Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
We are excited to be here to teach you some English and to have a good time,
too.
My name is Nathan.
And I think that we will learn some more great things about Moon Festival today
because our topic is HOLIDAYS, and our lesson is called Moon Festival.
Moon Festival.
Katie, what do you like most about Moon Festival?
Well, Nathan, we all know that I like to eat.
So I like the food at Moon Festival.
I love barbecue.
So that is my favorite thing about Moon Festival.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I am your other LTE teacher.
We have a great lesson for you today.
So let's get started.
Take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Carol wants to grill seafood at Rob's barbecue.
Susie wants to grill corn.
Will there be anything sweet?
Yes, they will have mooncakes.
Those are traditional.
They can try pomelos, too!
Moon Festival is also called Mid-Autumn Festival.
There is always a full moon on the day of the holiday.
Well, friends, this will be a great lesson.
So let's get started with Conversation A right now.
(Music).
I'm excited about your barbecue, Rob!
Me, too!
What can I bring?
Well, I'll buy beef, chicken and pork.
What else can we grill?
Shrimp!
I love to grill shrimp!
I didn't think about seafood!
Good idea!
Great! I'll bring shrimp!
We can grill some corn, too.
I can bring some!
Great! Thanks, friends!
We're going to have a good time.
If you were watching Let's Talk in English yesterday, we showed you an American
barbecue.
But today we are going to show you an Asian barbecue.
A lot of things are the same.
You can cook any kind of meat.
Beef, chicken and pork are all OK.
And you still cook them over a fire.
We are waiting for it to get hot.
But the barbecues look very different.
In the United States, we have big machines for barbecues.
Here, your barbecues are usually smaller.
So you also grill smaller pieces of meat, but you can eat more pieces.
We grill big pieces of meat, but we only eat one or two in America.
Now let's talk about today's first key word.
grill.
grill.
This is the way you cook on a barbecue.
When you grill, you put your meat over a fire.
But you can also just put your food on something very hot.
That is also called grilling.
You don't have to have a fire.
But you can eat grilled food if you want to eat healthier.
Grilling food takes some of the fat out of it.
And friends, it's also good to know that grill can be a noun.
You can call this a grill.
And you grill food on a grill.
Well, Katie, I think that the fire is hot enough.
Uh, what should we have on our grill?
Well, we can put some pork on it and some corn and... and how about some
seafood?
Yes, we could grill some seafood.
It tastes great.
And it's a key word, too.
seafood.
seafood.
Can you guess what seafood is, friends?
Yes. It's food from the sea.
All fish is seafood.
Some kinds of fish don't live in the sea, but we still call it seafood.
Shrimp is another kind of seafood.
So we can try to grill some fish and maybe some shrimp, too!
This will be new for me.
I don't think I've grilled fish at an Asian barbecue before.
It might be hard.
Well, friends, why don't you go to Conversation B.
We will be here getting ready to grill.
(Music).
Tell me more about Moon Festival.
I don't know much about it.
It's a holiday to celebrate the moon.
Is Moon Festival always on September 19?
No. It's a lunar holiday, so the date changes every year.
But there's always a full moon on the day of the holiday.
And it's always in the fall?
Right!
Moon Festival is also called Mid-Autumn Festival.
It's always in September or October.
Wow! There's a lot to learn about Moon Festival.
I knew the moon was important, but I didn't know the Moon Festival could be in
different months.
Yes. It's in September or in October every year.
Friends, always say "in" a month, not "on" a month.
"In" September.
Not "on" September.
So Moon Festival is not on the same day every year.
The festival is on the lunar calendar.
That's right.
The Chinese lunar calendar is based on the moon.
The month starts on a new moon.
You can't really see a new moon.
And the month ends on a full moon.
A full moon shows the moon's whole shape.
Now, Moon Festival is not on the same day, but it is always in the autumn.
And friends, that is an important key word for today.
autumn.
autumn.
Autumn is the part of the year after summer.
And what happens in autumn, Nathan?
In autumn, the weather starts to get colder.
The leaves on the trees change color.
And food that you grew is picked.
Yes. And the last thing is very important.
One reason for the festival is because food is picked at this time of year.
Moon Festival is also called Mid-Autumn festival.
And that's today's "Use It!" sentence.
A is also called B, like autumn is also called fall.
All right, friends, that's all the time that we have.
Let's go to Conversation C.
(Music).
Will there be anything sweet at your barbecue?
Yes! We'll have mooncakes.
Those are traditional, and they're usually sweet.
They're usually sweet?
So they're sometimes not?
Not always.
You'll have to try them.
Interesting.
I'd like to try them.
Will we have any fruit?
Yes, pomelos!
Many people enjoy pomelos on Moon Festival.
Great!
We can try those, too!
I think that some of our food is ready to eat.
We wish that we could share it with you, friends.
So what should we put on the barbecue now, Katie?
Uh, I'm... I'm not sure.
We have some meat and we have some vegetables.
Is there anything sweet we can grill?
Hmm, it's a good question.
Well, let's... Let's talk about that key word first.
sweet.
sweet.
Sweet is a taste.
Sugar is very sweet.
Many kinds of fruit are also sweet.
Most people like to eat sweet things.
That's why we sometimes have something sweet after a meal.
But things can be too sweet.
That's true.
If something is too sweet, it can make you feel sick.
I know that people in Asia often don't like things that are very sweet.
So, Nathan, is there anything sweet to grill at an Asian barbecue?
Well, not much.
But we could grill sweet potatoes.
Oh, or (Chinese).
That's Chinese New Year cake.
It's made from rice, but it's sweet.
Mmm, I... I would like to try that.
I guess...
Oh, and I guess we should have some mooncakes, too, right?
Those might be sweet enough.
I think so.
(Chinese) and mooncakes are both very traditional.
Now we should try both...
Oh... I just used today's last key word.
We're almost done with our conversations.
Anyway, this key word is...
traditional.
traditional.
Traditional things have been made or done for a long time.
That's right.
There are traditional foods.
Every place has some traditional food.
Barbecue is kind of a traditional food in the United States.
No other place in the world has the same kind of barbecue.
There are also traditional clothes and traditional buildings.
And some things that you do are traditional as well.
On LTE TV, it is very traditional to practice key words together.
Why don't we do that now.
Here is the first key word.
grill.
grill.
I want to grill some hamburgers!
seafood.
seafood.
We ate a lot of seafood at the beach.
sweet.
sweet.
This tea is sweet. It has lots of sugar.
traditional.
traditional.
Do you enjoy traditional Chinese music?
autumn.
autumn.
Autumn is cooler than summer.
Now we are done with our conversations.
But don't worry, friends, we have more to talk about.
Let's take a break fornow.
