Hello, and welcome to our Saturday review show.
Thanks for joining me here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, one of your Let's Talk teachers.
It's time for us to review.
Last week we learned about Moon Festival, a holiday in Asia.
Moon Festival is all about the moon.
But what are some things we can do to celebrate?
Mark was also looking for a Chinese supermarket.
And we learned about directions.
Do you like GPS devices?
Pay attention so you can answer some questions after we review the
conversations.
(Music).
Can you come to my apartment on Thursday night, Ken?
Sure, Rob. Why?
Thursday is Moon Festival!
We can have a barbecue.
OK! That's great.
Can we eat mooncakes?
How do you know about mooncakes?
Last Moon Festival, I tried some mooncakes.
They were really good!
They are good!
What else can we eat at your barbecue?
Lots of meat!
We can have beef and chicken.
We can have vegetables, too.
Great!
I'm ready for some good food!
Can I bring anything?
How about some drinks?
OK, sure.
Do people always eat big meals on Moon Festival?
They usually do.
Barbecues are popular on Moon Festival.
What else do people do for Moon Festival?
They look at the moon.
The moon is very big and very bright on Moon Festival.
But we may not see the moon on Thursday.
Why not?
The weather will be cloudy on Thursday.
That's OK.
We can still eat lots of good food!
I'm excited about your barbecue, Rob!
Me, too!
What can I bring?
Well, I'll buy beef, chicken and pork.
What else can we grill?
Shrimp!
I love to grill shrimp!
I didn't think about seafood.
Good idea!
Great!
I'll bring shrimp!
We can grill some corn, too.
I can bring some!
Great! Thanks, friends!
We're going to have a good time.
Tell me more about Moon Festival.
I don't know much about it.
It's a holiday to celebrate the moon.
Is Moon Festival always on September 19?
No.
It's a lunar holiday, so the date changes every year.
But there's always a full moon on the day of the holiday.
And it's always in the fall?
Right!
Moon Festival is also called Mid-Autumn Festival.
It's always in September or October.
Will there be anything sweet at your barbecue?
Yes! We'll have mooncakes.
Those are traditional, and they're usually sweet.
They're usually sweet?
So they're sometimes not?
Not always.
You'll have to try them.
Interesting.
I'd like to try them.
Will we have any fruit?
Yes, pomelos!
Many people enjoy pomelos on Moon Festival.
Great!
We can try those, too!
Hey, Susie, can you help me?
Sure. What do you need, Mark?
Where is Jackson Street?
Is it far from here?
Jackson Street is not too far.
What are you looking for?
There's a new restaurant on Jackson Street.
Maybe I can try it.
What's the address of the restaurant?
The address is 617 Jackson Street.
Can I walk there?
Yes, you can!
Great! Which way do I walk?
Go out of the TV station and turn left.
Walk to Maple Street.
And then turn right?
Yes. How did you know?
I'm looking at a map on my cellphone!
Then why are you asking me?
Maps can't tell you everything!
But they can tell you a lot!
Sometimes I see a place on a map.
I think, "That place isn't far. I can walk there.".
But then the place is really far!
Right!
Yesterday, I went to a store.
I walked for almost an hour!
Well, you can walk to the restaurant on Jackson Street in about 15 minutes.
So what is this new restaurant?
Texas Tom's!
They have food from Texas!
Hi, Mark.
What are you looking at?
Hey, Ken. I'm looking at an online map.
I'm trying to find a supermarket.
Which supermarket?
Wang's Chinese Supermarket.
Do you know it?
I do.
I went there once.
It's not far from here.
How do I get there?
You can walk.
Or you can take the subway.
Can I get there faster on the subway?
Yes.
But from here the walk isn't long, either.
How do I walk there?
When you leave the TV station, turn right.
Then walk to Green Road and turn left.
Green Road.
Is there a convenience store on that corner?
Yes!
After you turn left, walk about 10 minutes to Hope Park.
Wang's Supermarket is across from the park.
Great. I can find that.
Maybe I'll walk.
OK.
But if you go by subway, take the orange line to the Hope Park Station.
How many stops is that from here?
Just two stops.
Will you buy a lot of food?
Maybe.
Then walk there and take the subway back!
Good idea.
Then I don't have to walk and carry everything so far!
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk!
So, how do you get directions?
Do you use GPS?
Well, here to tell us all about GPS is my special guest for today.
Mr. GPS, Gary P. Smith.
Welcome, Mr. Gary P. Smith!
Many people have GPS devices in their cars.
Or they use smartphones with GPS.
That's right, Rob.
With GPS, people can get from place to place easily.
They don't need to use a paper map!
Yes.
I use my phone's GPS to get directions.
With GPS, you can get maps and directions to almost anywhere.
Are there any bad things about GPS?
Yes. Sometimes your GPS device can lead you to a road that doesn't exist.
Or a road that is closed.
Yes.
Your GPS device doesn't always have the latest road information.
Also, a GPS device can sometimes be dangerous.
How can they be dangerous?
Sometimes people look at the device too much.
Then they don't watch the road.
That can cause accidents.
Do you use GPS to get to places?
Today, many smartphones have GPS.
And many people have GPS devices for their cars.
If you use GPS, you can get from place to place easily.
You don't have to carry or use a paper map.
GPS will give you directions to almost anywhere.
But GPS isn't perfect.
Sometimes it can lead you to a road that doesn't exist.
Your GPS device doesn't always have the latest information.
GPS devices can also sometimes cause accidents.
It's time to answer questions and see how much you remember from this week's
lessons.
Chris will be helping me.
That's right!
As the Jungle Cafe bird, it's my duty to help you review.
Well, thank you, Chris.
OK, friends, let's get started.
We started this week by talking about the Moon Festival.
That's a special festival.
That's right.
And it's also called the Mid-Autumn Festival.
That's right, Chris.
So here is the first question.
What are some things you do for the Moon Festival?
Hmm. Well, I think you look at the moon because that's the name of the festival.
That's right.
You do look at the moon.
And what else?
Oh, uh, I remember now.
Uh, you... barbecue and eat a lot of food.
That's exactly right!
I love the Moon Festival.
Um. You like to eat, don't you, Katie?
Always, Chris.
Always.
OK, let's move on to the next question.
Let's hear it. Let's hear it.
OK. Here is the question.
What is Mark trying to find?
Hmm. Well, I think he's trying to find a supermarket.
He must want to buy food.
That's right.
Mark is looking for a supermarket.
He's using an online map to look for it.
And he can take the subway and walk to get there, right?
That's right.
There are a couple different ways he can go.
Well, at least Ken gave him directions.
That's true.
OK, friends, let's take a short break now.
We'll be rightback!
