You are watching Let's Talk in English.
You can watch this week's conversations and features one more time.
Did you know something very cool is happening to Susie today?
We talked about that in our SCHOOL lesson.
We also had a fun FOOD lesson this week.
It's always good to know some good food words.
Now let's get started for today.
Hey, Susie. Are you going somewhere?
Yes, I am going to Washington High School, Ken.
Why are you going to a high school?
The school will have a fair for its anniversary.
I'm doing a report on it.
That's great.
How old is the school?
It's fifty years old!
The fair is for the school's 50th anniversary.
What will happen at the fair?
A lot of things!
People can enjoy food, music, games...
Games! I love games at the fair!
Yes! There are many kinds.
In some games you throw a ball at something.
And you hit things.
And get prizes!
Will the school's marching band play at the fair?
Yes.
Some students and teachers will sing and dance, too.
How many people will go to the fair?
Many, many people!
Washington High School is a big, important school.
And maybe students from the last fifty years will come.
Are any of them famous now?
One of them is a little famous.
Really? Who is it?
Me! I went to Washington High School!
(Music).
What are you doing on Saturday, Mark?
I don't have any plans.
What are you doing?
Rob and I are going to a fair.
A fair?
What kind of fair?
A high school fair.
It doesn't sound very cool. I know.
You're right. It doesn't.
Why are you going?
It's an anniversary fair at Susie's old high school.
She invited us.
Oh, Susie went to a high school yesterday.
Yes, Washington High School!
She's doing a report about Saturday's fair.
So she went there to learn more.
Will there be good food at the fair?
I think so.
Different restaurants will have booths.
And students' parents will make food, too.
Will any of the booths have pie?
Maybe. Why?
It's autumn already.
I really want some pumpkin pie!
There will be traditional fall games at the fair.
At one booth, you can bob for apples!
Fun! I did that when I was a kid.
Me, too.
They will have live music at the fair, too.
Maybe this fair will be cool.
And something else is cool.
Susie will get an award from the principal at the fair.
Really? For what?
She's the school's most famous former student!
Hey, there's a new Indian restaurant near the TV station.
Really? I love Indian food!
Let's go there soon.
I love Indian food, too.
Sure, let's go.
Carol, do you like Indian food?
I don't know.
I never eat it. I'm afraid to.
What are you afraid of?
Indian food is really spicy!
It might upset my stomach.
Some Indian food is really spicy.
But some Indian food is not spicy.
Right.
You can tell your server, "I don't want spicy dishes." Maybe.
What's your favorite Indian dish, Megan?
I really like aloo gobi.
It's a potato and cauliflower dish.
Oh, I like that, too.
But my favorite is a beef dish.
You two really like Indian food.
You might like it, too. Just try it.
Well, I do like potatoes.
But is your favorite dish spicy, Megan?
Sometimes.
Hey, let's all go to the restaurant together.
We can go for lunch tomorrow.
OK. I can try some Indian food with you.
But I don't want any spicy food!
We know!
Megan, how was the new Indian restaurant?
You went there already?
Yes. Carol, Mark and I went there today.
The food was a little too spicy.
We were so thirsty!
Oh, no. What did Carol think?
She doesn't like spicy food.
She didn't like it. I felt bad.
Why did you feel bad?
Mark and I asked her to go with us.
I love spicy food.
I want to try that restaurant.
Do you like Thai food, Ken?
It's spicy.
I do! I love Thai curry!
Me, too!
Thai food is my favorite foreign food.
I love the flavors.
My favorite foreign food is Italian food.
I love spaghetti!
But it's not really foreign.
What about you, Ken?
I don't know.
I like so many different kinds of food!
Do you like Japanese food, Ken?
Some of it.
I like Japanese noodles, but sometimes they're really salty.
So Japanese food isn't your favorite?
No. Maybe my favorite foreign food is Mexican food.
Good choice!
I like Mexican food, too.
I love all the meat, cheese, beans, onions...
OK, now I'm ready for Mexican food.
And I just ate lunch!
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you like food? I do.
Well, my guest today is an expert on food.
Please help me welcome Chef Spoon.
Welcome, Chef Spoon!
You own five restaurants.
What kind of food do you serve?
Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, Italian, Thai, Indian...
Wait! How can you serve so many different kinds of food?
The chefs in my restaurants combine parts of different kinds of food to make new
dishes.
So one dish can be both Chinese and Italian?
Sure!
Try my kung-pao chicken pizza sometime.
Kung-pao chicken pizza?
Yes! It's both Chinese and Italian, and people think it's delicious!
That sounds interesting!
The food at my restaurants is interesting.
Have you ever tried tofu tacos?
Tofu in tacos?
Yes!
Tofu is a common food in Asian dishes, but I use it in tacos!
You must know a lot about different cultures' dishes.
I do.
And I cook a lot of different foods to learn what tastes good together!
What's your favorite kind of foreign food?
If you like many different kinds, try combining them in new ways.
Some chefs combine parts of different kinds of food.
The chefs cook with different cultures' foods and try new things.
These special dishes are both interesting and delicious.
Kung-pao chicken pizza combines both Chinese and Italian food.
And tofu tacos are both Asian and Mexican!
What kinds of food would you like to try together?
Hello again, friends.
Now it is time...
Nathan... You're finally here!
Now we can answer some review questions.
Oh, this is going to be so much fun.
Well, I'm glad you're excited, Chris.
Uh, but you're not usually this happy to see me.
Why are you so excited today?
Because our friends did so many fun things this week.
I want to talk about them.
So come on, Nathan, what is your first question?
Oh, uh, well, um...
I was going to ask...
It was a question about Washington High School.
Who is the most famous person that went to school there?
Oh, that's an easy one, Nathan.
It was Susie. The principal is going to give her an award today.
You're right, Chris.
Today is the school fair.
I almost forgot.
OK, now I have a harder question for you, Chris.
What food does Chef Spoon make that is Asian and Mexican?
Oh! That's not hard enough, Nathan.
Chef Spoon makes taco...
No, wait. That's wrong.
Taco...
Wait. He makes tofu tacos!
I don't think I would like them, though.
Would you, Nathan?
Well, um, I like some kinds of tofu, and I like tacos a lot.
Uh, maybe I would.
Don't you think you should try them, Chris?
Have you ever tried to eat a taco with your wings?
It doesn't work!
Sorry, Chris. I didn't think of that.
Well, uh, let's take a break now.
But please come back for morereview.
