You're watching Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here today at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we are excited to learn with you today.
Our new topic is CELEBRATIONS.
And the title of today's new lesson is Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!
Now, Nathan, isn't your birthday in September?
Um, yes, actually it is in September.
How did you know that, Katie?
Well, friends, my name is Nathan.
And I'm glad to be here with you today.
Now we need to look at our Let's Begin!
You can find it in your magazine.
And you can read it now with Katie.
Let's begin!
Everyone has a surprise for Megan.
They give her a birthday cake and a present.
There are candles on the cake.
Megan can blow out the candles.
Then she can cut the cake.
Megan is surprised.
But she has a surprise for her friends, too.
Hmm, I wonder what that surprise is.
Well, let's go to Conversation A now.
(Music).
Surprise!
Happy Birthday, Megan!
Oh! Wow!
Are you surprised?
Yes. I am surprised!
I am very surprised!
And you are very special.
Happy Birthday!
This is your first birthday here at the station.
So we planned a surprise!
And we have a cake for you.
I... Thank you, everyone.
I'm just so surprised!
Well, that's so fun.
This is Megan's first birthday at LTE TV.
And all of our friends there want to wish Megan a Happy Birthday.
But how can they do that?
They can have a party.
And they can make it a surprise.
I think that that's a great idea.
I think so, too.
But let's look at this key word together first.
surprise.
surprise.
A surprise is something that you do not know will happen.
You feel excited when it happens.
Megan did not know there would be a party for her.
It was a surprise.
That's a good surprise.
Katie, do you like surprises?
Yes, Nathan, I do like surprises.
When a surprise happens, it usually means that something good is happening.
But, friends, there can be bad surprises, too.
I don't like that.
A person may jump out and try to scare you.
That's not fun.
Oh, well... you don't like that kind of surprise? I think it's kind of fun.
Well, it's uh... it's fun to give the surprise anyway.
It... it may not be fun to be surprised that way, though.
Well, that's what I meant.
Now you said "surprised," Nathan.
That's a different way to use this word, friends.
Our key word "surprise" is a noun, but Nathan use "surprised" as an adjective.
And I can do it again, too.
I was surprised that he could sing.
But, uh, Katie, I want to talk about our next key word.
I... I think it's a pretty good one.
It is a good key word.
It's a good word to know and it tastes good, too.
What key word is it?
Let's find out.
cake.
cake.
A cake is something sweet to eat.
There are many kinds of cake.
Mmhm. There are chocolate cakes, white cake and lemon cakes, too.
I like a lemon cake a lot.
Do you have a favorite, Katie?
Well, my favorite is chocolate.
That is my favorite kind of cake.
Friends, do you have a favorite cake?
Now part of a cake is kind of like bread, but there's something very sweet on
the outside of the cake.
Right. It's kind of like a sauce, but it's very thick.
It can be different colors, too.
Actually, you can make it almost any color.
Um, friends, I'm starting to get hungry.
I... I think we should go to Conversation B now.
Blow out the candles on your cake.
There are a lot of candles!
Yes, there are. Thank you!
It's a chocolate cake.
That is your favorite.
Yes, it is.
How did you know?
We talked about cake last week.
Oh, right.
And lemon cake is your favorite.
They're still talking about cake.
And Megan talked about one of my favorite kinds.
I wish they would stop.
But, Nathan, this is a birthday lesson today.
You usually have cake on a birthday.
We haven't even talked about birthday candles yet.
You're right. Well, let's talk about that key word now.
candle.
candle.
A candle is a stick that you can put fire on.
The outside of a candle is soft and on the inside, there is a string that burns.
But what can you do with candles on birthdays, Nathan?
Did you really have to ask?
You put them on a birthday cake.
OK. Can we stop talking about cake now?
I'm already very hungry.
Not yet.
How many candles do you put on a birthday cake?
OK, OK.
If you are turning 25, you will put 25 candles on the cake.
The candles tell you how old you are.
You're right.
The candles tell you how old you are.
All right, friends, we're out of time.
So let's move on to Conversation C and talk about cake a little bit more.
(Music).
Cut the cake, Megan.
Then we can have some.
We have a present for you, too.
Here.
Thank you. You're all so nice.
So are you!
I'm very happy.
But can I tell you something?
Sure. What?
Today is not my birthday.
It's not?
No. My birthday was last week!
Oh... well, we can still celebrate.
Happy Birthday!
(Music).
Well, we find out that today isn't Megan's birthday.
But our friends can still eat some...
Katie, please don't say the word.
Let's... let's just talk about our next key word, OK?
I think it's cut.
OK, Nathan.
I didn't know you were that hungry.
Friends, let's look at this key word.
cut.
cut.
If you cut something, you use a knife to make pieces of it.
You can cut... um... something like a cake into pieces.
Katie is right.
We often cut things with a knife.
But you can use other things to cut, too.
Uh, we can cut paper with scissors.
And if something is soft, you can cut it with many different things.
I said you can cut something into pieces.
You can say this when you want to make many parts of something.
The parts are often the same size.
But you can also cut something up.
This means the same thing, but the pieces are probably different sizes.
And sometimes you just cut something.
You might need to cut some paper to put a present in.
And that's today's last key word.
So let's learn about it.
present.
present.
A present is something that someone gives you.
It is just for you.
That's right.
You don't have to pay for it.
It is a special gift.
We often give presents for birthdays.
It's fun to get presents, but it's also fun to give someone a present.
Yes, it is.
It is fun to give people presents.
I love to see someone get something that they really like.
But sometimes it's hard to buy presents for people.
I know.
You want to get them something different, but you want to get them something
they will like, also.
It can be hard to choose.
Friends, I wish that we could see what Megan's present was.
I wonder what she will get.
I guess we'll never know.
Now, Nathan, are you still very hungry right now?
Uh, no. I'm OK now.
Thanks.
I think I'm ready to practice our key words, so maybe we should start doing that
now.
Here is your first key word.
surprise.
surprise.
I have a surprise for you!
cake.
cake.
Eat some chocolate cake.
present.
present.
Give Tim a present for his birthday.
candle.
candle.
Put five candles on her birthday cake.
cut.
cut.
Pete cut the apple with a knife.
All right, friends, those are all of your key words, so make sure that you
practice them at home.
They're important to learn.
We're going to take a short break now and go get Nathan some cake.
But we'll be right back afterthis.
