You're watching Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, one of your Let's Talk teachers, and we hope that you're ready
to learn with us today.
Our topic is still ENTERTAINMENT.
And we have part two of our lesson: Let's Go to a Concert!
Let's Go to a Concert!
Nathan, what is your favorite thing about concerts?
Well, when I enjoy music, I'm usually by myself.
But at a concert, many people can enjoy music together.
That's great.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Nathan, and I am very glad to be here with you today.
Now why don't you open up your LTE magazine and read along with Katie?
She will read our Let's Begin for today.
Let's begin!
Megan really enjoyed Zoe's concert.
Her seat was far from the stage, but Megan only paid $15 for her ticket.
She was lucky.
The music wasn't too soft or too loud.
Zoe sang her new song!
She is very talented.
She plays the piano, too.
Susie loves Zoe's songs.
Zoe sang many songs from her new album at the concert.
Well, let's hear Megan talk some more about the concert in Conversation A.
(Music).
Good morning, Susie. Good morning, Ken.
Good morning, Megan.
How was the concert last night?
It was great!
I really enjoyed it.
Where did you sit?
I sat in the back of the park.
That's far from the stage.
Was the music too soft?
No. It was perfect.
It wasn't too soft or too loud.
Megan went to the concert last night, and she says that she really enjoyed it.
So she liked it a lot.
And then Susie asks her where she sat.
And Megan sat in the back of the park.
But that's far from the stage.
And that's our first key word today.
Well, friends, let's learn about this key word.
far.
far.
If you are far from something, you are not close to it.
America is far from Asia.
But Nathan is not far away from me right now.
He is close to me.
That's right.
Now we say this two ways.
We can say I am far from something or I am far away from something.
They mean the same thing.
But it is common to say "far away." Now Megan was far from the stage.
She was in the back of the park.
She was not close to the stage, so it might have been hard to see or hear Zoe.
That's right.
At a concert, I don't like to sit far away from the stage because I like to be
able to see and hear the singer.
If you sit far from the stage, it might be hard to hear - the music might be too
soft.
And that's another key word for today.
soft.
soft.
If a sound or music is soft, that means it is hard for you to hear - the sound
is too low.
You might play music softly when you are on the MRT so you do not bother a lot
of people.
Or if you are watching TV, the sound might be too soft.
That's why you turn it up.
That's right.
When we use the word "soft" this way, we also mean that the sound is not noticed
easily.
It's easy to miss.
But Megan says the music was perfect.
It wasn't too soft or too loud.
So it was OK that she was sitting far from the stage.
It did not bother Megan.
Friends, let's go to Conversation B now and see what else happened at Zoe's
concert.
(Music).
Did Zoe sing her new song?
Yes, she did.
The song sounded amazing!
I like Zoe.
I love all her songs.
She writes all her songs.
Did you know that?
Yes. She's very talented.
Does she play any instruments?
Yes. She plays piano, guitar and violin.
Wow, she is very talented!
Yes. She often plays the piano when she sings!
Ken asks if Zoe sang her new song.
That is a key word for today.
song.
song.
A song is something that you sing.
People who are in a band or in choir sing songs.
But really anyone can sing songs.
Musicians usually come out with new songs very often.
And Megan thinks Zoe's new songs sounded amazing.
She really liked it.
And often people who are in bands write their own songs.
Writing a song is hard work.
It's like writing a poem, and it takes time.
That's right.
And Susie says that Zoe is very talented.
Now Nathan, what does the word "talented" mean?
Well, talented is not a key word, but it's an important word to talk about.
Talented means that you are good at something.
If you're a good singer, you could also say that you're a talented singer.
If you're good at speaking a language, you can say you're talented at languages.
That's right.
And Zoe is so talented that she also plays a few instruments.
We find out that she plays the piano, the guitar and the violin.
Wow, Zoe plays a lot of instruments, and one of them is a key word, too.
It's piano.
piano.
A piano is a large instrument.
And when you play a piano, you sit on a bench and hit the keys with your fingers
to make music.
That's right.
The piano is my favorite instrument.
It plays beautiful music.
Do you know how to play the piano, Nathan?
Well, I don't know how to play the piano.
But my mom is a very good piano player.
The piano is a hard instrument to play, but it makes really good music.
And you can sing while you play the piano.
That's what Zoe does.
So it sounds like Zoe really is very talented.
Let's go to Conversation C and learn some more about this singer.
(Music).
Did she sing many songs from her new album?
Yes. She sang most of the songs from it.
Did you pay a lot of money for your ticket?
No. I only paid $15.
That's a great deal!
Yes, I was really lucky.
Maybe I can go to her concert next time!
Me, too.
Sure! We can all go together.
Conversation C starts with a question:
Did she sing many songs from her new album?
And that's our next key word.
album.
album.
An album is a collection of music put together by a singer or band.
That's right.
Many bands have a few different albums.
There are many different songs on musical albums - usually 10 or 12.
It usually takes a long time for bands to make a new album.
That's right.
And we find out that Zoe sang most of the new songs from her album.
And that's today's "Use It!" sentence.
So let's try to use it!
I ate most of the cookies.
I drank most of the soda.
Wow, Katie, you must have been hungry.
Just kidding.
Now here's another "Use It!" sentence.
I saw most of the sights in the city.
Now friends, you can try to use it at home.
Later we find out that Megan only paid $15 for her tickets.
That's really cheap, and that's why Susie says it's a great deal.
Now Nathan, what is a deal?
Well, if you get a deal on something, that means you get a good price for it.
At a store, you may want to buy something, but it's expensive.
But when it goes on sale, you get a deal on it.
And because she got a deal, Megan says she was really lucky.
And that's the last key word.
lucky.
lucky.
If you are lucky, then good things happen to you without you having to make it
happen.
Mmhm.
Being lucky can mean that one day you find money on the street, or you might
meet someone famous.
Or you could get a good deal on something like Megan did.
That's another way to be lucky.
And if you enter and win a contest, you might be lucky, too.
But friends, you are lucky now.
It's time to review today's key words.
Say them with us.
Here is the first key word.
far.
far.
I walked too far. Where am I now?
lucky.
lucky.
Dan is lucky. He won a car.
soft.
soft.
Lisa has a soft voice. It is not loud.
song.
song.
My favorite song is Amazing Grace.
piano.
piano.
Does Chris play piano or guitar?
album.
album.
The Beatles' Let It Be is a great album.
I thinks so, too.
What's your favorite album, friends?
Well, right now let's take a short break.
We'll see yousoon.
