Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
This is the English show where we try to make learning English fun.
My name is Nathan.
We hope that you have a great time today.
Our topic today is still PEOPLE, but we have a new lesson.
It is called Why Laughter Is Good for You.
Why Laughter Is Good for You.
Katie, what things make you laugh?
Well, Nathan, that is a great question - one that I'm excited to answer.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie.
And do you know what makes me laugh?
Usually funny movies or funny books.
I like to watch them and read them and laugh a lot when I do.
So what makes you laugh, friends?
It's good to laugh.
And we're going to learn more about this in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk.
Do you like to laugh?
I do.
Well, today I have a very funny guest.
Please.
Let's welcome a very funny person, Mr. Humor!
Thank you, Rob!
I'm glad I can make people laugh!
Laughter is important.
Tell us why.
Laughter can help lower stress levels.
That's one reason you feel good after you laugh!
I know I always do!
Yes. And with less stress, your body can fight illnesses.
So laughter can keep you healthy!
I'm glad to hear that laughter is so good for your health.
I love to laugh.
I'm sure you do, too, friends.
Katie, did you hear the name of Rob's guest?
Yes. His name is Mr. Humor.
That's a good name for him.
Humor means things that are funny.
People like different kinds of humor.
They think different things are funny.
Yes.
I may laugh at a joke.
But Katie may not think it's funny.
Well, Katie, what is the first reason that laughter is good for you?
Well, it helps lower stress levels.
So if you feel bad because you are busy or nervous, you will feel better after
you laugh.
And if your stress level is lower, your body can fight illnesses.
Now there is our first key word for today.
fight.
fight.
If you fight something, you're trying very hard to stop it.
When we use this word, we often mean that you are trying to hurt someone.
That kind of fighting is bad.
But "fight" is used a little differently here.
Yes, it is different.
An illness is something that makes you sick.
So if you are fighting an illness, you are trying to get better.
That kind of fighting is good.
Sometimes you might need to fight sleep.
You want to try to stay awake.
All right, friends.
There's a lot more to learn in Conversation B.
Let's go there now.
(Music).
Rob, after you laugh a lot, do you ever feel tired or sore?
Yes! Sometimes I feel as if I just ran a mile!
That's good!
Laughter is good exercise.
It helps your blood move through your body more easily.
It relaxes your muscles, too.
So laughter helps your heart?
Yes, it does!
Laughter really is the best medicine!
Then I'll try to laugh more!
Hahahaha...
Mr. Humor uses today's "Use It!" sentence in Conversation B.
He says, "After you laugh a lot, do you ever feel tired or sore?" After (blank),
do you ever feel (blank)?
After eating cheap food, do you ever feel sick?
Or, after running, do you ever feel excited?
After practicing English, do you ever feel tired?
It can be hard, but we are here to help you.
Now in the conversation, Rob says that after he laughs, he feels like he ran a
mile.
Let's talk about that key word.
mile.
mile.
We use miles to say how far something is.
Like this:
You have to walk two miles to get to the park.
In Asia, people use kilometers instead of miles.
One mile is about 1.6 kilometers.
But if you go to the United States, you need to know about miles.
When you're driving a car, signs will tell you how many miles you still need to
travel.
So, Rob feels like he ran pretty far when he laughs a lot.
So Mr. Humor says laughter is good exercise.
But what is that, Katie?
Well, it's a key word.
exercise.
exercise.
Exercise is when you do things with your body to stay healthy.
There are many different kinds of exercise, right, Nathan?
Oh, sure.
You can swim for exercise.
You can run for exercise.
You can also play sports for exercise.
Everyone should find time for some exercise.
You are right, Nathan.
Exercise is very important.
But remember, if you laugh a lot, you're also getting some exercise.
Now, friends, what do you do for exercise?
Mr. Humor says that laughing helps move blood through your body more easily,
too.
And I think there are some key words in that sentence.
Yes, there are.
Let's look at the first one.
blood.
blood.
Blood is red, and it moves like water in your body.
Do you know why it is important for blood to move, Nathan?
Oh, well, blood takes things that your body needs like oxygen (O2) to all the
parts of your body.
If your blood stops moving, your body would not work.
But what does it mean if something moves more easily?
Well, that's another key word to look at.
easily.
easily.
If something is done easily, it is not hard to do.
Yes, it is "easy." You might know that word, which is an adjective.
"Easily" is an adverb.
If blood moves easily, it has no problems going from one body part to another.
You may do some things easily, too.
You may learn English well.
You may play sports easily.
Those are other things you can do easily.
And we hope that you are learning today's key words easily, too.
We don't want you to have any problems remembering and using them.
And now it's time for this week's Read It.
(Music).
Have you ever heard someone say, "Laughter is the best medicine"?
Laughing really is good for your body.
Laughter can lower your stress level.
That makes you feel better!
And when you have less stress, you can fight illnesses.
Laughter is also good exercise!
After you laugh a lot, you may feel as if you just ran a mile!
When you laugh, your blood moves through your body more easily.
That's good for your heart.
Laughter relaxes your muscles, too.
Read It asks a good question today:
Have you ever heard someone say, "Laughter is the best medicine"?
If something is the best medicine, it makes everything better.
And you know that medicine is something that you eat that will make you feel
better.
So the best kind of medicine will make everything feel better.
And laughter really can do that.
Katie, don't you feel happy when you laugh?
But it also makes your body feel good, too.
Now let's look at another sentence in Read It.
You may feel as if you just ran a mile.
You did not run a mile, but the feeling is the same as running a mile.
It may be more common to say you may feel "like" you just ran a mile.
But try to use "as if." Like when I see an old friend, I feel as if I have gone
home.
Or, he looked so happy as if he had just fallen in love.
All right, friends, let's practice our key words right now.
Here's the first key word.
fight.
fight.
Rest helps your body fight your cold.
exercise.
exercise.
Playing a sport is good exercise.
mile.
mile.
The school is two miles from here.
blood.
blood.
Blood is always moving in your body.
easily.
easily.
The big man moved the table easily.
And we hope that you will remember your key words easily as well.
Right now, why don't we take a littlebreak.
