Hello, friends.
Thank you for joining us here on Let's Talk in English.
We're all very happy that you came to learn some English with us.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here in the LTE TV studio.
Now, today we have a new topic:
TRAVEL.
And the title of our lesson is Megan's Trip to France.
Megan's Trip to France.
Um, Katie, haven't we had a lot of lessons about Megan's trip to France?
Yes, Nathan, we have.
But today's lesson is not about Megan getting ready for the trip.
I think that we'll find out how her trip to France was.
Oh.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie and I'm excited to learn with you today.
So let's get started.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
Nathan will read with you right now.
Let's begin!
Megan is back!
She had a fun trip to France!
But now she has jet lag.
Her body is confused about the time.
Megan visited Paris and Nice.
Nice is in the south of France.
Megan traveled alone, but she wasn't lonely!
There were a lot of other tourists there.
She had a great vacation!
Well, let's find out about Megan's vacation in Conversation A.
(Music).
Megan! You're back!
How was your trip?
It was so much fun!
But I have jet lag today.
Oh, no!
What's the time in France now?
It's 5 in the evening.
France is six hours ahead of us.
I see.
Your body wants dinner!
And soon, my body will want sleep.
My body is confused!
It sure is!
So Megan was finally able to go to France.
Good for her!
I'm sure she had a great time.
Now friends, when you see your friend after they have seen or done something
special, you can ask them: How was your (blank)?
Yeah.
So if they went to see a new movie, you can say: How was the movie?
Or if they went to the zoo, you can ask: How was the zoo?
And Susie asks Megan: How was your trip?
But she could also say: How was France?
But if she said that, we wouldn't be able to learn this key word.
trip.
trip.
When you take a trip, you visit a place.
You can take a trip to another country like Megan.
But you can also take much shorter trips.
Sometimes we might say that we need to take a trip to the store.
Or you might need to take a trip to the doctor.
Yes. We often go on short trips.
But we don't take big trips for fun very much.
I love trips to new places.
But sometimes you get jet lag like Megan, too.
Yes. It's happened to me before, too.
Jet lag makes you very tired, so after you take a trip, you may need to sleep a
lot.
Well, friends, I think it's time for us to take a trip now - a trip to
Conversation B.
(Music).
So what did you think of France?
France is such a beautiful country! But it's very crowded this time of year.
Summer is tourist season!
You're right.
Where did you go?
I went to Paris for two days and Nice for seven days.
Nice?
Where is that?
It's in the south of France.
In Conversation A, we learned the bad part of Megan's trip.
She has jet lag.
But I think she had a good time in France, anyway.
I'm sure she did.
Susie asks, "What did you think of France?" And Megan says that France is a
beautiful country!
But it's also very crowded this time of year.
When Megan says this time of year, she is talking about the season, or a smaller
part of the year.
In winter, I could say that people don't go out much this time of year.
But in summer, you can say that people like to take trips this time of year.
Just look at what Susie says:
Summer is tourist season!
And there's a key word.
Friends, let's take a look.
tourist.
tourist.
A tourist is a person who is in a new place for fun.
And Nathan, what do you see inside the word "tourist"?
Ah, well, uh, there's a few different words: to, T-O; is, I-S...
Uh, oh, but there's another important one:
tour.
Now tourists are people that are going on tours.
This doesn't mean that all tourists are in a group following a leader but a
tourist can plan their own trip, too.
And Megan was a tourist, but she was not on a tour.
She went to Paris and Nice by herself.
Do tourists come to your city or town?
You can probably tell if someone is a tourist just by looking at them.
They look different than the people that live in that place.
Now I'm sure you've heard of Paris.
But have you heard of Nice?
Maybe not.
It's a city that is in the south of France.
And let's look at that key word.
south.
south.
South means the bottom of an area, like in a country or a city.
So the south of France is the bottom part of France if you look at a map.
In the United States, we call the bottom half of the country the South.
I went to college in the South.
And I lived in the South.
Texas is in the south of the United States.
But friends, you should also know that south is also used as an adjective.
In the names South America or South Africa, it is used as an adjective.
You can use it both ways, too - as a noun or as an adjective.
Well, I'm sure that Megan has more to tell us about her trip to France in
Conversation C.
(Music).
Is France very expensive?
Yes, it is.
Everything there costs a lot of money.
Did you travel alone?
Yes. It was fun!
Were you lonely or bored?
No! I read a lot.
I finished five books during my trip!
You had a great vacation! Maybe I can plan a trip soon!
If you want to go to France, I guess you should save some money first.
Megan says that everything there costs a lot of money.
Yes. But you always have to spend some money when you go on a big trip.
I think France would be worth it.
And Megan still had a fun time.
She wasn't lonely or bored.
You're right, Katie.
And you said a key word from the conversation.
lonely.
lonely.
If you are lonely, you feel like you have no friends to be with or to talk to.
It's not a happy feeling.
And Susie asked Megan if she traveled alone.
Megan was alone, but she wasn't lonely.
Hey, you know, this makes me think of a popular song.
That song called Stronger.
I think the song says, "Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone." Megan could
sing that, too.
Yeah, Megan could sing that song.
And Nathan, you did great singing it.
Now I know that I sometimes like to rest or have some quiet.
But I'm not lonely at those times.
But I'm sure most of us have felt lonely at some time, too.
Yes. You might feel lonely when you move to a new place and don't know many
people there.
But Megan wasn't in France for very long.
And she did a lot of reading there, so she didn't have a lonely vacation.
That wouldn't be fun at all.
No, it wouldn't.
But you just said another great key word.
vacation.
vacation.
A vacation is a time that you have off from school or work.
When you take a vacation, you don't have to go somewhere special.
You can spend your vacation at home if you want.
But many people think of taking a trip when they hear the word vacation.
You can also say that you are on vacation from work or school, too.
And it sounds like Susie will take a vacation from work soon, too.
She says: Maybe I can plan a trip soon.
And that's today's "Use It!" sentence.
Maybe I can do something soon.
When you use this sentence, it just means that you are thinking about doing
something, not that you actually will.
So let's try to use it.
Maybe I can visit you soon.
Or maybe I can start my new project soon.
Oh, I think I have another "Use It!" sentence to use.
Maybe I can practice some key words soon, or even right now.
Well, friends, please say your key words with us.
trip, trip.
How was your trip to China?
south.
south.
My grandmother lives in the south.
lonely.
lonely.
I don't have many friends. I'm lonely.
tourist.
tourist.
A lot of tourists visit New York City.
vacation.
vacation.
Summer vacation was too short!
OK, friends, I hope that you enjoyed our key word practice.
Try to say them at home because they are very helpful words.
Right now we're going to take a short break.
So don't go away.
(Music).
