You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we are going to have a lot of fun learning English today.
Today our topic is TECHNOLOGY.
And we have a new lesson for you called Computers and Wi-Fi.
Computers and Wi-Fi.
Now Nathan, do you use a desktop computer or a laptop computer?
Well, when I'm at work, I use a desktop computer.
But when I'm at home, I use a laptop computer.
Hello, friends.
My name is Nathan.
It's good to be with you today.
Now why don't you open up your LTE magazine?
Inside you can find today's Let's Begin reading.
And you can read along with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Good news!
Carol ordered new computers.
Susie's old computer was really slow.
She saved many photos and videos on it.
Ken's new computer is a laptop.
The keyboard is not very big.
But he can still type.
His laptop doesn't have a mouse.
It has a touchpad!
Susie has a new desktop computer.
She can save many things now!
Well, I think we're going to learn a lot of words about computers.
Let's get started in Conversation A.
(Music).
Ken! Did you hear the good news?
No. What news, Susie?
Carol ordered new computers for us!
Really?
That's great!
I need a new computer.
Me, too.
My computer is really, really slow.
Why is it so slow?
Because I saved all my photos and videos on it.
And you have a lot of those.
I sure do!
If I worked with Susie and Ken, I know I would be excited.
Carol bought new computers for LTE TV.
Yeah. That is great news.
It's wonderful when you get new things to use at work.
They often make your job easier.
Now Susie tells Ken this good news.
Both of them needed new computers.
Susie's computer is very slow because she saved all her photos and videos on it.
Let's look at both of those key words.
photo.
photo.
A photo is a picture that you take with a camera.
Now you can leave pictures on your camera.
But many people like to save them on their computer, like Susie.
Do you take a lot of photos, Katie?
Well, I do when I am traveling.
When I am working, I usually do not take a lot of photos because I'm at work.
Now friends, photos help you remember all the cool things you have done.
I also like to have pictures of all my friends.
Yes. It's great to have pictures, especially of friends or things that you have
done.
But what about videos?
Susie saved... saves those on her computer, too.
And that's the next key word to talk about.
video.
video.
A video is a short movie you take with a camera.
Now, many phones and cameras can take video.
But it's better to have a video camera.
Yes.
Usually your video will look much better if you use a video camera.
But if your phone is the only camera that you have, you should still take video.
I love watching my old videos.
You can take videos of parties, fun times with friends, and even songs or
stories.
Nathan's right.
It is very fun to watch your old videos.
Ken says that Susie has a lot of photos and videos.
I think that's because she tells stories on the news for her job.
They are all on video.
She meets many new people and does many cool things.
So Susie answers Ken, "I sure do!" In this sentence, "sure" is a lot like saying
"really." Now you could also say,
"I sure like this food." That means that you really like it.
Or you sure look happy.
Or, I would sure like to go to Conversation B now.
So let's do that.
(Music).
How do you like your new computer?
I love it!
It's a laptop!
Look.
Hey, that is a nice one.
It is.
But the keyboard isn't very big.
I know.
But I can still type.
That's good.
The screen is really clear, too.
Yes, it's great for work.
I can watch all my videos on it.
Later in the day, Susie comes to see Ken's new computer.
His computer is a laptop.
Now it is called a laptop because you can use it on your lap.
It's easy to carry around.
And Susie thinks that it is a good computer.
She says it is a nice one. But what does she not like about it, Nathan?
Well, she doesn't think that the keyboard is very big.
Now let's talk about that key word.
keyboard.
keyboard.
A keyboard is all the buttons that you use to work on a computer.
You can call the buttons keys.
Some keys have letters on them and others have numbers.
And there are other keys that do other things.
All computers need a keyboard whether it's a laptop or a desktop.
But I can think of something else that often has a keyboard.
Do you know what I'm thinking about, Katie?
Um, I think so, Nathan.
Many, oh, many cell phones today also have a keyboard.
But a cell phone keyboard isn't very big.
And hey, that's a lot like our "Use It!" sentence, Nathan.
It sure is.
The (blank) isn't very big, like:
The hat isn't very big, or the house isn't very big.
I know one.
The park isn't very big.
Now friends, I'm sure you can use this sentence, too.
Ken's keyboard isn't very big.
But he says he can still type.
That's good.
No, it's really good because you just used another key word.
type.
type.
When you type, you are using the buttons or keys on the keyboard.
Most of the time you type on a computer to write.
And you can also use this word for your cell phone.
You type on your cell phone when you send a text message to a friend.
I remember learning to type in school.
We would see how many words we could type in one minute.
Now, I am not that fast at typing.
But some people are very fast.
Some people can type 100 words in one minute.
Katie, are you fast at typing?
Well, actually, Nathan, I am fast at typing.
I can type very fast on a desktop computer keyboard and a laptop computer
keyboard.
But on my cell phone keyboard, I cannot type fast.
Oh, I see.
Yes, a cell phone keyboard is much smaller.
Well, friends, I think now we can learn a few more English words about computers
in Conversation C.
Let's go there now.
Where's the mouse?
I don't need one.
See?
The laptop has a touchpad!
Oh. Can you use that well?
Sure, I can.
So where is your laptop?
I don't have one.
I have a new desktop computer.
Cool!
You can save a lot on desktop computers.
Yes, I know!
But don't save everything on it.
Or it will be slow!
So we know that Ken has a laptop computer.
The keyboard isn't very big.
But the screen is clear.
But now we learn something else about the computer.
It doesn't have a mouse.
But it does have a touchpad.
That's like my laptop.
Yes, many people use touchpads.
But we need to talk about our next key word.
mouse.
mouse.
You need a mouse to use a computer.
Now friends, this word is not...
Katie! Over there!
There's a mouse!
No, Nathan, we're not talking about an animal mouse.
We are talking about a computer mouse that...
Oh, wait, is there really a mouse over there?
Yeah, there is.
Here, I'll bring it to show you.
No, no! I don't want to see it.
I don't like...
No, no, Katie, here it is!
No, take it away!
Look!
Oh... uh, wait! That's a computer mouse!
Of course! It's a computer mouse.
We're talking about computer mouses.
Well, friends, I'm sure you have used a computer mouse before.
Now, can you remember all of the computer words that we talked about?
Well, try to remember the key words at least.
Why don't we practice them now?
Here is your first key word.
photo.
photo.
Chris' photo was in the newspaper.
video.
video.
The video of the puppy was popular.
keyboard.
keyboard.
My keyboard is broken. I can't use it.
type.
type.
I am typing on my keyboard.
mouse.
mouse.
The mouse is next to the keyboard.
Friends, I hope that you're able to remember all of the words that we learn
today about computers.
They are great words to know.
We're going to take a short break right now.
But we'll be rightback.
