Hello, friends.
Welcome to the LTE TV studio.
We're glad that you're watching Let's Talk in English.
Let's have some fun today.
My name is Nathan, and I'm one of your teachers here.
Our topic today is TRAVEL.
And the title of our lesson is Couchsurfing.
Couchsurfing.
Uh, Katie, have you ever been couchsurfing before?
Well, that is a great question, Nathan, one that I am excited to answer.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie, and I actually have never been couchsurfing.
But many of my friends have.
It's a great way to travel if you don't want to stay in a hotel or a hostel.
It can help you save money.
Well, I think today's lesson should be very different.
So let's get started with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk.
Do you like to travel?
But maybe you don't have a lot of money.
Well, one way that you can save money when you travel is to couchsurf.
And here to tell us all about couchsurfing is Ms. Christy Couchsurfer.
Welcome, Christy!
Tell us, what is couchsurfing?
You can couchsurf when you travel.
You stay in someone's home for free!
Do you sleep on their couch?
Sometimes!
Or you might sleep in a bed.
Is it safe to stay with a stranger?
Usually.
It's best to choose a host who has a lot of good reviews.
And you find these reviews online?
Yes, they're on the couchsurfing website.
Katie and I have something special on set today.
It's a sofa.
But did you know that sofas are also called something else?
We'll get to that word later.
Right now we need to talk about couchsurfing.
Rob's guest Christy says that it is something you do when you travel.
You stay in someone's home for free.
It's an interesting idea, and we have an interesting key word phrase to teach
you, too.
for free.
for free.
We often say that you can do something or get something for free.
You don't have to do anything or pay anything for it.
Christy could just say, "You stay in someone's home free." But many people say
"for free" even though you don't need to.
That's right.
Now, when you watch TV, you might hear people say this on a commercial:
If you buy one shirt, you can get another for free.
All right, back to couchsurfing.
When you couchsurf, Rob wants to know if you really sleep on a stranger's couch.
Couch!
That's the big key word for today, Katie.
couch.
couch.
Couch is the other word for sofa.
This is a couch.
A couch is a long seat that a few people can sit on together.
You probably have one in your house.
So when you couchsurf, you may sleep on your host's coach, or you may sleep in a
bed.
But I said another key word that we should probably talk about.
host.
host.
A host is someone that takes care of you.
If you stay at someone's house, they are your host.
They take care of you while you are there.
But if someone comes to visit you and they stay at your house, you are their
host.
And we have other kinds of hosts, too.
Yes.
There is another kind of host that I think about.
It is a host on TV.
They talk to the people that watch their show and they show those people new
things.
It's like they're taking care of someone that is watching their show.
OK. Now let's go back to our host Rob on his show in Conversation B.
(Music).
So if I want to couchsurf, where do I start?
First, go to the website.
Search for hosts in the places you're traveling.
OK. Then what?
You'll see a list of hosts.
Look through their profiles.
How do I contact a host?
Message them. Tell them a little about yourself, your trip and when you want to
stay.
It sounds interesting.
But I think I'd rather stay at a hotel!
So are you interested in couchsurfing?
If you want to try it, you should go to the website.
It tells you where you can stay in different parts of the world.
And you can search for hosts on the website by looking at their reviews.
And you just used one of our other key words, Nathan.
Let's talk about it.
search.
search.
If you are searching for something, you are looking for it.
Sometimes I have to search for things in my house.
If I don't use something often, I don't always remember where it is.
Or you might search for a place in a new city if you don't know the area well.
Now on the website, as you search for hosts, you can look through their
profiles, too.
"Look through" just means "look at a lot of things," not just one or two things.
If you like a host, you can message them.
Now we learn this word as a noun last week.
But this is a verb.
Well, let's take a look at that key word.
message.
message.
If you message someone, you send them some information.
But messaging also uses technology.
Emails, online chat and texts are always to message people.
It's very convenient to be able to message people.
And you know what?
I have couchsurfed with friends before.
But uh, if I was alone, I might rather stay in a hotel, like Rob.
Well, Nathan, you just used our last key word.
So friends, let's learn about it.
rather.
rather.
When you have a choice, you can use the word "rather" to say which one you would
like to choose.
So if Rob was choosing between couchsurfing and staying at a hotel, he would
like to stay in a hotel.
He would rather stay in a hotel.
How about this, Nathan?
Would you rather go on a trip with friends or alone?
Well, if I'm traveling, I don't mind to be alone.
But if I'm going someplace new to enjoy it, I think I would rather be with
friends.
Well, we've looked at all our key words now.
But I think it's time for us to have some fun today with Read It!
(Music).
Couchsurfing is a good way to save money when you travel!
Hosts offer a couch or bed to someone - for free!
If you want to couchsurf, go to www.couchsurfing.org.
Search for a host in the place where you want to travel.
Check out their profiles.
When you find a good host, message them.
But be careful - couchsurfing means staying in a stranger's home.
A hotel is sometimes easier and safer.
So which would you rather do?
Think about it!
Now you know the website for couchsurfing.
You can start planning your next trip.
But now we can talk about this strange word a little more.
It is kind of strange.
The word is made of two parts.
The first is "couch," which we already learned about today.
And the second part is "surf," like surfing on the ocean?
Uh, no, no, I don't think so, Katie.
Uh, surf can also mean to move from one thing to another.
If you are traveling, you move from one place to another.
I see. OK.
So Read It also says that you should check out hosts' profiles.
If you check something out, you look at it or you learn about it.
Now be careful checking out your hosts.
I sometimes tell people that they should check something out because I think
they will like it, too, like a movie or some music.
And I think you should check out today's key words.
Let's practice them now.
Here is the first key word.
host.
host.
Your host will offer you a clean towel.
couch.
couch.
Katie bought a new couch!
for free.
for free.
Kids eat for free at this restaurant.
search.
search.
I'm searching for my friend on Facebook.
message.
message.
I messaged my friend from high school.
rather.
rather.
Would you rather go out or stay home?
Very good job, friends.
Now it's time to take a break.
(Music).
