Welcome to our show, friends.
We hope you are ready to learn some English here on Let's Talk in English with
us today.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on Let's Talk in English.
And today we have a new topic.
Our topic is LIFE.
That's a big topic.
And our lesson is called Cellphone Manners.
Cellphone Manners.
Katie, do you think cellphone manners are important?
Yes, Nathan. I do think that cellphone manners are imporant.
Most people have a cellphone, so it's important to have good manners when you
use it.
Hi, everyone, my name is Katie, and I hope that you're ready to learn a lot with
us today.
But before we get started, we need to read today's Let's Begin!
So, take out your LTE magazine and find today's Let's Begin!
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Susie is upset.
She had lunch with some people from sales, and they were impolite.
They were always checking their phones or taking calls during lunch.
They did not say "excuse me" before they answered a call.
One man played games on his phone and ignored everyone.
That was rude.
Well, friends, let's find out what happens in Conversation A.
(Music).
You look upset, Susie.
What's bothering you?
Well, Rob, I had lunch today with some people from sales.
Was the food bad?
No, the food was good.
Was the server rude?
No. He was fine, too.
Then what was wrong?
The people from sales kept checking their phones!
Well, they are busy people.
Well, poor Susie.
She is upset.
And she should be.
Her lunch with people from sales did not go well.
Isn't that right, Katie?
Katie.
Oh, uh, yeah, Nathan.
I mean, it's really rude when people don't pay attention to you, don't you
think?
Uh... Yeah, sure, Nathan, whatever you say.
I hate it when people use their phone when I'm talking to them, don't you,
Katie?
Hmm.
Uh, yeah. That... that's not nice.
Katie, what are you doing?
What are you talking about, Nathan?
I'm texting my mom.
But, Katie, we are teaching now.
You did this during our last lesson, too.
You're being rude and checking your phone.
Oh, Nathan, I'm sorry.
You're right. I am being rude.
And friends, Nathan just used two of today's key words.
You're right, Katie.
Let's look at the first one.
rude.
rude.
If someone is rude, they are not being nice.
Being rude is not polite.
That's right.
I was being rude to Nathan by playing... I mean, using my phone when he was
trying to talk to me.
If someone wants to talk to you, don't be rude; try to listen to that person.
And Susie had to eat lunch with some rude people.
They were always checking their phones.
And that's our next key word.
check.
check.
If you check something, you look at it and pay attention to it.
When we look at our cellphones to read a text message or see if someone called,
we are checking our phones.
We are looking at our phone to see if anyone called.
You can check other things, too.
If you do your homework, check it to make sure that there are no problems.
And when I take a test, I always check my answers when I finish to make sure
that they look good and all the answers are right.
So friends, remember not to check your phone if someone is talking to you.
That's an important lesson.
But you should also take our advice and check your homework and tests, too.
That's always good to do.
But now there are more important things to learn in Conversation B.
So let's see what they will talk about there now.
(Music).
I understand that.
But they should be polite.
They can say, "Excuse me, I have to take this call.".
And they didn't do that?
No. They just answered their cellphones at the table.
Then they had long conversations.
That's not right.
They should leave the table for long calls.
And one man played games on his phone for the whole meal.
He ignored everyone.
Susie really thinks the people from sales should be more polite.
What do you think, Nathan?
Is it important to be polite?
Well, yes, it's very important to be polite.
When you talk to people, you should be nice to them.
If you aren't nice and polite, it's like you don't think the other person is
very important.
And if you need to take a call, you should always say: Excuse me, I need to take
this call.
That's what Susie says, too.
And let's look at our key word here.
excuse.
excuse.
We use this word a lot of ways.
If we excuse someone, we are saying that we are not mad at them anymore.
That's right.
And a lot of times we say, "Excuse me." This is a very important phrase to know
when you are learning English.
If you are trying to get someone's attention when they are busy, you can say:
Excuse me.
If it's crowded on the MRT and you need to get off the train, you can say to
people "Excuse me." And you can even use this phrase to say you are sorry to
someone.
You can say "Excuse me" if you bump into somebody.
That's right, too.
Now friends, try to use this phrase today.
Maybe you will get a good chance.
Later in our conversation, we find out that the sales people at lunch answered
their phones and had long conversations at the lunch table.
Now that is rude.
And one man played games the whole time.
He ignored everyone.
And there is our next key word.
ignore.
ignore.
If you ignore someone, you do not listen to that person or you do not pay
attention to them.
Mmhm.
The man in the conversation ignored Susie.
He was playing a game instead of talking to her.
That's so rude.
If you're at school, it's important not to ignore your teacher.
You should pay attention to your teacher.
In our conversation, Susie says people should say, "Excuse me, I have to take
this call." Now "take this call" is an interesting phrase.
I think we should look at it.
Now people say this a lot.
If you take a call, you answer the phone call.
So you can say that you have to answer the call or take the call.
OK, friends, we have more to find out about in Conversation C, so let's take a
look at it now.
(Music).
When people eat together, they should talk to each other.
That's polite.
I know.
But some people have bad phone habits.
They're impolite.
They are.
If you want to be on your phone, eat alone!
(Background Noise).
Is that your phone?
Yes, it is.
Aren't you going to take that call?
No. That's rude.
I'm busy talking to you!
(Music).
When people eat together, they should talk to each other.
That's very important.
It is important.
When you eat with someone, you should be polite.
But the people Susie ate with were impolite.
They did not talk to her.
Katie, you just used our last key word.
Let's look at it together.
impolite.
impolite.
If you are impolite, you are rude.
So it's not good to be impolite to people.
That's right.
Don't be impolite when you eat with people.
Talk to them.
And of course, it's important not to be impolite anytime.
Say "Please" and "Thank you" to people.
That is very polite.
And like we learned in Conversation B, say "Excuse me." That is another way to
be polite.
If you need to get someone's attention, it's polite to say "Excuse me" before
you start talking.
That's right.
It is very polite to say "Excuse me" before you start to talk to somebody.
And right now we need to review our key words.
Let's get started.
Here is the first key word.
impolite.
impolite.
Don't be impolite. Say "Please.".
check.
check.
Please check your messages.
excuse.
excuse.
Excuse me, I need to leave now.
ignore.
ignore.
Kai didn't take the call. He ignored it.
rude.
rude.
Don't ignore me. That's rude!
OK, friends, I hope that that key word practice was helpful for you.
Try to say them as many times as you can.
They are good words to know.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we'll be rightback.
