You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And we have a great lesson for you today.
Our topic is still AROUND TOWN.
And we have a new lesson for you called GPS: Good or Bad?
GPS: Good or Bad?
Do you use a GPS, Nathan?
Hmm, not much.
But let me try to remember first.
Hi, friends, my name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here.
I don't use a GPS, but I have just a few times to find something nearby.
OK, friends, we are going to learn a lot today about GPS.
So let's go to Conversation A right now and get started.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk!
So, how do you get directions?
Do you use GPS?
Well, here to tell us all about GPS is my special guest for today.
Mr. GPS: Gary P. Smith!
Welcome, Mr. Gary P. Smith!
Many people have GPS devices in their cars.
Or they use smartphones with GPS.
That's right, Rob.
With GPS, people can get from place to place easily.
They don't need to use a paper map!
Yes. I use my phone's GPS to get directions.
With GPS, you can get maps and directions to almost anywhere.
Gary P. Smith is here to tell us about GPS devices.
I think they're a great way to find a new place.
I think they're useful, too.
I have only used one in a car.
Have you used one on your phone, Katie?
Yes, I have.
The GPS on my phone is very helpful when I am lost and when I'm not close to my
computer.
It's good to have GPS when I am walking to a new place.
I think they're usually pretty clear.
Mmhm.
It's not hard to understand what you are supposed to do.
That's because GPS devices give very good directions.
And, Nathan, that's a key word.
Friends, let's take a look.
directions.
directions.
Directions tell you how to go somewhere.
GPS directions will tell you which road to use and where to turn.
But when a person gives directions, it may be very different.
I could say, "Turn left after the movie theater." But a GPS device cannot do
that.
No. A GPS device says things like turn left in 200 meters.
But it also shows you a map to make everything more clear.
Another good thing about GPS devices is that they can get you almost anywhere.
That's pretty cool.
It is. But let's talk about this key word.
anywhere.
anywhere.
Anywhere is all places or any place.
A GPS is a computer.
It knows how to get almost anywhere.
I wish I could do that.
I could go anywhere I want.
Katie, if you could go anywhere, where would you choose?
I would probably go somewhere in Europe.
Or I would go to Conversation B.
Let's do that now.
(Music).
Are there any bad things about GPS?
Yes. Sometimes your GPS device can lead you to a road that doesn't exist.
Or a road that is closed.
Yes. Your GPS device doesn't always have the latest road information.
Also, a GPS device can sometimes be dangerous.
How can they be dangerous?
Sometimes people look at the device too much.
Then they don't watch the road.
That can cause accidents.
Well, I thought GPS devices were really good.
I didn't think about the problems that they might give you.
Well, computers are not always right.
A person can give you bad directions.
But a GPS can lead you the wrong way, too.
Oh. Well, let's learn about that key word you just used, Katie.
lead.
lead.
If you lead other people, you show them which way to go.
Other people will follow you when you lead.
Leading is not only used to show people how to get somewhere, though.
Oh, no. You can show people many things by leading.
Your boss leads your company.
And your parents lead your family.
But a GPS device just leads you to a place.
Sometimes it could take you to a road that doesn't exist.
And that is a problem.
And that is a hard key word, too.
We should talk about it.
exist.
exist.
If something exists, it is real.
For example, dogs exist, but blue dogs do not exist.
Wait. You haven't seen a blue dog, have you, Katie?
No. I... I've never seen a blue dog.
I'm pretty sure blue dogs don't exist.
But not so many years ago, GPS did not exist, either.
But now we can all use it.
So GPS can take you to things that don't exist.
You cannot use a road that is not real.
But how does that happen, Katie?
Well, sometimes a GPS device does not have the latest information.
Another key word.
Let's look at this one.
latest.
latest.
If something is the latest, it is very new.
If GPS doesn't have the latest information, it could take you to strange places.
That's true.
And sometimes I like to see or read the latest news online or watch it on TV.
And some people like to know about the latest fashion, the newest clothes.
Fashion changes cause some people to buy new clothes.
Now, just one more key word for today.
cause.
cause.
If you cause something, you make it happen.
GPS devices can cause accidents if you look at them too much when you're driving
a car.
Or a GPS might cause you to take more time to go somewhere.
Yes.
GPS devices don't always know the fastest way to go.
But I think GPS can also cause you to feel more confident when you travel.
That's true.
GPS devices can cause you to feel more confident.
And I think "Read it!" will cause us to be more comfortable with English, too.
So let's read it!
(Music).
Do you use GPS to get to places?
Today, many smartphones have GPS.
And many people have GPS devices for their cars.
If you use GPS, you can get from place to place easily.
You don't have to carry or use a paper map.
GPS will give you directions to almost anywhere.
But GPS isn't perfect.
Sometimes it can lead you to a road that doesn't exist.
Your GPS device doesn't always have the latest information.
GPS devices can also sometimes cause accidents.
Well, friends, one good thing about GPS is that you do... you can get from place
to place easily.
What does that mean, Nathan?
We say "place to place" for one place to another place.
Maybe you haven't gone from this place to that place, but a GPS can tell you
how.
Yes. A GPS can do that.
And then you don't have to carry a map.
But, friends, when we say "carry," we don't just mean to hold something in your
hand.
If I say that I carry a map, it means that I keep a map with me most of the
time.
That's right.
And, friends, here at Let's Talk, we practice our key words every day.
So let's do that right now.
The first key word is...
directions.
directions.
Where is your office? I need directions.
anywhere.
anywhere.
We can have dinner anywhere.
lead.
lead.
You lead, and I'll follow you.
exist.
exist.
That website doesn't exist anymore.
latest.
latest.
What's the latest news about the war?
cause.
cause.
Bad weather causes a lot of problems.
And practicing your key words causes you to get better, so make sure and do that
at home.
We're going to take a short break.
But we'll be right back afterthis.
