This is Let's Talk in English.
Welcome to our show.
Today we have a great lesson to teach you.
Hi, I'm your teacher, and my name is Nathan.
Now our new topic for today is ENTERTAINMENT.
And the title of our lesson is Let's Go to a Concert!
Sounds like a good idea.
Let's go to a concert.
Katie, do you like concerts?
Oh, I really like concerts.
I think that concerts are fun because you can go and listen to music and watch
the singers perform.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie, and I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
We have a great lesson, and it's time to get started.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Zoe is in town.
She is a jazz singer.
Megan has a ticket to her concert in Union Park.
Ken has a ticket to a different concert.
The band is called Tune.
They play rock music.
Mark likes classical music concerts.
He plays the violin.
He can join the city orchestra.
OK, friends, let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hi, Ken.
Hi, Mark.
Hi, Megan.
Are you excited about something?
Yes!
My favorite singer is in town!
That's great.
Who is your favorite singer?
Zoe.
She's from New Orleans.
What kind of music does she sing?
She sings jazz.
I love her voice.
It's really pretty.
In Conversation A, Megan is excited.
But what is she excited about, Katie?
Well, she is excited because her favorite singer is in town.
And hey, I think that that is a key word.
You're right, Katie.
Thank you very much.
This key word is...
town.
town.
A town is somewhere that people live.
Towns are smaller than cities and usually do not have as many people.
That's right.
Taipei is a big city.
But there are many small towns around Taipei that people live in.
I lived in a small town in America.
It did not have very many people in it.
And Megan says her favorite singer is in town.
We use the phrase "in town" to say when someone is visiting.
If I go to America, I tell my friends that I will be in town.
I will be visiting.
That's right.
And next weekend my parents are visiting.
They will be in town next week.
Well friends, after that, Mark says our "Use It!" sentence when he asks Megan,
"Who is your favorite singer?" Let's try to use it!
So who is your favorite (blank)?
Like, who is your favorite person?
That's kind of a hard question.
How about, who is your favorite basketball player?
Or, who is your favorite actress?
Good job, friends.
Say your own "Use It!" sentence at home today.
We find out Zoe is from New Orleans.
That's a city in America.
What kind of music does she sing?
Well, first, let's look at that key word.
music.
music.
Music is the sound people make when they sing or when they play an instrument.
That's right.
There are many different kinds of music.
There is country music.
Here is a short example.
Oh, OK.
Yep. Yep, that sounds a lot like country music to me.
That's right.
There is rock music.
See?
Yep.
Yep, you're right. That sounds like rock music, too.
That's right.
Rock music is very loud, friends.
And then the last kind that I have is pop music.
(Music).
Oh.
I think maybe some of you know that song.
It's very popular.
It's a pop song.
That's right.
Pop music is often short for popular music because a lot of people like it.
Now my favorite kind of music is country.
What about you, Nathan?
I like many kinds.
But I do like jazz a lot, and that's the kind of music that Zoe sings.
Maybe we'll learn some more about her in Conversation B.
Is she doing a concert?
Yes! It's tonight in Union Park.
I have a ticket.
Fun!
I have a ticket to a concert on Sunday.
Oh? What concert?
It's a rock concert.
The band Tune is playing.
Rock bands are loud.
But they sound great live.
Not to me.
I like classical music concerts.
In Conversation B, Mike asks Megan, "Is she doing a concert?" That is a key
word, so let's take a look.
concert.
concert.
You go to a concert to listen to someone sing or play music.
You go to a concert to watch a band.
Right.
And concerts are a lot of fun because you get to watch singers in person.
Nathan, have you been to a lot of concerts?
No, I haven't been to a lot of concerts.
But not long ago, I got to see my favorite singer in concert, and it was a lot
of fun.
Now a lot of people go to concerts.
And before you can go to a concert, you have to buy a ticket.
A ticket lets you into the concert.
Megan has a ticket to Zoe's concert.
And then we also find out that Ken has a ticket to a concert on Sunday.
He is going to a rock concert.
That's right.
A rock concert means he will go listen to rock music.
Like Katie said earlier, rock music is loud.
He will listen to the band called Tune.
Now we have another key word to talk about.
You're right, Nathan.
Friends, let's take a look.
band.
band.
A band is a group of people who play music together.
There are many different kinds of bands.
That's right.
You can play in a rock band or a country band.
They are very different.
You can ask a friend, "What is your favorite band?" Katie, what is your favorite
band?
Well, Nathan, I think you know this.
My favorite band is a group called Mumford & Sons.
They are a great band, and I would love, love to go to one of their concerts.
But rock concerts are not my favorite.
Like Megan says, rock bands are loud.
But Ken says they sound great live.
Now when we go to a concert, we say that we are listening to live music.
The music is live because we sit there and listen to the musician play right in
front of us.
That's right.
I love listening to live music.
A live concert is more fun than listening to the radio.
It's fun to listen to bands play at concerts.
People really enjoy it.
And Mark ends the conversation by saying he likes classical music concerts.
Let's find out more about this in Conversation C.
(Music).
Do you play classical music?
Yes. I played in an orchestra in Texas.
What instrument do you play?
I play the violin.
Can you join an orchestra here?
Yes. There is a city orchestra.
I can play the violin for them!
That's great!
When is their next concert?
It's in December.
You can all come!
(Music).
We find out that Mark played in an orchestra in Texas.
An orchestra is a big band where many different people play music together.
They all play different instruments, but the music is wonderful.
And then we find out that Mark played the violin in his orchestra.
And I think we should learn about that key word, Nathan.
Yes, Katie, you are right.
This key word is...
violin.
violin.
A violin is a kind of instrument.
It has two parts - the body and the bow.
The body of a violin has a long handle, and you pull the bow over the strings to
make music.
Violins make beautiful music.
Violins are in orchestras usually.
But you can play the violin in many different kinds of bands.
That's right.
My mom plays the violin in a country band.
You can use it in that kind of music, too.
And we find out that Mark wants to join the city orchestra.
He says he can play the violin for them.
That would be fun for Mark.
He can play in the concert in December.
That's true.
I'm sure that that would be fun for Mark.
Friends, have you ever played in a concert or been to a concert?
That's a good question to think about.
But I think now it's time to practice our key words for the day.
Please say them with us.
Let's get started.
town.
town.
Bethpage is a town in New York.
concert.
concert.
S.H.E.'s concert is tomorrow night.
band.
band.
I play guitar in the band.
music.
music.
Joanna listens to music on the radio.
violin.
violin.
I played the violin in the concert.
OK, friends, those are our key words for today.
I hope that practice will help you be able to use them.
Right now let's take a short break.
Please come back and join us for the rest of theshow.
