You're watching Let's Talk in English.
This is the show where we have fun learning English together.
My name is Katie, one of your LTE teachers.
And we hope that you're ready to learn with us today.
Our topic is still AROUND TOWN.
And we have part 2 of our lesson: Susie's New Style.
Susie's New Style.
Nathan, have you gotten a new style before?
Uh, well, I've had a very different style before.
Before I came to work here, my hair was actually very long.
Hi, everyone.
I am your teacher, Nathan.
I think that we're going to have a great time today.
Right now I want you to find your LTE magazine and look inside.
You should see a Let's Begin reading for today's lesson.
And right now, Katie will read it with you.
Let's begin!
Susie is looking through a style magazine for haircut ideas.
She wants something simple but stylish.
There are other beauty tips in the magazine, too.
What about a manicure?
Nice nails are important!
How about a foot spa?
That treatment won't change Susie's style.
But it will feel good!
OK, friends, let's start learning with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Rob.
I need some advice.
Hey, Susie.
Advice about what?
I need hair advice.
I'm getting a haircut soon.
Oh, nice!
Get a haircut like mine!
No, no, not that short.
I just want something simple.
You want something simple but stylish.
Right!
This is a magazine about hair.
I like that haircut.
That style will look good on you.
Well, Susie is still looking for advice about her new style.
If you want advice from someone, you ask someone for his or her opinion about
something.
Right.
I might be thinking about buying some new clothes.
I can ask friends for advice on what kind of clothes I should buy or where I
should buy clothes.
I need clothes advice.
But Susie wants advice about her hair.
She needs hair advice.
And Rob suggests that she cut her hair to look like his.
What?
That would look terrible!
No, Susie should not do that.
Oh, Nathan, don't worry.
He was joking.
And Susie doesn't want her hair to be that short.
Yeah, that's right.
She says she wants something simple.
And that is our first key word for today, so let's learn about it.
simple.
simple.
If something is simple like your hair or your clothes, it is plain.
That's right.
Susie wants a simple haircut.
She wants a haircut that is easy to fix every day.
Now, friends, sometimes we say that something is simple to learn.
It just means it's easy to learn.
It's not hard for you to learn about, so it's simple.
Or sometimes we think doing things is simple.
I think riding a bike is simple.
It's easy for me to ride a bike.
Or sometimes I wear simple clothes.
If my clothes are simple, I mean that they are usually just one color, like this
shirt.
Well, Rob starts to understand what Susie wants.
He says Susie wants something simple but stylish, too.
And Nathan, that is a key word.
So friends, we should learn about it.
stylish.
stylish.
If something is stylish, it looks good; a lot of people like it.
That's right.
We usually say people's clothes are stylish.
Clothes can look good.
Now in this key word, you see another word that we talked about yesterday:
style.
Sometimes we say something has a lot of style.
That means it looks unique and good.
And sometimes we may also say that a person is stylish.
He or she is always dressed well and looks nice.
They have good clothes.
So they are stylish.
But Susie wants a stylish haircut.
She wants her hair to look nice.
And I think that she has found the style she wants.
She picks out a style from the magazine.
Well, I want to know what she picked.
I guess we should go to Conversation B to find out more.
(Music).
I can't decide about the color, though.
I like my own color.
Then don't change it.
There are other ways to change your style.
Like what?
Check out these other beauty tips.
Wow!
I can get a manicure!
I didn't think about that!
My sister loves to get her nails done!
Fun!
And I do need a manicure.
Well, Susie may know the style she wants, but she has another problem.
She can't decide on the color of her hair.
That's right.
But that is a hard decision.
She does not know what color she should make her hair.
But she decides not to change it.
Rob says there are other ways to change your style.
And that is today's "Use It!" sentence.
Let's use it!
There are other ways to study for your test.
Or there are other ways to play this game.
There are other ways to fix the sink.
There are other ways to learn a lot of English.
But we are glad that you're learning with us.
We are glad that you're learning with us.
Try to say your "Use It!" sentence at home.
OK, friends.
Well, Rob gives Susie some more help.
He tells her to check out these other beauty tips.
And Katie, that is a key word that we should talk about.
beauty.
beauty.
Beauty is a nice appearance - how you look.
You can use the word "beauty" to describe people, things or places, too.
That's right.
But in our conversation, Susie wants beauty tips.
Do you know what she means here, Nathan?
Uh... not, not really, Katie.
But I... I think you probably do.
I sure do.
I love beauty tips.
Susie wants ideas on how to look nice.
And one beauty tip is getting a manicure.
A... manicure is when you paint your nails nicely.
Hmm. I've never done that before.
But I think there's another key word that we need to talk about.
nail.
nail.
Your nails are on your fingers.
You have fingernails on your fingers and toenails on your toes.
And you can paint your fingernails and toenails.
When you get your fingernails painted, this is called a manicure.
Well, those are some good ideas, Katie.
Uh, what other beauty tips might there be?
Are there good ones for your hair?
Well, sometimes you can... like we said earlier, you can get a haircut, or you
can change the color of your hair.
And you can also get a facial.
Now friends, a facial is when you put a mask on your face for some time, and
when you take it off, your skin is very soft.
That's a great beauty tip.
Some other beauty tips are maybe for your makeup so that it looks nice every
day.
These beauty tips are usually things women use so that we look beautiful every
day, maybe.
Yes. I don't think that I will be using a lot of these beauty tips, and that's
OK.
And I know that Rob and Susie have some more beauty ideas in Conversation C.
(Music).
(Background Noise).
The magazine talks about a foot spa.
Look.
What's a foot spa?
It's a special treatment for your feet.
Someone on my show talked about it once.
What a great idea!
I can try that, too.
But, Susie, a foot spa won't change your style.
No. But it will feel good!
And that's important, too!
Well, Rob is just full of ideas for Susie today.
He tells her about a foot spa.
A spa is a place people go to get healthy.
You can do a lot of things at a spa.
You can get your nails done at a spa - a manicure.
Or you can get a massage.
Or like in our conversation, you can go to a foot spa - that's where you get
special treatment for your feet.
Now let's look at the word "treatment." Treatment is something you do for
something to make it better.
If we are sick, we often get treatment for our sickness.
But at a foot spa, you can get a foot treatment.
This just makes your feet feel a lot better.
Well, Susie thinks it's a great idea.
It doesn't sound too bad to me, either.
Well, Nathan, I agree.
But we should talk about the key word that you just used.
idea.
idea.
An idea is a suggestion or a plan for something.
Susie says, "What a great idea!" She means that Rob's idea is a great thing for
her to do.
Studying really hard for an English test is a good idea.
But deciding not to study for a test would be a bad idea.
When you have a problem, you might try to think of a way to fix it.
Well, friends, I think now we should review today's key words together.
Here is your first key word.
idea.
idea.
That's a great idea! Let's go!
simple.
simple.
Bella is wearing a simple shirt.
stylish.
stylish.
You look so stylish in those shorts!
beauty.
beauty.
Can you give me some beauty tips?
nail.
nail.
Oh, no! I broke a nail!
OK, friends, that was some great key word practice.
I hope that you remembered all of them and that you found these words useful.
They are good words.
We're going to take a short break now.
But we'll be right back afterthis.
