Welcome to Let's Talk in English, friends.
We are here in the LTE TV studio, and we are ready to have a great day with you.
My name is Nathan.
And I am very glad to be teaching you today.
We have the same topic as yesterday - SCHOOL.
And our lesson title is A School Fair.
A School Fair.
What's your favorite thing to do at the fair, Katie?
Well, I think that my favorite thing to do at the fair is go on the rides.
I love adventure.
And those rides are a lot of fun at fairs.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie.
And I hope that you are ready for today's lesson.
We have a lot of great things to teach you today.
So let's get started.
Take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken will go to the fair at Washington High School.
Mark doesn't have any plans.
He can go, too.
Mark can get some pumpkin pie at one of the booths.
Susie is doing a report on the fair.
And the principal will give her an award.
She's the school's most famous former student!
Well, let's find out some more about this in Conversation A.
(Music).
What are you doing on Saturday, Mark?
I don't have any plans.
What are you doing?
Rob and I are going to a fair.
A fair? What kind of fair?
A high school fair.
It doesn't sound very cool. I know.
You're right. It doesn't.
Why are you going?
It's an anniversary fair at Susie's old high school.
She invited us.
We start with a question in Conversation A.
Ken wants to know what Mark is doing on Saturday.
How does Mark answer, Katie?
Well, he says that he doesn't have any plans.
And, Nathan, I think that is a key word.
Oh. Well, you're right.
We should learn about it.
plan.
plan.
A plan is when you decide to do something.
Just like Mark, we often say that we have no plans if we haven't decided what to
do on a certain day.
If you do have plans, that means that you are busy that day.
You have something you have decided to do on the weekend or on a different day.
In our conversation, the word "plan" is a noun.
You have plans, which means you are busy.
But you can also use this word as a verb.
You can plan to do something.
So I can say that I plan to go home for Christmas or my plan for Christmas is to
go home.
And we say that we make plans.
That is one more way to use this word.
Those are great examples.
Now let's see what else Ken and Mark will say in Conversation B.
Oh, Susie went to a high school yesterday.
Yes, Washington High School!
She's doing a report about Saturday's fair.
So she went there to learn more.
Will there be good food at the fair?
I think so.
Different restaurants will have booths.
And students' parents will make food, too.
Will any of the booths have pie?
Maybe. Why?
It's autumn already.
I really want some pumpkin pie!
Well, Susie is doing a report about the fair that is on Saturday.
And that is one of our key words.
report.
report.
A report is something that you write when you tell people all about something.
People who work at a newspaper or a TV station do reports on a lot of different
things.
Reports are important because they tell us about things that happen in the
world.
Or you might do a report when you are in school.
If you have to do a book report, you write about a book that you have read so
that you can tell people about that book.
I remember doing book reports.
And we know Susie is doing a report about the fair.
She went to the fair to learn more about it.
When you do a report, you have to know all about what you are going to tell
people.
And we also find out that there will be a lot of food at the fair.
Different restaurants will have different booths.
Now a booth is a space set up so one person can do something.
At a fair, there are a lot of booths so that people can sell things like food
and other items.
That's right.
And Mark wants to know if any of the booths will have pie.
I think that's our next delicious key word, Katie.
Thank you, Nathan.
Friends, let's learn about this delicious key word.
pie.
pie.
Pie is a sweet food like cake.
It usually has something inside the bread like fruit or frosting.
Mmhm. And pie is very delicious.
A lot of people in America eat pie at Thanksgiving.
A pie is always in the shape of a circle.
And when you eat pie, you usually eat one slice or one piece of the pie.
Mmm. Thinking about pie is making me so hungry.
So friends, let's keep learning.
Mark really wants some pumpkin pie because it's autumn already.
And that is our next key word.
pumpkin.
pumpkin.
Now a pumpkin is a big vegetable like this.
It is round and orange.
We usually see pumpkins around Halloween.
Mmhm. But you can make different kinds of food out of pumpkins.
You can make pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie.
And pumpkin pie is a special food that many people eat in America.
We usually eat pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.
And we usually eat foods with pumpkin in autumn.
Friends, the word autumn is another word for fall.
That's right.
Now, friends, we're out of time, so let's go to Conversation C.
(Music).
There will be traditional fall games at the fair.
At one booth, you can bob for apples!
Fun! I did that when I was a kid.
Me, too.
They will have live music at the fair, too.
Maybe this fair will be cool!
And something else is cool.
Susie will get an award from the principal at the fair.
Really? For what?
She's the school's most famous former student!
Conversation C starts with our "Use It!" sentence for today.
There will be traditional games at the fair.
There will be something at the (blank).
Friends, let's try to use it!
Here's a "Use It!" sentence.
There will be animals at the zoo.
Or there will be snacks at the football game.
Friends, try to say a "Use It!" sentence today.
We continue to talk about things you can do at the fair.
You can bob for apples at one booth.
That's a game where you try to pick up apples with your teeth.
That is a hard game.
And there will be live music, too.
And Susie will get an award from the principal.
That's a key word.
Let's take a look.
principal.
principal.
A principal is someone who is in charge of a school.
That's right.
Your principal is the person at your school who probably makes a lot of the
rules.
He is an important person at the school.
You should listen to your principal.
And the principal at Washington High School will give Susie an award.
She is the most famous former student.
That is our last key word for today.
former.
former.
If something is former, it's from the past.
Susie is a former student because she used to go to that school, but she doesn't
anymore.
That's right.
I am also a former student because I used to go to school, but I don't go
anymore.
My university is my former school.
I don't go there anymore.
Friends, we need to practice our key words now.
Say them with us.
Here is the first key word.
plan.
plan.
I have plans. I'm going to a concert.
pumpkin.
pumpkin.
Many pumpkins are orange.
pie.
pie.
Many people like to eat apple pie.
report.
report.
I'm watching a news report on TV.
principal.
principal.
Mr. Fong is the principal of my school.
former.
former.
We really miss our former teacher.
OK, friends, thank you for practicing your key words.
Now it's time for a short break.
(Music).
