Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
On this show, we want to teach you English, but we want you to have some fun,
too.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here.
And today we have a new topic: TRAVEL.
And we also have a new lesson called A Business Trip.
A Business Trip.
Katie, do you take business trips often?
Well, no, I don't take them often, but I have been on a few business trips.
They are very busy, but they're always a lot of fun.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie, and I am your other teacher here at Let's Talk in English.
I hope you're ready for today's lesson.
So you need to take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read it with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Can Rob take a quick trip?
Yes. He likes to travel.
Rob can go to a TV seminar in Atlanta.
It is at the Omni Hotel.
That hotel is near CNN's offices.
He can fly to Atlanta next Wednesday.
He can come back on Friday morning.
He has a TV program on Friday afternoon.
A travel agent can get a ticket for him.
OK, friends, let's go to Conversation A and learn some more about Rob's Business
Trip.
(Music).
Hi, Carol.
You called me.
What do you need?
Come in, Rob.
Please sit down.
Can you take a quick trip next week?
Maybe.
Where?
Can you go to Atlanta?
Atlanta!
Why?
There is a good TV seminar in Atlanta.
You can go.
You can learn something.
OK! I like to travel.
In today's lesson, someone is talking about going on a business trip.
Who is going, Katie?
Well, Rob is going on a business trip.
Carol wants him to go.
He can take a quick trip to Atlanta.
Yes, he can.
But it has to be quick.
Let's look at that key word.
quick.
quick.
If something is quick, it does not take much time.
I know another word that is like quick - fast.
They mean the same thing.
So a quick trip will not be a long trip.
It will be fast.
What else can be quick, Nathan?
Well, lots of things can be quick.
A meeting can be quick.
It only takes a few minutes.
Or a person can be quick.
That means they move quickly or they think quickly.
So Rob is going to take a quick trip to Atlanta.
Now you can say "go on a trip" or "take a trip." And Atlanta is a big city in
the United States.
Have you ever been there, Nathan?
Yes. I actually went there for seminars, too.
A seminar is like a class that you go to only once.
Rob is going to Atlanta for seminars, too.
He can learn about TV for his job.
That sounds like a great business trip.
And he gets to travel.
That's today's topic.
But it's also a key word.
travel.
travel.
If you travel, you go to a different place.
You often have to go a little far when you travel.
When you travel, you may drive a car, you may take a train, or you may even ride
in an airplane.
If you're just walking somewhere, that's not really traveling.
Now Rob likes to travel.
Nathan, do you like to travel?
Yes, I like to travel a lot.
I like to see new places and visit old friends.
There are so many fun things to do when you travel.
But traveling can make you tired.
When I go to the United States, it takes a long time to get there.
You have to ride the plane for a long time - usually close to 24 hours.
That's a whole day.
It is not quick.
No, that is not quick at all.
But I think Rob's trip will not take so long.
He is going to somewhere else in the same country, in the United States.
So it will not be a long trip.
It will be a quick trip.
Well, we have much more to learn left today.
So I think that now we should go to Conversation B and learn some more key words
and phrases.
(Music).
The seminar is next Thursday.
You can fly down next Wednesday.
When do I come back?
You can come back on Friday morning.
You must make a TV program on Friday afternoon.
I know.
Did you buy a plane ticket for me?
Not yet.
Our travel agent can get one for you.
How do you plan for a business trip?
Your company will plan it for you.
They will tell you how to get there.
And they will tell you when you need to leave.
You might need to fly for your business trip, too.
That's right.
And that's a key word for today, so let's take a look.
fly.
fly.
Flying is moving through the air.
Birds can fly.
But how can people fly, Nathan?
Well... people can fly in airplanes, so.
Of course it doesn't mean that I can just start flying now.
We can't fly like birds, but we can fly if we ride an airplane.
Where did you go the last time that you flew, Katie?
Well, the last time that I flew, I went to America to visit my family.
And I'm glad that you asked that question, Nathan, because you used the word
"flew," F-L-E-W.
That is the past tense of fly.
Fly and flew.
That's right.
I will fly to the U.S. tomorrow.
And I flew to Japan yesterday.
Now Rob must fly back to make a TV program at LTE TV.
What... what is that, Katie?
Well, it's a key word that we need to talk about.
program.
program.
A TV program is a show that you watch on TV.
Let's Talk in English is a TV program.
And there is another show that you can watch - another TV program called Studio
Classroom - that will help you with English.
Now Rob also has a program called Let's Talk.
It's a talk show.
That's one kind of TV program.
But I like to watch programs with exciting stories.
Those are called dramas.
Yes. Dramas are fun to watch.
And there are many other kinds of programs.
There are funny programs, travel programs, and news programs.
Hey, Katie, you can also watch TV programs when you fly on an airplane.
Actually, there are a lot of TV programs to choose from.
But you can only watch programs if you are flying for a long time.
If it's a quick trip, there may not be any programs to watch.
That's right.
Rob is going on a quick business trip.
And a travel agent will get his ticket.
But what is a travel agent, Katie?
A travel agent is someone who helps you get ready to travel.
They can find you the ticket that you need and they'll help you find a good
price.
Well, someone helps me buy tickets for business trips.
Maybe I can call them a travel agent.
And travel agents can help you with other things, too.
I think we'll find out what else they do in Conversation C.
So let's go there now.
(Music).
Where in Atlanta is the seminar?
Is it near the airport?
No. It's at the Omni Hotel.
That's near CNN's offices.
Great!
Can I stay at the Omni?
Yes. The travel agent can get a room for you.
Do I need a car?
No. You can take the train.
It stops near the hotel.
How convenient!
Rob will fly to Atlanta.
But where can he stay in Atlanta?
The travel agent can help him with that, too.
Yes, a travel agent can also get you a hotel room.
And Rob can stay near the seminar.
OK. Now let's look at one more key word today.
near.
near.
If you are near something, you are very close to it.
The seminar will be near Rob's hotel room because they are in the same hotel.
And I can say that I live near the subway.
I don't have to walk very far to get there.
And near my apartment are many restaurants.
I only have to walk a few minutes to get to them.
And I live near my office.
I can walk to my office in about five minutes.
And you know, I could also say the 7-Eleven is near the store.
They are two things that are near each other.
Now what is near where you live, friends?
Try to answer that question.
But before we practice today's key words, let's look at our "Use It!" sentence.
Do I need a car?
Do I need something?
Like, do I need money?
Or, do I need my book?
There are many ways to use this sentence.
And I'm sure you can make your own "Use It!" sentence.
So try it today.
But now it is time to look at all of our key words.
So let's get started.
Here's the first one.
quick.
quick.
Can we eat a quick lunch in 15 minutes?
travel.
travel.
Tim often travels to China.
near.
near.
My house is near the high school.
fly.
fly.
Ben's plane flies to New York.
program.
program.
What programs do you watch on TV?
Good job, friends.
I'm sure that you can use all of your key words.
Now, right now this TV program needs to take a little break.
But please come back and join us for the rest of the show.
