You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we have fun learning English together.
My name is Katie.
And we're very glad that you joined us today at LTE TV.
We have a new topic for you, and that topic is SCHOOL.
And the title of our new lesson is A School Fair.
A School Fair.
Nathan, have you ever been to a school fair?
Yes, I have been to a school fair before.
My high school has a fair every year, and it's always very fun.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you.
Well, you know we always like to start with our Let's Begin reading.
So read from your magazine with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Susie is going to Washington High School today.
It's a big, important high school.
The school is having a fair.
Why? The school is fifty years old!
They are celebrating the school's 50th anniversary.
What will happen at the fair?
The school's marching band will play.
People can enjoy food, games and other music, too.
Doesn't it sound fun?
Well, let's go to Conversation A and get started.
(Music).
Hey, Susie. Are you going somewhere?
Yes, I am going to Washington High School, Ken.
Why are you going to a high school?
The school will have a fair for its anniversary.
I'm doing a report on it.
That's great.
How old is the school?
It's fifty years old!
The fair is for the school's 50th anniversary.
Well, Susie is doing another report.
This time she is doing a report on Washington High School.
Now why is she doing a report on this school, Nathan?
Well, like she says, the school will have a fair for its anniversary.
That's right, Nathan.
And that is a key word for today, friends.
So let's learn about it.
fair.
fair.
A fair is an event.
When you go to a fair, you can do a lot of different things, like play games
and... ride on fun rides.
Fairs often have rides like Ferris wheels or merry-go-rounds.
And they have a lot of fun games to play, too.
What's your favorite game to play at a fair, Katie?
Well, my favorite game is a game where you have to roll a ball and you try to
get it into a hole.
If you roll the ball into the middle hole, you get a lot of points.
That is a fun game.
Now, friends, at a fair you can usually win a lot of prizes like candy or
stuffed animals.
And there's even food to eat at fairs, too.
You can eat hot dogs and hamburgers and a lot of other things.
That's right.
Some of that food is delicious, but food at the fair usually is not very
healthy.
But friends, we learn that the school is having a fair for its anniversary.
An anniversary is a day when you celebrate something that happened on that same
day but in a different year in the past.
That's why Susie asks: How old is the school?
And that is today's "Use It!" sentence.
How old is something?
Like this: How old is the puppy?
How old is your car?
How old is the food?
That's a great sentence to know.
And then we find out that Washington High School is fifty years old.
That is our next key word.
Thank you, Nathan.
Friends, let's learn about this word.
fifty [50].
fifty [50].
Fifty is a number.
You can have fifty of something.
Like I could say that I have fifty pens on my desk.
Mmhm. Or you can be fifty years old, just like the school is fifty years old.
And Susie also tells us that the fair is for the school's 50th anniversary.
Now in your conversation, you see the number 50 with T-H on the end for 50th.
But if you write out the word, it's spelled F-I-F-T-I-E-T-H.
You can either write the number or the word.
OK, it's time for us to go to Conversation B now.
But we'll be back.
(Music).
What will happen at the fair?
A lot of things!
People can enjoy food, music, games...
Games!
I love games at the fair!
Yes! There are many kinds.
In some games you throw a ball at something.
And you hit things.
And get prizes!
Will the school's marching band play at the fair?
Yes. Some students and teachers will sing and dance, too.
Conversation B starts with a question.
What will happen at the fair?
There is a key word.
happen.
happen.
If something happens, something changes around you or near you.
At the fair, a lot of things will be happening.
So there will be a lot of things to do.
That's right.
So when Ken asks, "What will happen at the fair?" He wants to know what people
can do at the fair.
But we can use this word in different ways, too.
You can ask people "What happened?" when you want to know about an event that
has already gone by.
(Background Noise).
Whoa! Nathan, what just happened?
I don't know what happened.
I think it was... I think it was one of the cameramen.
Jack, was that... was that you?
Well, we should continue.
Yeah, we should.
Now friends, if you want to tell someone about something, you can also say: Did
you hear what happened?
I did hear, but I don't know what happened.
And we know that a lot of things will happen at the fair.
There will be a lot of things for people to do.
People can enjoy food, music and games.
There are a lot of different kinds of games at the fair.
And when you play games, you get prizes.
We talked about that earlier today.
And Ken also wants to know if the school's marching band will play.
And that is the next key word.
marching band.
marching band.
A marching band is a huge band.
There are many different instruments that are played in a marching band.
That's right.
Marching bands usually have different kinds of drums and horn instruments.
And it's called a marching band because the people who are in the band usually
march together.
They march in lines together, and they always walk at the same speed.
They also wear the same clothes and the same hat.
Everything looks the same and is very colorful.
That's how you know that they are in the marching band.
People usually play in a marching band where they're... when they are in high
school or even in university.
Now, Nathan, have you ever played in a marching band?
Well, I was in band in school, but we did not have a marching band.
It would've been very fun, I am sure.
How about you, Katie?
No. I have never played in a marching band, either.
You have to know how to play an instrument, and I don't know how to play an
instrument.
But I did enjoy watching the band march when I was in college.
The bands are very, very talented.
Well, friends, I think that we're out of time for now.
But let's go together to Conversation C, and we will learn a few more things
there.
How many people will go to the fair?
Many, many people!
Washington High School is a big, important school.
And maybe students from the last fifty years will come.
Are any of them famous now?
One of them is a little famous.
Really? Who is it?
Me! I went to Washington High School!
It looks like this fair is going to be a big event.
Many people will go to the fair.
And they will go because Washington High School is a big, important school.
And that is a key word.
important.
important.
If something is important, it has a lot of meaning.
The school is important, so that means the school is very good.
Sometimes in school your teacher might say that a test is important.
If a test is important, you need to study a lot because the grade is important
for your class.
And people can also be important.
The president of a country is important because he is the person who is in
charge of the country.
And the job that you have is important to your life because that is how you make
money.
Now Nathan, what else do you think is important?
Well, I think it's very important to know what is right and wrong.
You need to be able to decide what is right and what is wrong.
And friends, people can be important to you, too.
For example, your family is usually important to you because you love the people
in your family.
That's right.
If you love someone, that person is very important to you.
Now friends, let's look at one other thing in this conversation.
Ken asks if any of the students from the last fifty years are famous now.
And Susie says that one of them is a little famous.
She means herself.
Friends, we're out of time, so let's review today's key words together.
First we have...
important.
important.
The boss is an important person.
fair.
fair.
The kids can play games at the fair.
fifty [50].
fifty [50].
I have fifty pencils. That's a lot!
happen.
happen.
What is happening at your school?
marching band.
marching band.
Ted plays in the marching band.
OK, friends, I hope that you can use these words soon.
Don't forget to practice them.
But right now it's time for a break.
Don't goaway.
