You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we want to have fun learning English with you.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us today.
We're going to continue our topic ENTERTAINMENT today.
And we have part 2 of our lesson Let's Play a Game!
Let's Play a Game!
Now what kind of games are we talking about, Nathan?
Well, yesterday we were talking about some phone games.
And I think we will talk about some more today.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
It's great to be here with you.
Right now you should open up your LTE magazine and find today's "Let's Begin!"
reading.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Rob and Megan are teaching Ken a new game app.
It's called Draw This.
In this game they draw pictures.
Ken is downloading the game now.
He can play against them when the download is complete.
First, they play a practice game.
Ken taps the screen to get a word.
Then he draws it!
That sounds like a great game.
Let's learn about it in Conversation A.
(Music).
I'm playing another game of Wordy.
Who wants to play against me?
Maybe later, Ken.
Rob just showed me a new game!
It's called Draw This.
Cool! I'll download it now.
How do you play?
The game gives me a word like "horse." I have to draw a picture of it.
And I don't see the word.
So I have to guess the picture!
Today our friends are playing a picture game.
What kind of game were they playing yesterday, Nathan?
Oh. Um, let me think.
It was called Wordy.
So it was a word game.
Ken wants to play it again.
But he needs someone to play against him.
That's true.
And you just said one of today's key words.
Friends, let's look at it.
against.
against.
If you are against someone in a game, you don't want them to win.
You want to beat them.
And in a phone game like Wordy, two people play against each other.
In many sports, one team plays against another.
But people do not always just play against each other.
Sometimes people fight against each other.
That's not good, but it does happen.
And sometimes people argue against something.
You say why you think something is not good or not right.
But no one will play against Ken.
They are playing a different game today.
If you were playing this game, what would you have to do, Nathan?
Oh, well, I would have to guess the picture.
And that's our "Use It!" sentence.
I have to (verb) the (noun).
Like, I have to play the game.
Or, I have to read the book.
Or, I have to watch the movie.
And I have to go to the next conversation.
That's Conversation B.
Let's go there now.
(Music).
If Megan is right, we both get points!
You can draw well, Ken.
You'll be really good at this game!
I hope so!
OK, the download is complete.
What do I do now?
Make a username.
OK.
My username can be "Ken... is... the... best." (Background Noise).
Very funny, kenisthebest.
My username is "Megan99." Search for me, and we can play a game!
I found you!
Katie, you're really good at this game.
I thought you said you haven't played it before.
I haven't.
This is my first time.
Am I doing well?
Yeah, well, you're doing very well.
Oh, uh, Katie...
Uh, hi, friends.
We were just playing a game.
Katie is really good at it.
That means she can play it very well.
I'm surprised.
I'm usually bad at these games.
I don't play them well.
Now friends, can you use those phrases?
Good at or bad at something.
They're good to know.
But we also have some key words that are great for you to know, too.
Let's look at the first one.
download.
download.
This is something that you put on your computer from another place.
We usually get downloads from the Internet.
Apps are downloads that you put on your phone.
They come from app stores on the Internet.
Download can also be a verb.
Downloading is moving something onto your computer.
You can download songs or videos from the Internet.
Or you can even get them from a friend.
And you should pay for those downloads, friends.
Some downloads online are free, but they are often against the law.
If you don't pay for them, it's like stealing.
There is something else that I think you know about downloads.
Sometimes you have to wait a long time before a download is complete.
And that's our next key word.
complete.
complete.
If something is complete, it is done.
The job is complete.
That means the job is done.
Or the game is complete.
It's over.
But we can use this word in a different way, too.
Yes.
Complete can also mean that nothing is missing.
A complete pizza still has all of its pieces.
No one has eaten any of it.
And friends, the word "complete" can also be a verb.
You can complete something.
When you do your homework, you complete your homework.
And Conversation B is now complete.
We have completed talking about it.
So now it's time to go to Conversation C.
(Music).
Let's play a practice game first.
Great! Can I start?
Sure. Rob, you can help Ken.
Tap the screen here first.
Then the game will show you a word.
And I have to draw that word?
Right. But don't say the word!
Megan can't know it!
Hmm. This word is hard to draw.
Just try! I'm good at guessing!
Our friends have played a word game and a picture game.
I think both games are probably a lot of fun.
But which one do you think you would like more, Nathan?
Hmm.
Well, I think drawing is fun, but I don't know if I would like to draw on a
phone.
Word games are usually pretty fun for me, though.
So I think I would like Wordy more.
You might be right, Nathan.
I think it might take some practice to draw on your phone.
Now let's look at that key word.
practice.
practice.
Practice is when you do something so that you will get better at it.
Mmhm.
If you are on a sports team, you will need to go to a lot of practices.
And that's how you can get better at sports.
And you can also get better at working with your team.
But there are many other things that need a lot of practice.
If you're a singer, you will need to practice a lot, too.
Or if you are...
Wait, wait. Uh... Katie, our key word is a noun, but you just used it as a verb.
You will need to practice a lot.
So you can say: I practiced the song.
Or you can say: I went to tennis practice.
Hey, Nathan, I have an idea.
I'll say a sentence using "practice," and you tell me if it is a noun or a verb,
OK?
Um, sure.
That sounds like a great idea.
OK.
Ken needs to practice drawing on a screen.
Noun or verb?
Hmm. Ken needs to practice.
That's a verb.
And you used another key word, Katie.
You're right.
And you're right, Nathan.
It is a verb.
And I did use another key word.
screen.
screen.
A screen is what you look at on your TV, computer or your phone.
Yes. All of those things have screens.
And you know what?
If you are watching Let's Talk in English, you are looking at a screen.
Screens are usually made of glass.
Some TV screens are huge, and most phone screens are tiny.
They're all different sizes.
And Ken's phone has a touch screen.
You can touch the screen to do different things.
OK, friends, we are out of time.
So let's practice today's key words.
The first one is...
against.
against.
The two teams played against each other.
download.
download.
I have the download on my computer now.
complete.
complete.
My song is complete. I'll play it now!
practice.
practice.
Felix has drama practice after school.
screen.
screen.
My computer screen is broken.
OK, friends, those are all of today's key words.
Please practice them on your own, too.
But right now we need to take a short break.
We'll beback.
