You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And we're excited to learn with you today.
Our topic is HOLIDAYS.
And we have a new lesson for you called Moon Festival.
Moon Festival.
Now, Nathan, what do you think of when you hear Moon Festival?
Hmm. Well, I think of a lot of things.
But I do think of mooncakes for sure.
You always have mooncakes for Moon Festival.
Hi, friends. My name is Nathan.
Are you ready to learn some English today?
Well, we can start by reading our Let's Begin from our LTE magazines.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Moon Festival is on Thursday.
Rob can have a barbecue at his apartment.
Rob, Ken and other friends can have a big meal.
They can eat moon cakes and lots of meat.
They can also look at the moon.
It is very bright on Moon Festival.
But the weather might be cloudy on Thursday.
All right, let's get started learning with Conversation A.
(Music).
Can you come to my apartment on Thursday night, Ken?
Sure, Rob. Why?
Thursday is Moon Festival!
We can have a barbecue.
OK! That's great.
Can we eat mooncakes?
How do you know about mooncakes?
Last Moon Festival, I tried some mooncakes.
They were really good!
They are good!
Moon Festival is coming.
Are you excited, Nathan?
I am excited.
Moon Festival is a special time in Asia.
You can look up at a beautiful full moon.
The moon is always full on Moon Festival.
The moon really is beautiful.
And it's one of our key words today, too.
moon.
moon.
The moon moves around the Earth.
We can see it at night.
And sometimes it is full.
That means that you can see its whole shape.
When the moon is full, it looks like a ball.
Usually we can only see part of the moon.
It can look very different.
But we can see a full moon about once a month.
There are also many stories and songs about the moon.
Yep. You are right, Katie.
People really like the moon.
I think I should look at it more often.
Well, that is a good idea.
Now friends, on Moon Festival, families also spend time together.
They often have barbecues.
And that's another key word.
So let's look at it.
barbecue.
barbecue.
A barbecue is when you cook food outside over a fire.
And we have a short way to spell this word...
BBQ.
We don't say BBQ, but we do write the word this way often.
That's right.
Also, the word barbecue is used for a few things.
You can have a barbecue.
You can also cook on a barbecue.
It is the machine or place where you have the fire.
And when you cook your food, you can also call the food "barbecue." Sometimes we
say: Let's have some barbecue.
So you can have a barbecue on Moon Festival.
But you have to have mooncakes, too.
It's not Moon Festival without mooncakes.
Wait, Katie. How... how do you know about mooncakes?
Well, Nathan, I lived in...
Oh. Oh, wait! Here you're using our "Use It!" sentence.
Friends, you can use it about people, like:
How do you know about Tony?
You can also use it about places.
How do you know about that restaurant?
That's a good "Use It!" sentence to know.
Try to use it at home.
Now, friends, let's learn some more in Conversation B.
(Music).
What else can we eat at your barbecue?
Lots of meat!
We can have beef and chicken.
We can have vegetables, too.
Great!
I'm ready for some good food!
Can I bring anything?
How about some drinks?
OK, sure.
Do people always eat big meals on Moon Festival?
They usually do.
Barbecues are popular on Moon Festival.
Do you know what we are having today, friends?
We are having an American barbecue.
And you can also call the machine that you cook on a barbecue.
We can cook beef, chicken and pork on the barbecue.
When the meat is cooked, we also call that barbecue.
Now, let's talk about the key word that Katie just used.
meat.
meat.
Meat is the part of animals that we eat most often.
Now Katie, do you have a favorite meat?
Well, I love to eat chicken.
That's my favorite meat.
And, friends, it is good to eat some meat every day.
It gives your body some things that it needs.
But don't forget to have some fruits and vegetables, too.
Now we can cook some meat on our barbecue right now.
There is a fire inside barbecues.
And we can put the meat on top of the fire.
Hey, Katie, I think I can cook some chicken.
Oh, well, thank you.
That's my favorite meat.
I feel bad, though, Nathan.
I didn't bring anything.
Should I...
Should I go get something?
No. No. That's... That's OK.
When you go to a friend's house to eat, you can ask if you should take anything
with you.
You can ask by saying, "Can I bring anything?" Oh, Katie, I... I remembered
something that we need.
How about some fruit?
Oh, sure! I can go get some fruit.
Now friends, Nathan said, "How about some fruit?" He's asking if I can bring
some fruit.
Fruit will be good to have for our meal.
And that's another key word.
meal.
meal.
A meal is when you eat.
We often have three meals a day.
We have one meal in the morning.
What is that called, Katie?
Well, that's called breakfast.
And then, we have a meal in the middle of the day.
And, friends, that is called...
Lunch.
Now there's one more meal late in the day...
And it's called dinner or supper.
But you just need to remember the word "meal." All of these are meals.
That's right.
So when are we going to have our meal, Nathan?
Well, um...
I think we need to wait until after our lesson.
But look at what we can have at an American barbecue.
At American barbecues, we often have hamburgers.
This is a very big hamburger.
But sometimes we have big ones.
And, Katie, what is this?
We can also have...
Well, friends, that is called a hot dog.
In a hot dog, you have a piece of meat inside of a bun.
And there's one more piece of meat.
Nathan, what is that?
Yes, there is.
It's Katie's chicken.
I think Katie is getting hungry.
So we should go to Conversation C and finish the lesson.
What else do people do for Moon Festival?
They look at the moon!
The moon is very big and very bright on Moon Festival.
But we may not see the moon on Thursday.
Why not?
The weather will be cloudy on Thursday.
That's OK.
We can still eat lots of good food!
So on Moon Festival, we can have a barbecue.
Nathan and I are waiting for ours to cook.
And we can also eat some mooncakes on Moon Festival.
Now, Nathan, you have eaten a lot of mooncakes.
What kinds of mooncakes are there?
Well, there are many kinds.
Some have red bean or green bean, some have pineapple.
Some also have meat or egg in them.
Which kind do you want to try, Katie?
Well, I think I would like to try a mooncake with pineapple in it.
That sounds delicious.
And friends, on Moon Festival, there are also many stories you can listen to
about the moon.
Yes. There is an old story about a beautiful woman that lives on the moon.
And we can sing songs about the moon, too, Katie.
Yeah... I don't know about that.
I would rather see the lanterns.
Many people make beautiful lanterns to put lights inside for Moon Festival.
Lantern Festival is another name for Moon Festival.
Well, that's a good idea, too.
It's beautiful to see the bright lanterns at night.
Well, you used our last key word, Nathan.
Friends, let's talk about it.
bright.
bright.
If something is bright, light comes from it.
Lanterns are bright because of the lights or fired... fire inside of them.
It's wonderful when the moon is bright.
But sometimes the sun is also very bright.
And I don't always like that as much.
Yes. You shouldn't look at the sun.
It's too bright.
Sometimes we say colors are bright as well.
But right now, we should practice our key words together.
Let's get started.
Here is your first key word.
moon.
moon.
Look at the moon! It's so big tonight.
barbecue.
barbecue.
Let's have a barbecue tonight.
meal.
meal.
Most people eat three meals every day.
meat.
meat.
Chicken is my favorite meat.
bright.
bright.
The lamp is too bright.
OK, friends, those are all of your key words.
I hope that you practice them with us.
They will be very helpful for you.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
But we'll be right back afterthis.
