Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
We have a new month of lessons for you here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we're excited to teach you today.
Our new topic is NATURE.
And the title of today's lesson is MacDonald's Farm.
MacDonald's Farm.
Have you been to a farm before, Nathan?
I have been to many farms before.
When I was very little, I lived in Illinois.
That is a state in the United States with a lot of farms.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Nathan, and I'm very glad to be here with you today.
Right now I want you to get your Let's Talk in English magazine and open it up
to today's Let's Begin reading.
We're going to use it for practice.
And Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Susie and Ken will go to MacDonald's farm.
People can pick their own fruits and vegetables there.
The farmer has some mini cows.
They only weigh around 250 pounds.
But they still give milk.
Susie is doing a story on them.
Mark has a question about them.
I hope you're excited to learn about farms.
Let's start with Conversation A.
(Music).
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
Susie, why are you singing that?
Because Ken and I will visit MacDonald's Farm today.
Are you serious?
Is there really a MacDonald's Farm?
Yes. MacDonald's Farm has fruits and vegetables.
They also have some new cows.
So? Are they special?
They sure are. They are mini cows.
I'm reporting on them.
What a fun song Susie sang in Conversation A!
Nathan, do you know the song?
Oh, of course.
Old MacDonald is a fun song to sing.
But I didn't know that MacDonald really had a farm.
Well, he does.
And Susie and Ken are going to visit it today.
That's right.
Susie says the farm has fruits and vegetables.
Those are two key words.
Well, let's take a look.
The first key word is...
fruit.
fruit.
A fruit is something that you eat.
Fruit is healthy for you, and we should eat fruit every day.
Nathan, what are some fruits?
Oh, uh, well, uh, there are lots of fruits here.
Um, banana is a fruit, and strawberries are fruits, and guava is a fruit, too.
That's right.
And there's also pineapple and apple and oranges.
There are so many fruits to eat, especially here in Asia.
But Susie says the farm also has vegetables.
Well, let's learn about that key word now.
vegetable.
vegetable.
A vegetable is something else you eat.
Vegetables are also very healthy for you, and you should also try to eat some
vegetables every day as well.
So let's take a look at some vegetables.
Broccoli is a veggie.
Carrots are veggies.
Celery is...
Wait, Nathan, wait.
You keep using the word "veggie." What does that mean?
Oh, um, sorry, Katie.
Let me explain.
Veggie is a short word for vegetable.
You can say vegetable or veggie.
Both are OK.
Oh, thanks, Nathan.
OK, friends, Nathan and I had some fruits and vegetables with us.
Let's see if you know if it's a fruit or if it's a vegetable.
Nathan, fruit or vegetable?
That's an apple.
It is a fruit.
Now try this one, Katie.
Fruit or vegetable?
Well, that is corn, so it's a vegetable.
OK, last one.
Fruit or vegetable?
That's a carrot.
That's also a vegetable.
Well, friends, we also know Susie and Ken will see mini cows at the farm.
If something is mini, it is very, very small.
So they will see a very small cow.
And we'll find out more about that in Conversation B.
So let's go there now.
(Music).
How small are they?
They weigh around 250 pounds.
Regular cows weigh at least 600 pounds.
Why does the farmer want small cows?
People visit his farm.
They can enjoy the cows.
What kind of a farm is MacDonald's Farm?
It's a "pick-your-own" farm.
People can pick their own fruits and vegetables there.
What a fun place!
Susie and Ken will see many cows at old MacDonald's farm.
But Mark asks a question:
How small are they?
And that's our "Use It!" sentence.
So let's try to use it!
How happy are those people?
How tired are the doctors?
How busy are the students?
How tired is the mother?
OK, friends, say your own sentence at home.
Let's learn more about mini cows.
Like we said earlier, if something is mini, it is very small.
And Susie says a mini cow weighs around 250 pounds.
For a cow, that's not very much.
But before we learn more about cows, we need to find out about this key word:
pound.
pound.
A pound is how much something weighs.
Many people weigh about 120 to 140 pounds.
You may buy a pound or two pounds of meat at the market, too.
An animal like a small dog may just weigh 10 pounds.
But a big animal like a cow could weigh a lot.
Like our conversation says, a regular cow weighs at least 600 pounds.
That's way more than any person.
A mini cow only weighs 250 pounds.
That sounds kind of cute.
That's why people like to visit MacDonald's Farm.
And we learn this farm is a special farm.
What kind of farm is it, Katie?
Well, it's a "pick-your-own" farm.
Now what does this mean, Nathan?
Well, first we need to learn about another key word.
pick.
pick.
We usually pick fruits or vegetables at a farm.
If you pick something, you take it away from where it grows and you take it home
with you.
That's right.
When I go to a farm, I like to pick strawberries.
I can take a lot of strawberries home with me if I pick them myself.
So at MacDonald's Farm, people can visit the farm and pick their own fruits and
vegetables.
They can take what they want from the farm.
Well, that sounds like a fun farm to visit.
And we'll find out more about it in Conversation C.
So let's go there now.
(Music).
Not many farms have mini cows.
So people come and see them.
Do these mini cows give milk?
Of course!
What color are they?
They are brown. Why?
Can you ask the farmer a question?
Sure. What?
Do brown cows give chocolate milk?
Mark! Are you serious?
No! Have fun at the farm!
Well, mini cows are special animals.
There are not very many of them.
That's why a lot of people like to go to the farm and see mini cows at
MacDonald's Farm.
I wonder if mini cows are different from regular cows.
Katie, did we talk about this?
A little bit.
But I know that mini cows are much friendlier than regular cows.
You can walk up to one and pat it.
I think they are much cuter than big cows.
And Mark asks if mini cows give milk.
I think that's today's last key word.
Thanks, Nathan.
Friends, let's take a look.
milk.
milk.
Milk is something that you drink.
And friends, like we learn today, milk comes from cows.
That's right.
We usually drink milk with breakfast.
You can also put milk on your cereal.
Or when I have coffee, I always put a little milk in my coffee.
That's right.
And you can also put milk in with tea.
Now milk is a very healthy drink.
It keeps your bones and your body strong.
So it's important to drink milk.
Well, friends, we've learned a lot today so far.
But we need to keep going.
It's time to review our key words.
Please say them with us now.
Here is the first key word.
pick.
pick.
Lynn and Tom are picking peaches.
fruit.
fruit.
Apples are my favorite fruit.
vegetable.
vegetable.
Many vegetables are green.
pound.
pound.
My dog weighs 60 pounds.
milk.
milk.
She wants milk, not water.
OK, friends, I hope that that key word practice was helpful for you.
And I hope that you use these words a lot.
They can help you if you go to the farm, but also if you just go to the
supermarket.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
So don't goaway.
