Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
We are in the LTE TV studio.
And we are ready to teach you some English today.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here.
And today we will continue our topic called FOOD.
And our lesson is called Different Kinds of Food.
Different Kinds of Food.
Katie, do you like spicy food?
Nathan, I do like spicy food.
I think spicy food is very good.
It makes food taste a lot better.
Hi, friends, my name is Katie.
And I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
I hope that you're ready to keep talking about food today.
So we need to get started.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
Nathan will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
The food at the new Indian restaurant was too spicy.
Mark, Megan and Carol were really thirsty!
Megan felt bad for Carol.
Ken likes spicy food.
He loves Thai curry.
Thai food is Megan's favorite.
She loves the flavors.
Susie likes Italian food.
She loves spaghetti.
Ken likes Japanese noodles, but sometimes they're too salty.
Friends, we have a lot to learn about, so let's go to Conversation A and get
started.
(Music).
Megan, how was the new Indian restaurant?
You went there already?
Yes. Carol, Mark and I went there today.
The food was a little too spicy.
We were so thirsty!
Oh, no. What did Carol think?
She doesn't like spicy food.
She didn't like it.
I felt bad.
Why did you feel bad?
Mark and I asked her to go with us.
Friends, do you remember what country's food we were talking about yesterday?
That's right.
We talked about Indian food.
And Indian food can be very spicy.
It might be a little too spicy for some people.
A little too spicy means that the spicy taste was a little bit more than they
liked.
Today, Megan says the food was so spicy that it made her and her friends
thirsty.
That's today's first key word.
thirsty.
thirsty.
If you are thirsty, you really want something to drink.
And when you eat something spicy, your mouth feels very hot.
You get thirsty for something nice and cold.
That will make your mouth feel better.
And that's a good way to use this word, Katie.
I'm thirsty for something.
You might be thirsty for cold water when you eat something spicy.
But that's not the best thing to drink.
Really, Nathan?
What should you drink when you eat something spicy?
Well, you should drink something with milk in it.
Milk will make your mouth feel much better.
Water doesn't always help.
But when you're just thirsty, it's best to drink water.
Yes, water can stop your thirst.
It's what your body needs.
If you don't drink enough water, you might start to feel bad.
Hey, we have another key word to talk about.
bad.
bad.
I think some of you probably know this word because it is very common.
If something is bad, it is not good or not right.
If you feel bad, maybe your body hurts.
But sometimes we say that we feel bad when we are sorry.
Megan feels bad that Carol didn't like the food.
She is sorry about that.
That's right, two different meanings.
But right now we need to move on to Conversation B.
(Music).
I love spicy food.
I want to try that restaurant.
Do you like Thai food, Ken?
It's spicy.
I do! I love Thai curry!
Me, too!
Thai food is my favorite foreign food.
I love the flavors.
My favorite foreign food is Italian food.
I love spaghetti!
But it's not really foreign.
What about you, Ken?
I don't know.
I like so many different kinds of food!
The next food that we need to talk about is Thai food.
Thai food is from Thailand.
And there is something similar between Indian and Thai food.
Nathan, do you know what it is?
Well, I think so.
Both can be very spicy.
But I can think of something else that is similar.
Indian and Thai food both have curry.
That's one of my favorite foods.
You're right, Nathan.
But Indian and Thai curry have very different flavors.
Now let's look at that key word.
flavor.
flavor.
Flavor is what something tastes like.
The Thai curry I have tried had a sweet flavor from coconut milk.
The Indian curry I have tried was more salty.
But I know there are many kinds of curry with many different flavors.
That's right.
In Taipei, you can also get tea with many different fruit flavors.
I like grapefruit green tea.
Nathan, what flavor do you like?
I really like cranberry green tea.
But there are many flavors to choose from.
So, Katie, what is the next foreign food we can talk about?
I think that's Italian food.
But in the United States, we don't really think Italian food is foreign.
Many American families make Italian food at home, like spaghetti.
And that is our next key word.
spaghetti.
spaghetti.
This is a kind of Italian noodle.
It is long and looks like a string.
We often eat spaghetti with tomato sauce on it.
Spaghetti is a common American meal, but it comes from Italy like Katie said.
And there are many restaurants here that also make Italian noodles, too.
Friends, we're out of time right now, so let's keep learning with Conversation
C.
(Music).
Do you like Japanese food, Ken?
Some of it.
I like Japanese noodles, but sometimes they're really salty.
So Japanese food isn't your favorite?
No. Maybe my favorite foreign food is Mexican food.
Good choice!
I like Mexican food, too.
I love all the meat, cheese, beans, onions...
OK, now I'm ready for Mexican food.
And I just ate lunch!
We've been talking about noodles, but you may not know that key word.
noodle.
noodle.
Noodles are made from dough (Chinese) and often cooked in hot water.
And many countries have their own noodles.
But each country might have many different kinds of noodles, too.
I know that there are many kinds here.
You're right, Katie.
There are thin noodles and thick noodles, and you can also find noodles made
from rice here.
They look kind of clear.
Also, there're some noodles that you eat cold and some that you eat hot.
Noodles are different colors, too.
I have seen white, yellow, green and gray noodles.
And different noodle dishes have different flavors.
Ken likes Japanese noodles, but sometimes they're salty.
Now let's look at that key word.
salty.
salty.
Salty is one kind of flavor.
Now what word do you hear in salty, Katie?
Well, salt, of course.
If something is salty, it has the taste of salt.
Like the taste of water from the ocean, it is very salty.
Food can also be salty.
Some people like salty flavors, but I don't.
Some things need a little salt, but I don't use much.
Most food is not salty until we put salt in it.
So Ken doesn't like things that are very salty, either.
I think I agree with Ken.
I don't like very salty foods.
Right now let's review our key words for today.
Here is the first key word.
thirsty.
thirsty.
Can I have some tea? I'm thirsty.
bad.
bad.
I forgot your name. I feel bad.
flavor.
flavor.
What flavor is this cake? Lemon?
spaghetti.
spaghetti.
My spaghetti has lots of vegetables.
noodle.
noodle.
Lucy likes to eat beef noodles.
salty.
salty.
This dish is too salty. I don't like it.
Those are some great food words.
Now let's take a short break.
(Music).
