You're watching Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at the LTE studio.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're ready to have some fun learning
English today.
Our topic is SHOPPING.
And the title of our lesson is A New Stationery Store.
A New Stationery Store.
Now Nathan, do you buy a lot of stationery?
Not really.
I don't go to the stationery stores very often, only if I really need something
there.
I am your teacher Nathan.
It's good to be with you again here in the studio.
Well, I think that now we need to open our magazines and read Let's Begin with
Katie.
Let's begin!
Ken borrows Mark's pen.
He is writing something down.
Mark's pen is really great.
It is from the new stationery store.
The store sells nice cards.
Ken can get one for a friend.
Mark and Ken can go to the store after lunch.
Mark wants a notebook and some markers.
OK. Let's learn more about this in Conversation A.
(Music).
Ken, are you ready for lunch?
Almost, Mark.
Let me write something down.
May I borrow your pen?
Yes, of course.
Thanks.
Hey, this is a great pen!
I know.
It's new!
Where did you get it?
At the new stationery store.
Bookman's?
Yes! It's a great place!
Well, it's almost lunch time at the station.
Mark asks Ken an important question.
He says: Ken, are you ready for lunch?
And Ken says, "Almost." He is almost ready.
He just wants to write something down first.
And Nathan, you just used our first key word phrase.
write down.
write down.
If you write something down, you write it on something like a piece of paper or
in a notebook.
And we often write things down when we need to remember something.
You may write down a phone number you want to keep or something important that
your teacher says.
You should also write those things down, friends.
That's right.
I usually write down things I need to do the next day.
That's another important thing to write down.
Writing things down helps me stay organized.
Mmhm.
Now Nathan, what do you usually write down?
Well, sometimes when I need to write for work, I will write different ideas down
on a piece of paper.
I will write about this idea and that idea.
I will choose things that way.
Well, Ken needs to write something down.
He asks to borrow Mark's pen.
And then he says this is a great pen.
And we find out that it's a new pen.
Where did Mark buy the pen, Nathan?
Well, he says he bought it at the new stationery store.
And that's a key word, isn't it, Katie?
You're right.
It is a key word.
stationery.
stationery.
Stationery is anything you need for writing.
These are things like pens, papers and pencils.
Nathan, can you think of anything else?
Hmm, uh, oh, you need erasers, too.
Sometimes you write something that you don't want on the paper.
You need an eraser for that.
And you can find those things at stationery stores.
You can also buy envelopes and anything you use at an office at a stationery
store.
That's right.
You can find so many useful things at stationery stores.
I love going to those stores.
I always go there when I want to buy cards to send home to my family.
And it's a great place to find nice paper to write letters on, too.
OK, friends.
I think it's time that we take a look at Conversation B.
There's a lot more to learn there.
(Music).
Was this pen expensive?
A little.
But it works really well.
It does!
Bookman's is a big store.
What do they sell?
They sell stationery and pens.
They also sell some books and gifts.
Do they sell nice birthday cards?
Of course!
They sell all kinds of cards.
Cool.
I need a birthday card for a friend.
Ken asks another question:
Was this pen expensive?
And Mark says:
A little. But it works really well.
Now you could also say the pen writes really well instead of it works really
well.
You can say both.
That's right.
And we find out that Bookman's, the new stationery store, is a big store.
It sells many things.
What do they sell, Katie?
Well, they sell stationery and pens.
And they also sell some books and gifts.
Well, Katie, I need to buy a birthday card.
Do they sell those?
Our conversation says they do.
And I think that we just used a key word there.
Oh, you're right.
Let's learn some more about this key word.
card.
card.
A card is a piece of paper that is folded in half.
The front usually has a picture.
And on the inside, there is usually a message.
You can write something, sign your name, and then give the card to someone
special.
And friends, there are many kinds of cards.
There are birthday cards, holiday cards and thank-you cards.
Let's look at our "Use It!" sentence.
I need a birthday card for a friend.
Friends, let's use it!
I need paper for my class.
I need a new sweater for work.
I need a new book for my vacation.
And I need some new clothes for my new job.
Good job, friends.
Now let's go to Conversation C and see what else is there to learn.
(Music).
Let's go there after lunch.
OK. I can get a card.
And I can get a notebook and some markers.
Don't buy those.
Megan can give you those things for the office.
But I want them for my desk at home.
Oh, I see.
You can buy something else.
What's that?
Another pen.
Then I can have this one!
Well, it looks like Mark and Ken are going to the stationery store after lunch.
Ken wants to buy a card.
And what does Mark want to buy, Nathan?
Mark wants to buy a notebook and some markers.
And those are our two key words.
Let's take a look at the first one.
notebook.
notebook.
A notebook is a book that you write in.
It has paper in it.
That's right.
You usually use a notebook at school.
But when I was in school, I had a different notebook for every class.
You may write your notes in a notebook.
And it's important to bring your notebook to class.
That way you can write things down and remember what you need to know.
Maybe you use a notebook when you watch the show.
Mark and Ken may use a notebook at the station, too.
And like we just said, notebooks are a good place to write your notes.
Now let's look at our second key word.
marker.
marker.
A marker is like a pen but it is much... thicker.
You usually use markers for coloring pictures or drawing.
Mmhm. That's right.
I like to use markers to draw pictures.
But I do not like to write with markers.
They are just too thick for writing words.
That is very true.
Markers are good for drawing pictures but not for writing a lot down.
And Mark says that he wants these things for his desk at home.
And then Ken has an idea.
He tells Mark he can buy something else.
But what is it?
Mark can buy another pen at the stationery store, too.
That's true.
Stationery stores do have a lot of pens.
And I think that Ken just wants Mark's nice new pen.
I guess that's a good idea.
Well, friends, we are out of time, so we should review today's key words now.
Please say them with us.
write down.
write down.
Write down your name and phone number.
stationery.
stationery.
I buy paper at the stationery store.
card.
card.
Susan has a birthday card for her sister.
notebook.
notebook.
Please bring your notebook to class.
marker.
marker.
Ben is writing with a marker.
Good job, friends.
We hope that you remembered all of those key words.
Make sure and practice them again on your own.
Let's take a short break rightnow.
