Welcome to the LTE TV studio, friends.
You are watching Let's Talk in English.
Let's have some fun today.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here.
Today's topic is TECHNOLOGY.
And our lesson is called Computers and Wi-Fi.
Computers and Wi-Fi.
Katie, do you use Wi-Fi very often?
Well, Nathan, I use Wi-Fi every single day.
I have Wi-Fi at my apartment.
And when I'm in the city, I also use it as well.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie, and I hope that you're ready to learn a lot with us today.
But before we can get started, we need to read today's Let's Begin.
So take out your magazine and turn to today's lesson.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
The station just got Wi-Fi.
Rob is trying to log on.
But he can't because he doesn't remember the password.
More and more places in the city have Wi-Fi.
But sometimes Wi-Fi is not free.
The station's Wi-Fi signal is strong.
Rob and Susie can browse the Internet on their phones.
OK, friends, let's go to Conversation A and find out some more.
(Music).
Hi, Rob.
What are you doing?
Oh, hi, Susie.
I'm trying to log on to the station's Wi-Fi.
Isn't it great?
Many other places in the city have Wi-Fi, too!
Yes, it is.
But I have a problem.
I can't long on.
Why not?
I need a password to use it.
Do you remember the password?
I think the password is Time1234.
Wow. LTE TV is getting a lot of new things at their office.
Yesterday Ken and Susie were talking about getting new computers for work.
But they just got Wi-Fi, too.
Now that is a key word for today.
Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi is getting online without wires.
That means that you don't have to plug in to anything.
Right.
Actually, the "Wi" in Wi-Fi means wireless or without wires.
Sometimes we call Wi-Fi wireless, too.
Now Nathan, how do people get online without Wi-Fi?
Well, like Susie says, many places have Wi-Fi.
But lots of people still need to plug their computer in with wires for Ethernet.
Which one do you use most, friends?
If you get online with your phone, I'm sure that you use Wi-Fi.
Today you can get online with your phone and many different places if you live
in a city.
Katie, you just used another great key word.
city.
city.
A city is a place where there are many buildings and many people.
Cities are like towns but they are bigger.
That's right.
I am from a small city in the United States.
It is bigger than a town, but there are many cities that are bigger, too.
Nathan, did you grow up in cities or in towns?
Well, both.
When I was very little, I lived in a tiny town in the United States.
But I moved to Asia where I lived in a very big city.
So Rob and Susie work in the city.
But Rob is having problems with the new Wi-Fi.
He can't log on.
Now friends, when you use Wi-Fi, you often need a name and a password.
That's right.
And when you use them, you log on.
You can also say "log in." So what's Rob's problem, Katie?
Well, he says, "I need a password to use it." And friends, that's our "Use It!"
sentence.
I need (blank) to (blank), like, I need sleep to feel better.
Or, I need coffee to wake up.
And, I need a pen to write down a phone number.
This is a great "Use It!" sentence to know.
I use it all the time.
Now let's learn some more useful English in Conversation B.
The library has free Wi-Fi, too.
Did you know that?
It's so convenient.
I know!
You can use Wi-Fi on a computer or a cellphone to browse the Internet.
Some airlines even offer Wi-Fi on their planes!
But that's not free!
Usually you need to pay for it.
You're right.
I pay for W-Fi on planes.
But it's not too expensive!
Though many places have Wi-Fi now, you can't always use it.
Sometimes you need a password.
Or sometimes you can't use it but you need to pay for it, like on airplanes.
But at the library, Susie says it's free.
Rob says that you can use Wi-Fi there to browse the Internet.
People like places with free Wi-Fi.
Well, we should talk about that key word that you just used, Nathan.
Internet.
Internet.
The Internet is everything online.
Whenever you get online, you are on the Internet.
Or you can say that you are using the Internet when you are online.
You can use the Internet for many things.
You have to use it to check e-mail or Facebook.
I also get on the Internet to find information or to read the news.
And what else do people do on the Internet?
Well, some people play games on the Internet.
And I sometimes use the Internet to get on YouTube to watch videos or listen to
music.
Now, also, you can just browse the Internet.
Rob said that, too.
When you browse something, you are just looking around.
You can browse the Internet by looking on websites.
Or you can browse through a store if you don't really want to buy anything.
So you can also browse a store or a book.
And we hope you aren't just browsing the TV right now.
Stay with us as we learn more in Conversation C.
(Music).
All right!
I can finally log on!
Me, too.
And the signal is strong.
Yes.
I can look at pictures and watch videos.
And I can look at Facebook.
This is great!
But we shouldn't spend too much time on the Internet.
We have work to do!
You're right.
Carol won't be very happy.
But we can use the station's Wi-Fi for work, too!
It looks like the password worked.
Rob was able to log on to the Wi-Fi at work.
He is using his smartphone to get online.
And Susie is, too.
She is able to log on.
And she says that the signal is strong, too.
Well, I think there are some words to talk about in that sentence, Nathan.
Yes, there are.
And the first key word in this sentence is...
signal.
signal.
Wi-Fi signal lets your computer know that Wi-Fi is available.
You can get it to use.
Now that might be a little hard to understand.
When you use Wi-Fi, your computer has to find the Wi-Fi first.
It finds Wi-Fi through electric signals.
Cellphones also use signals to be able to call.
Now have you ever been somewhere that your cellphone didn't work?
That was because there was no signal for your phone.
And your computer and phone can even show you if you have a good signal.
If the signal is good, you will see a lot of bars or lines in the corner of the
screen.
So if it is bad, there will only be a few bars or lines.
You can also call good signal "strong signal," and that's the next key word to
talk about.
strong.
strong.
You might know this word.
But if something is strong, it has a lot of power or energy.
So if a person with strong arms is able to lift heavy things.
Or the water in the river might be strong.
It is moving very fast and can even push things that are in it.
With Wi-Fi, a machine sends a signal to computers or phones.
If the computer or phone is near the machine, it will get a strong signal that
gives you fast Internet.
And it's great to have fast Internet at work.
You can get your work done more easily.
That is very important because sometimes you might need to search for
information on the Internet.
And if you don't have a strong signal, you won't be able to find anything that
you need.
And hey, guess what, friends?
Our work is almost done, too.
But now we need to review our key words for today.
The first key word is...
Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi.
Where can I find Wi-Fi?
city.
city.
Taipei is a big city.
signal.
signal.
My cellphone signal is bad.
strong.
strong.
The Wi-Fi signal is strong.
Internet.
Internet.
I found the picture on the Internet.
OK, friends, that is all of our key words for today.
Did you remember them all?
Well, let's take a short break now.
But please come back and join us for the rest of theshow.
