You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're very glad that you joined us today.
Our topic is SCHOOL.
And the title of today's lesson is Rob's High School Reunion.
Rob's High School Reunion.
What can you do at a high school reunion, Nathan?
You can see a lot of old friends from your high school class at a high school
reunion.
Sounds like fun.
Hello, my name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here, too.
Now, right now we want to look at our Let's Begin reading.
You can find it in your Let's Talk magazine, and Katie will read it with you
right now.
Let's begin!
Rob's high school reunion is next month!
So Rob is looking at his old yearbook.
He looks so handsome in the pictures!
He remembers his friends in the photos.
They were in science class together.
He can see them at the reunion.
Maybe he can meet his old girlfriend, too.
Don't be shy, Rob!
Well, this sounds like a very interesting lesson today.
Let's look at Conversation A.
Hi, Rob.
What are you looking at?
I'm looking at my old high school yearbook.
Look at this picture of me.
Wow, you were so handsome then!
Hey! I'm still handsome now!
I'm just kidding!
Why are you looking at your yearbook?
My high school reunion is next month.
I'm going!
Our friends Rob and Ken are looking at Rob's high school yearbook today.
Looking at an old yearbook can be fun.
Have you ever done that, Nathan?
Oh, sure. I've looked at an old yearbook.
And that's a book that your school makes every year.
It has pictures of all of the students that were at the school.
And Rob shows Ken his picture in the yearbook.
Ken says, "You were so handsome then!" And that's today's first key word.
handsome.
handsome.
If someone is handsome, they look good.
So if a boy or a man is good-looking, you can use the word: handsome.
We don't use this word to talk about girls or women, right, Katie?
That's right.
A woman would probably feel weird if someone called her handsome.
Just like men would feel strange if someone called them pretty.
That's true.
Now Rob doesn't want to show how handsome he was or how handsome he is.
But he is looking at the yearbook for another reason.
He says: My high school reunion is next month.
And that's today's "Use It!" sentence.
(Blank) is/are next month.
Our tests are next week.
Tim's big trip is next year.
Or, that concert is next month.
OK, friends, there is more to learn now in Conversation B.
(Music).
Are you in this photo?
Yes!
It's a photo of me and my friends.
We were in science class together!
Will they come to the reunion?
Yes. We all live in different cities now.
And you have different lives now.
Yes. But we all have good jobs and families.
Class reunions are great!
You can meet old friends!
I love meeting old friends.
It is a lot of fun.
And Rob and Ken are also looking at a photo of Rob and his friends in the
yearbook.
Yearbooks not only have pictures of every student, they also have lots of fun
pictures of students doing things together.
Rob is with his friends in science class.
That's right.
And that's a key word that you need to know.
science.
science.
Science is something you learn about in school.
In science, you learn how a lot of things work.
That's right.
Science teachers teach you how machines work, how the world works, and even how
your body works.
There are many kinds of science.
Yes. I remember learning about life science that talked about animals, plants
and us.
I also remember Earth science that talked about the world, like rock, air and
water.
I remember those, too, Nathan.
Friends, what kind of science did you like to study the most?
And I noticed that Rob used a phrase two times:
We all do something.
That's right.
He says, "We all live in different cities," and "We all have good jobs and
families." Can you use that sentence, Katie?
Of course.
We all want to learn some more.
So let's go to Conversation C right now.
(Music).
My old girlfriend will come, too.
Really?
Is she single?
Yes, she is.
You're single, too.
Yes, I am.
Talk to her at the reunion.
Maybe...
Don't be shy!
You're a handsome TV show host now!
OK, OK! I can talk to her!
Will she remember me?
Of course!
Well, that was a very interesting conversation.
I wonder what Rob will do at the reunion.
He said his old girlfriend will come.
Now let's take a look at that key word.
girlfriend.
girlfriend.
A girlfriend is a girl who is a friend, but she's more than that, too.
Yes. A boy will spend more time with his girlfriend than with other friends.
We say that they are dating each other.
So he also knows her better than most other friends.
So Nathan could have a girlfriend.
And Katie could be someone's girlfriend.
But we're talking about Rob's old girlfriend.
Now when Rob says "old," he does not mean that she has lived a long time.
No. He means that she was his girlfriend before, but she is not anymore.
You can use "old" in this way for many people.
Old teachers, old friends, or old classmates.
And you can use it for things, too.
You might pass your old house sometimes.
Or you might think about how your new phone is different from your old phone.
And Rob and his old girlfriend are both still single.
They're not dating anyone.
Ken tells him to talk to her, but Rob just says, "Maybe..." Rob doesn't know if
it's a good idea.
But Ken thinks it is.
"Don't be shy!" he says.
And that's another key word we need to learn about.
shy.
shy.
If you are shy, you're not always comfortable around people you do not know.
You don't make friends quickly.
And that is what the word means.
But some people are just shy about some things.
Rob talks to people easily.
He has a talk show.
But he's shy about his old girlfriend.
Some people are shy about talking in front of people when they need to.
They feel nervous and they probably speak quietly.
Rob is shy about his old girlfriend.
But Ken says he's handsome and on TV.
He shouldn't be shy.
Rob really wonders if his old girlfriend will remember him, though.
And we see another key word here, so let's take a look.
remember.
remember.
If you remember something, you know it from before.
You don't forget about it.
So, will Rob's old girlfriend still know him?
Or did she forget about him?
Well, I agree with Ken.
Of course she will remember him.
She can see him on TV.
He's famous.
She will remember Rob.
And there are lots of things that you should remember.
You should remember what you learn in school.
Remember what your teachers tell me so that you do well when you study.
And you should remember the names of your classmates.
Nathan, do you remember your classmates from fifth grade?
Oh, fifth grade was a long time ago, but I think I remember a lot of them.
I still know some of their names.
Katie, do you remember your first grade teacher?
Oh, actually I do remember my first grade teacher because she is one of my
mother's good friends.
So I always remember her.
Well, friends, we also hope that you will remember your key words.
So we should take some time to practice them now.
Here is the first key word.
handsome.
handsome.
Jordan looks so handsome in that shirt.
remember.
remember.
Do you remember your 1st grade teacher?
science.
science.
Anne learns about bugs in science class.
girlfriend.
girlfriend.
Jen is Chad's girlfriend.
He loves her.
shy.
shy.
Talk to the new girl.
Don't be shy!
All right, friends.
Those were all of today's key words.
So practice them at home.
We'll take a short break now.
But we'll be rightback.
