great, but too much exercise is unhealthy.
It's important to let your body rest.
That's right.
Friends, there are a lot of things you can do that are healthy for you.
But right now we need to go to Conversation C.
(Music).
Maybe. But many snacks are unhealthy.
You don't have to eat junk food.
There are healthy snacks.
You're right.
I can choose to eat healthy snacks.
The Jungle Cafe has healthy food.
Why not order some fruit or a small salad?
I will. Thanks!
Now, let's go get a snack.
OK! A healthy one!
But I still want a hot dog!
Rob and Ken are still talking about snacks.
Now remember, a snack is something small that you eat.
But many snacks are unhealthy.
Our "Use It!" sentence today is:
You don't have to eat junk food.
You don't have to do something.
Let's use it!
You don't have to sing the whole song.
You don't have to exercise every day.
And you don't have to eat junk food.
Rob can choose to eat healthy snacks.
And that is our key word for this conversation.
choose.
choose.
If you choose something, you pick it or you decide on it.
That's right.
Rob can choose to eat healthy snacks.
That means he can pick a healthy snack or decide to eat something healthy.
You can choose other things, too.
You choose the clothes you wear every day.
And you choose what to eat for lunch every day.
And, friends, you can choose to do the right thing.
Yes.
Choosing to do the right thing is very important.
But it is not always easy.
Now, Katie, what if someone offered you a cookie or a salad for a snack?
Which would you choose?
Well, just like you said, choosing to do the right thing is very hard because I
would want the cookie, but I would choose the salad.
Now, friends, when you choose something, we call that your choice.
That is a good word to know.
And Rob's choice is to get a healthy snack.
My choice is to practice key words with you now.
Here is your first key word.
hungry.
hungry.
Let's eat. I'm hungry.
lose.
lose.
Did you lose an earring?
weight.
weight.
The baby's weight was 6 pounds.
unhealthy.
unhealthy.
Don't eat junk food. That's unhealthy.
choose.
choose.
David will sing. Choose a song.
OK, friends, those are all of our key words for today.
I hope that you practiced them with us because they are some very important
words to know.
Right now we're going to take a break.
But we will be right back after that.
So don't goaway!
